Breaking Point ..
I have giving this a lot of thought since the trip to the Browns game.
I have been a huge Vikings since about 1992 ...
I can support the team losing if they are least trying but putting out a player without making him
compete or earn the job, just because you don't want to admit to screwed up drafting him.
Cassel has proven that he is clearly the best option IMO to win games and
if they want to determine the future they need to start Freeman as much as possible
to see if we need to start over for the QB role in the off season( which we probably do).
If the Vikings don't at least deal with this right away in the off season and hopefully
fire the whole coaching staff as well. I don't think i can support them as a fan if this
continues past this season.

Jackal, I am confident that the Vikes will try to fix the QB problem in the off-season. They more or less said as much when they brought in Freeman. However, jackal wrote:I have giving this a lot of thought since the trip to the Browns game.

whether they can find a worthy starter at that position remains an unknown. I certainly hope that they don't pick guy who turns out to be a bust (as many first round picks do) and then spend three or four more years treating him as the franchise QB. I still remember the Raiders' patience in working with JaMarcus Russell -- the guy clearly was awful, and yet they kept throwing him out there simply because they had invested a mint in him. The Vikes can't afford another three or four years after this one of horrid QB play.
Re: Breaking Point ..
It will shock me if (1) barring injury, Ponder starts another game in Minnesota and (2) the Vikings do not fire their head coach in the off- season.

Re: Breaking Point ..
To be fair, not many of us believed he'd start another game in Minnesota after the "rib injury" and Cassel playing well. At this point it wouldn't surprise me if Ponder gets another start and is also brought back to compete for the starting job next year. Our franchise is that clueless. Not that they have many options as Cassel is clearly capable of playing just as bad as Ponder, but Ponder SHOULD NEVER see the field in an NFL game again. I would hope they'd sign some scrub off the street if the only other option is Ponder. Losing is one thing, but this is getting down right embarrassing to keep naming Ponder the starter and saying he gives us the best chance to win. I mean we're beyond incompetence now.CalVike wrote:It will shock me if (1) barring injury, Ponder starts another game in Minnesota

Re: Breaking Point ..
Ponder was bad today, but the team was still very much in the game up until that disastrous 4th quarter, and Ponder hadn't done horribly up to that point. You can look at it as a good sign that they actually yanked him from the game. Yes it may have come after his second pick, but I've seen them leave him in there many times in that situation.
Re: Breaking Point ..
Ponder had 3 NFL caliber passes today, the curl to Patterson, the roll out to Carlson, and the deep TD to Wright, otherwise he was gawd awful the entire game. 3 passes a game ain't gonna cut it when you look as bad as Ponder does in the other 19 passes.
I mean our offense is so bad and predictable all 3 INT's were within 5 yards of the LOS. How many times a game can you throw the ball short? Our offensive mentality is the same as our defensive mentality, play it safe and wait for the other team to make a mistake. Seriously that's our entire game plan on both sides of the ball. Well if we throw short enough times someone might break 11 tackles and score.
We were 2-7 and these idiots are still playing like they have something to play for. Remember how Cleveland played us? Why aren't we playing like that at this point? Why aren't we trying new things now that we have nothing to lose? No gambles, no creativity, and no fakes. Still play it safe vanilla.

I would like to see us at least attempt a fake punt/FG at some point before this year is over. Why not?Reignman wrote:Ponder had 3 NFL caliber passes today, the curl to Patterson, the roll out to Carlson, and the deep TD to Wright, otherwise he was gawd awful the entire game. 3 passes a game ain't gonna cut it when you look as bad as Ponder does in the other 19 passes.

Re: Breaking Point ..
Personally I think we saw today why dumping a 25 year old difference maker like Percy Harvin is so dangerous. They have no one on offense other than AD that can pressure a defense, which is too bad.

Re: Breaking Point ..
That was my thinking. Why not? I half expected them to try something new today. I mean at least they tried the hurry up against Dallas. Today we had nothing to play for in a no chance to win game. Why not try some things to throw Seattle off balance? Onside kick, fake kick, statue of liberty, half back pass, fumblerooskie? Nope, business as usual with the same failed philosophy. This coaching staff is so neurotic about playing it safe even in a lost season.tmscr wrote:I would like to see us at least attempt a fake punt/FG at some point before this year is over. Why not?

Re: Breaking Point ..
I agree to an extent. I like what we have with Patterson though and he hasn't shown any personality issues so far. The problem remains that we need to have someone to get the ball to guys like harvin/pattersonCalVike wrote:Personally I think we saw today why dumping a 25 year old difference maker like Percy Harvin is so dangerous. Re: Breaking Point ..
Actually we have a good Corp of receivers, just no Quarterback to throw it and no OK.
Re: Breaking Point ..
I don't blame Ponder or even Frazier anymore. They are what they are, which is overtly inadequate at their respective jobs. If someone hired me as a rocket scientist I would be pretty bad at it but if they kept paying me I'd keep going back every day trying to make it work as best I can. This is the way I feel about Ponder and the coaching staff, they're in way over their heads but they continue to keep their jobs so what else is there to do but keep going out there. At this point, it's time for Wilf or Spielman to step in, be the boss, and start letting people go. It's unfair to the team and the fanbase to continually put out the same tired dysfunctional gameplan week after week expecting some sort of change. It doesn't matter if Cassel/Freeman and Stewart/Priefer are not the ideal options, you need to start holding people accountable and showing the rest of the organization that lack of performance will not be tolerated. It's time. It has been for weeks but now it should be crystal clear.
Unfortunately what we'll likely see is Frazier remaining here until the end of the season and a continued vacillation in who should be quarterback. I said it many times before but failure of this magnitude starts with upper management. I'm very surprised that as a successful businessman Wilf cannot see this. The house cleaning will come at the end of the season, no doubt, but I really don't see why it has to wait that long, there's very little to lose at this point by firing and benching people.

For all the times that we can/have made fun of Lions fans, not once could you question their loyalty. Step away from the ledge dude...it's just one ugly season - literally EVERY team in the history of the NFL has gone through stretches like this. Just remember, sports work in cycles.jackal wrote:I have giving this a lot of thought since the trip to the Browns game.

Re: Breaking Point ..
It's not the same kind of situation when Childress got fired. When Frazier took over for Childress and then got named HC the next season he had already been regarded around the league as a HC candidate for several years. If he hadn't gotten the job here he probably would have somewhere else. You can't say that about anyone on the current coaching staff, which is a good thing. Also, Childress clearly overstepped his bounds and butt heads with others in the organization. Despite another disastrous year, I'm sure Frazier is still well liked by the team brass and players. He's a likeable guy and because of this they won't fire him during the season.80 PurplePride 84 wrote:it's not like Musgrave, Priefer, Singletary or whoever would make any difference. They'd all be worse probably. And if any of them did anything it might trick Zygi into hiring them full time like he did Frazier
Can him right after the season, though, and everyone else. Time to get some new blood in there with a fresh approach. Tear it all up, burn it, and stomp on the ashes. They need a clean start, not a continuation of the same line. If that means Spielman needs to go too, then so be it. The ultimate nightmare would be him hiring another staff who approach the game in the same uncreative and outdated way.

Re: Breaking Point ..
Firing someone now is a waste of time. The season is over and the team is in shambles. Let Frazier and Ponder finish out the season. After that final game, Frazier and company needs to be fire that next day.
