Congratulations from a Saints fan

Post by Saintsfan »

I wanted to post this a couple of days ago, but it took a minute for me to get approved being a Saints fan. First off I would like to say not sure how Vikings fans feel about Saints fans, but not all Saints fans hate the Vikings & their fans. In fact I'm getting long in the tooth now, but as a young Saints fan, I realized early in life that if I ever had a chance of caring about the NFL after December, I better get a 2nd team to pull for right quick.

And being an LSU fan I always liked the Vikings uniforms. Plus I loved the way the Purple People Eaters played & took the Vikings as my alternate team at a young age. I can still remember the names of so many great Viking players like Ron Yary, Roy Winston, Alan Page, John Gilliam who we gave you guy. I loved watching the toughness of old Joe Kapp, the scrambling & play making of Fran Tarkenton, Chuck Foreman the great Paul Krauss, (if I misspell a name it's because I'm going by memory & not using spell check). Jim Marshall, Jeff Siemon, Ed Marinaro, Sammy White, Gene Washington, and so on Etc. I never could figure out why so many media people hated Tarkenton & refused to this day to acknowledge his greatness, but he was an incredible player & one of the all time great QBs.

I always believed the Vikings had some of the greatest teams ever to not win a Superbowl. And I always felt the pain for those great Vikings teams that never won it save the one Superbowl we won in 2009. I know there is probably a lot of anger by Viking fan over that game. But come on man. That was the two best teams in the league & the Vikings just didn't take care of the football in that game. The same could be said of this last game between us this year as well. We didn't take care of the football when it counted & we paid the price.

Having said all of that, I want to congratulate the Vikings on their great win this past Sunday in the Superdome. I know everyone says preseason means nothing. But after seeing the depth of talent the Vikings & knowing the depth of talent the Saints had in their 1st preseason game this year, I was telling people that this was probably a preview of the NFC championship game. Of course the season happened & both teams had distinct challenges which caused both teams not to achieve the ultimate regular season goal each one had set. This led to both teams having to play each other on a wild card weekend which, IMO, was somewhat an unfair shake by the football gods to both teams.

Well, your guys came in rested with a great game plan & just pretty much kicked our butts where it counts, at the LOS. While I was proud of the efforts of certain players on my team, the fact is Minnesota just outplayed us & our all world QB did something very uncharacteristic of himself. He allowed his pride to take over his will to win & made some crucial mistakes your guy didn't make. And when all the money was on the table, our offense panicked & cost us a game we still had a chance to win. But your guys didn't panic. They played great football when it counted most. And if they will continue to pull together & play up to their capabilities this team certainly has the talent & coaching to shock the football world & win it all.

As a Saints fan, you can't blame me if I feel a little like the league has an agenda that doesn't include either of our teams in it. I have said since October the League wants an Aaron Rodgers/Patrick Mahomes State Farm Superbowl. Part of that equation was walking Aaron Rodgers by the hand to a bi week he didn't deserve. I'm sorry, but I can't stand that guy & he is the most over rated player I can recall in my life time. I believe you guys will go to San Fransisco & beat those guys. I think your team matches up well with them & if they play the way they did against us, you will only be one game away from the big one. Please, please, please promise me that you fans won't let your team lay another egg against the Green Bay Pukers. Please promise me that you will finish this deal & bring home your first Superbowl title. You have a great team & a terrific coach & a lot to be proud of. We say Whodat as a sign of love & respect for our team when we sign off on our rants in Louisiana. So its only fitting that I say to you guys go Vikings & kick some ####, Shock the football world & WHODAT!

Buddy that really cool of you to come here with a post like that. Very classy and cool of you.
I will admit to you that yes I still Harbor alot of bitterness doe to the 09 game with all that went down. But that has nothing to do with you.
Also you could have came here and tried to bring the beat to to death view that there was an OPI by Rudy but you didn't. That's really classy of you.
I will guarentee you that your views on Erin Rodgers will resonate LOUDLY here, and you will become an adopted fan here lol.
I hope we can bring home that Lombardi for us fans that have been with this team for so long, in my case over 50 years. And also for you as a cool fan of another team.
So thanks man. I hope we do it for you to enjoy also!

