Vikings-Peterson agree to restructure

Post by dead_poet »

Adrian Peterson - RB - Vikings

The Vikings and Adrian Peterson have agreed to restructure the final three years of his contract.

Early in the offseason, Peterson made it seem like he was upset with the Vikings for turning their back on him during the child abuse scandal. In reality, he wanted more guaranteed money over the next two years of his contract. Although details aren't out yet, this restructure almost certainly accomplishes that. His base salary numbers over the next three years will come down, but his guarantees will go up. Peterson, who turned 30 in March, will be with the Vikings for at least two more years.

Although full details are not yet available, the new contract will decrease his base salaries while increasing the guaranteed money, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports, via a source involved.

Peterson's comment about "additional security" acknowledges as much.

Wonder how much the Vikes save per year. Is that they way it works, so theres more cap room?

I think this was a good move regardless. Give Mckinnon quite a few reps, and AD should still be in good shape in his 3rd year.

@CharlesRobinson Restructure began when Adrian Peterson showed up for OTAs. #Vikings wanted to take additional step to show they were committed beyond 2015.
@CharlesRobinson Adrian Peterson didn't have leverage to get this restructure. But that says a lot about both #Vikings and his agent getting a win for both.
@MikeGarafolo For all intents and purposes, Adrian Peterson had '15 money ($13m) guaranteed. Now has guarantees into '16, with '17 TBD.
@ChrisWesseling Jim Brown, Barry Sanders only 2 RBs in @NFL history with more rushing yards per game than Adrian Peterson’s 98.0
@GoesslingESPN NFLPA website has an additional $2 million on Peterson's 2017 base salary. Doubt that's guaranteed.
@1500ESPN_Reusse All folks ripping Ben Dogra ... Adrian's agent was genius in this deal. Changed discussion from AP taking cut to more guaranteed millions.
@MNBrianHall I'm sure Peterson feels differently, but this could be the last "big" contract he sees in the NFL now that he'll see end of deal at 33.
@mattvensel Guaranteed money beyond 2015 was what Peterson and Dogra wanted all along.
@CharlesRobinson #Vikings add two years of guaranteed money to what was a totally team-slanted contract of a 30-year old running back. Pretty amazing.
@CharlesRobinson It's worth noting that Adrian Peterson is arguably starting 2015 for #Vikings in the best shape of his life. He sees 2015 as a monster year.
@DWolfsonKSTP No 2017 guarantees for AP. Just essentially some in 2016. But not like you'd pay him millions in 2016 & then cut. So basically all. #vikings

I really hope that this was the deal I, Jim, and others were discussing about earlier this offseason.

It never made sense to me why Minnesota would want to keep Adrian's cap number so high. I am going to go out on a limb and say the team saved at least 4 million in cap space though the workings of an upfront bonus. Hopefully, we can see the details of the deal soon enough.

Good. Hopefully the numbers are right and we can finally enter a season with everything pointed in the right direction.

Quotes:

Spielman: "This agreement is a win for both Adrian and the Vikings and is a positive step toward Adrian finishing his career as a Minnesota Viking. As we have consistently said, Adrian is a valuable part of the Vikings organization and we look forward to his return to the field."

Peterson: "I appreciate the Vikings for working together on this restructured contract, which provides additional security for me but also allows opportunities for me to further prove my value to the team and within the NFL. It was important for me to continue my career in Minnesota, and I cannot wait to get on the field in front of Vikings fans again."

Interesting tidbit here regarding the Dogra/Brzezinski "fight." I hadn't heard this until now.
But as lost as Peterson was at times – and as strained as it seemed between Dogra and the Vikings – it was never as bad as some of what was reported. Particularly one of the more eyebrow raising incidents: when Dogra allegedly nearly came to fisticuffs with Vikings president of football operations Rob Brzezinski at the NFL scouting combine in February. The "confrontation" was reported nationally and cited as a sign that things had completely broken down between the franchise and player. The only problem? It didn't happen the way it was reported.

Two sources who witnessed the "confrontation" said Dogra and Brzezinski were laughing and good-naturedly "trash talking" each other in the widely reported moment, but neither was threatening the other. At one point, the sources said, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers executive Mark Dominik playfully pretended to get in between Brzezinski and Dogra, but the scene was not remotely acrimonious. In turn, the day after the "incident," Yahoo Sports witnessed both Dogra and Brzezinski sitting at a bar together and talking the next day.

@MarkdominikESPN Adrian Peterson now has $20M in guarantees, $13M in '15, $7M in '16. He also has a $5M roster bonus March '16. It's a great contract for AP

@JasonLaCanfora AP reworked deal effectively guarantees his $13M for '15 now rather than Week 1 as a vest vet. Vikes then rent w/$7M inj guar for 2016. Peterson gets $11M base salary and $2M roster bonus for '15 guaranteed now (roster bonus paid this week
‏@JasonLaCanfora In 2016 AP has a $7.75M base w/ $7M guar for injury now. Becomes fully guar 3rd day of '16 league year, when a $5M roster bonus also due. So Vikings will essentially be forced to make another buy-in on AP in March rather than be able to string it til start of season as before..
‏@JasonLaCanfora In 2017, AP has a base of $11.75M with a $6M roster bonus due 3rd day of that league year. Also has $250K workout bonus in 16 and 17. So the gross money in remainder of AP's deal essentially the same (was set to have bases of $13M, $15M, $18M) but structure changes
@TomPelissero Basically, Adrian Peterson's new deal is 2 years, $26M. If #Vikings want to keep him, another deal coming in 2017. $18M just a placeholder.

That's a letdown. Much prefer the version where our capologist was ready to throw down on Doga. Made our front office look like it had some big cajones.

I'd say the Vikings won this restructuring. Peterson gets a larger roster bonus if he rushes for 1750 yds AND the team wins a playoff game (both have to happen). His roster bonus is reduced if he rushes for less than 1550 yds OR the team fails to win a playoff game (either one happens). It's very rare to see a DE-escaltor clause in a restructuring. Congrats to Rob-ski for selling this play-for-pay scheme that works both ways.

What does the Radisson Hotels think about this?

I don't know if that was sarcasm, Raptorman, but this somewhat answers Pseudo Everything's question:

They are happy, I am happy, everyone is happy (maybe except the packers :D).
Now can we get some figgin' football soon..

I don't think I have been this positive and exited about a vikings season since Farve was here.
*And then mostly because it was awesome to see Farve smack AR around like 'who's your daddy?'*
