Re: Joe Webb (Moving Forward)
You cats crack me up...one really bad game and Webb has "NO" qb, Vikings, NFL value at all! How many horrible games has Ponder had in 1.5 seasons, and now he has earned the starting job. I've seen enough of him not hitting receivers at a quick turn and "rarely" throwing downfield. Sure Webb practices all year like everyone else, but he probably doesn't get the intricate care/coaching that a starter does. If the coaches worked more with his accuracy, I'd bet he'd do alright, better then Ponder and many others in the NFL. He moves like a basketball player but with girth. He could be a winner, maybe a bust, but one bad game? One bad game and those who once touted his qb skills see him as worthless...so many laughs. Ponder won't throw downfield. It must be his confidence which has to be instilled from within. Hey, at least he can run fast once he "chooses" to not throw to his receivers who supposedly can't run, can't catch, can't get separation! Laughs...

Re: Joe Webb (Moving Forward)
Down here in Cowboys land we don't get a lot of Vikings visibility, especially during bad seasons. I seem to remember a few moments in the previous two seasons when first Favre, then Ponder went down that Webb stepped in and did alright while fronting a couple of bad Vikings teams. Was there not some talk of his "athletic" ability and his deserved playtime, or am I remembering completely wrong? I'm sure I will be informed, but as to the original post, Joe Webb has NFL ability; if he was centralized as qb, I'd bet he'd perform better then Ponder. Ponder has shown enough that he is a backup. Regardless, opining in a football forum has no effect on the field. We are but fans watching from screens or seats who know more then coaches. Webb's one awful game has killed his chances as a starter in the eyes of almost everyone, including those with whistles. Coaches, at times, have a way of ruining a player's career through perception. Webb isn't the only quarterback who suffers. Oh wait, he is no NFL qb, I forgot.

No, you're not remembering wrong. There was talk of his athletic ability and a lot of enthusiasm amongst a segment of the fan base that got excited about his potential because he stepped into a few games and performed above expectations (primarily making plays on the run). However, his skills as a QB were always in doubt and there's a big difference between athletic ability and quarterbacking skill.indianation65 wrote:Down here in Cowboys land we don't get a lot of Vikings visibility, especially during bad seasons. Webb has NFL ability but it's basically third string ability, second string at best. He lacks the skill set to start for an extended period at any position and he's shown precious little sign of developing that skill set. As a QB, if the defense can keep him in the pocket and prevent him from doing too much damage with his legs, they've basically won.I'm sure I will be informed, but as to the original post, Joe Webb has NFL ability; if he was centralized as qb, I'd bet he'd perform better then Ponder.

Oh, he's definitely had his positive moments and has provided us with some thrills. I like Webb. I just don't think he has the skills of a starting QB. That doesn't mean he can't make some great, exciting plays!

Agreed, I think fans give him far too much flack. It's all too easy to forget the bad moments during tough stretches. He achieved some success but I would have to agree that it's pretty apparant that he's not capable of picking up the slack at QB when Ponder goes down.
Hopefully he can remain on the roster, being utilised in some role.

Re: Joe Webb (Moving Forward)
Thanks for posting this; there's no better reminder of his very real talent. It explains why the Vikings have attempted to develop him with such patience. If he could throw accurately and consistently he'd be very similar to Kapernick. Pretty big gap between the two regarding passing ability, I know, but his ability to take it to the house at any moment and makes something out of nothing is huge.
One thing that caught my eye is at around the 1:35 mark: Webb has a long run and Percy comes FLYING across the field to make a block. He ultimately doesn't need to so he pulls up at the last second, but it shows a commitment to Joe that I doubt Christian has from Percy. I don't want to read too much into it, but it definitely grabbed my attention.
Re: Joe Webb (Moving Forward)
Webb gets to run the read-option against the Packers and moves the ball well. They try to turn him into a pocket passer the rest of the game with disastrous results. The Niners allow Kaepernick to run the read option all game against the Packers and win.
I'm not saying Webb = Kaepernick, I think Kaep has a much larger skillset he brings to the table. However, Webb was never given a chance to succeed in that game. They took away the one chance they had to try and fit him into a mold he will never conform to. I think we need to move on from Webb, at the least he's not a west coast QB and at most he's not a QB at all.

Why would you doubt that Harvin would have the same commitment to make a block for Ponder that he showed on the play you described?Texas Vike wrote:One thing that caught my eye is at around the 1:35 mark: Webb has a long run and Percy comes FLYING across the field to make a block. I agree with you Jim. What indication from Harvin's relationship with Ponder would suggest that Harvin would not run down field and block for him. If Harvin would have stayed healthy he probably would have led the league in receptions for the year with Ponder throwing to him.Mothman wrote: Why would you doubt that Harvin would have the same commitment to make a block for Ponder that he showed on the play you described?