I don't have anything against the Saints as a team, Brees seems like a good guy as do most of the other players. I was at the game when Adrian Peterson came back as a Saint and their fans were fine. I just can't stand Sean Payton and Gregg Williams (who I know is no longer there but that's where it stems from).

I don't believe the Saints were the only team to have bounties but Payton is just classless. Even the game a couple years ago with him mocking the Skol chant and making the choking sign.

I agree about Payton. I was at the MPLS miracle game and had great interactions with Saints fans before, during and after. I've also always absolutely loved the city and people of NO. We appreciate the post.

I agree 100% . I think Brees is a great human being. I have a friend at work who's wife was at Purdue and was in a big group of friends that included Brees and other players. He and his wife have had visits with Brees and his wife after games in Detroit and Indy when the players there as they are close to us. He said Brees acted with his wife like it was just yesterday they were together and said he treated him like a long lost friend.
I just cannot stand Peyton and feel Gregg Williams should have had a lifetime ban from ever coaching in the league ever again.
Maybe Peyton is a good guy out if the spotlight, I dont know. But everything I see he is an arrogant total jerk, and as long as he is coaching that team I just will never be able to like them.
I would love to go to N.O..someday for the culture. Hey, I LOVE Swamp People. My goal is to.meet Troy Laundry at a hunting expo someday. I absolutely love the culture I've seen from that whole area.
Just get Peyton outta there lol.
But that was so cool of our new visitor to come on here and show the PERFECT example of class.

The guys on here will tell you ... I take no prisoners when it comes to opposing fans invading our board. I'm pretty brutal.

BUT ... a large part of that is because none of them, and I do mean ZERO, have ever come here and made such a classy post as you just made.

I think you analyzed this past Sunday's game fairly. We came in rested, and to be honest, we came in with a chip on our shoulder. The media and most fans gave us no chance. Heck, many people on this board predicted a Saints blowout. I think the players, although they'll never admit it, were tired of being disrespected in the media. They went out there with something to prove.

You're right ... Drew Brees played uncharacteristically poor. Two years ago, he started out the game that way, then turned it on in the second half. We were, of course, very fortunate to walk away with the Minneapolis Miracle. We all expected Brees to turn it on in the second half this past Sunday, but save for one drive in the fourth quarter, he never really did. Taysom Hill was mostly responsible for this game getting to overtime. It was weird to see Drew Brees fail.

Like some of the guys have said, we have a lot of respect for Drew Brees. He's a class act, a good teammate, and a great man in the community. Plus, he just plays the game the right way and carries himself like a pro. But I won't apologize for loathing your coach, who has done some pretty despicable things. Say what you want about Bountygate, but it was on Payton's watch, and it was wrong. If we'd have beaten you guys, Favre would have missed the Super Bowl, which would have been unbelievable. I'll also say, part of the reason we had some of our turnovers was because Favre could barely walk. Another memory that sticks in my mind was his mock SKOL chant on the sidelines of our stadium two years ago after you guys had taken the lead with less than a minute to go. Utterly classless, and fitting that he got it handed back to him.

Anyway, enough vitriol, and enough energy spent on Sean Payton.

Thank you for your post. We rarely see that from opposing fans, so it's refreshing to read. And you have no reason to apologize for your summation of the old Vikings. You did better than most on this board would have done in naming them!

Thanks again, and best of luck in the future.

I'll tell you guys right now, I love Sean Payton & don't mind you dogging him at all. And while I don't recall Payton doing whatever gesture in the game that you guys recall,I wouldn't put it past him either. That's like Diggs doing Choppa Style in front of Payton the other day. At first I was P.O'd, but then I thought about it & had to laugh a little. Diggs is the kind of guy you hate if he isn't on your team. But you have to like him if he is. You're hatred for Payton tells me he must be doing a pretty good job.

But I feel about Drew Brees in a similar way as I do Fran Tarkenton. Tarkenton was an incredibly great player who never got the respect from the national media he deserved. And I fear & have experienced through time that Drew will never get his rightful place in NFL history just like Fran has never gotten his as evidenced by the top 100 players of the first 100 years. How they could pick Staubach over Tarkenton was BS in my book. Tarkenton rewrote the record books for his day & the only reason I can figure he never got his due was because of his size like Drew. And that is a disgrace to me.

But you guys have all the tools in the tool box. And hopefully you will keep the proverbial chip on your shoulders all the way through. I remember 1987 when you guys came to the dome the first year we made the playoffs & they coined the term "backed in to the playoffs" just for y'all that year. Yeah, y'all might have backed into the playoffs, but Wade Wilson, & Anthony Carter, A little running back I can't recall & Millard & Doleman wore us out & then I think you went out & whipped the 49ers right after that. Does this sound familiar? And you guys were so close then. We didn't have internet & message board back then, but I was pulling for you guys after y'all beat us because of course I probably hated Montana worse than Rodgers ( the difference being Montana was as great as they made him out to be), & man were y'all close. If you would have pulled it off against the Redskins, you would have had that trophy. Y'all need this. you deserve it. And you're guys need to keep their focus & belief & that chip, because you have the team to do this.

Just some video evidence for you to show that the whole Diggs' thing was way overblown by the Twitterverse (as usual). People see an image, make huge assumptions about what was going on, and attack.

I don't know that the same can be said for Payton mocking the crowd with the SKOL chant. He seems to have a history of doing things like that. That said, I think he's an excellent coach if he were the coach of the Vikings I would certainly look the other way. Those things look childish, but the truth is we don't know the story either. It could be that some idiot fan was taunting him the whole game, and he wanted a little revenge. Hard to judge him on that. If it weren't for the more egregious stuff, I think everyone would look the other way here too.

Bounty Gate will forever be a mar on his record though. That's not something most Viking fans will ever overlook. I think it was cheap and dirty. They were clearly trying to injure Favre (and succeeded), and that's horrible. And don't get me started on the refs. But, you're absolutely correct, the Vikings had their chances despite all of that. 5 turnovers killed them more than anything, and if we hold on to 1 or 2 of them, none of that other stuff would have mattered.

I have always really liked and respected Brees. Not just for his play on the field. He seems to be a really great guy in life also. I would love to have him as our QB. The Saints are lucky to have him. Back when he was essentially dismissed by the Chargers, I really wanted the Vikings to take a look at him. Of course, I had no idea that he would turn in to this guy!

He has looked fairly pedestrian vs us lately, and his arm probably isn't what it used to be, but he's still a fantastic QB. As bitter as I was about 2009, I was still sorta happy for Brees. (It helps that he and Thomas has carried me to a few fantasy football championships in my dynasty leagues in the past several years. )

I have been preaching this all year. The Vikings absolutely have the tools. Statistically, we are up there with all the top teams. We've had a hard time getting them all working at the same time though in big games. We didn't back into the playoffs this year, but I'll admit it had that feel after we dropped an important game to GB, and looked awful in the process. If we can play like we did last Sunday, we can certainly get to the SB, but it's a tall task that's for sure. In most of our losses, we were highly competitive, so I know we'll put up a fight at least.

I'm glad there are at least a few respectable and kind Saints fans left. The only ones I have personally encountered are trash-talking, self-centered buffoons. I have great respect for Drew Brees and Michael Thomas, great players that let their play do the talking. On the other hand, Sean Payton and his Bountygate cheap shots and mocking of the SKOL chant will make me forever root against the Saints for as long as he coaches there.
