Vikings vs Dolphins for Wallace?

Post by headless_norseman »

Seeing some reports crop up that the Vikes and Fins might be bidding for Wallace. This might be worth it as it would free us up to key in stronger on other positions.

Hopefully the dolphins win the bidding war. Not a fan of Wallace. We've had enough receivers over the years droping balls. I'd rather trade our 1st round pick to the Giants for Cruz.

Spielman has made it clear that he intends to build through the draft and supplement through the free agency.

Thankfully, that probably means there will be no trading away the first round pick.

I think our best bet might just be a similar strategy to last year's, when we picked up two WRs in the 4th rd, or possibly one in the 1st/2nd and another in the 4th. They need to simply invest smartly in the position. FA is not the way to go at WR.

I agree.

He seems like a one trick pony, pure blazer. Admittedly he is capable of producing moments of magic (I attended the MNF Chiefs @ Steelers game last season and was situated in the South Endzone to witness that incredible diving catch) but these are two few and far between. Give me a reliable, all around receiver please.

Though injury prone and the slight issue of being tainted by the Cheeseknobs, I still think I'd prefer Greg Jennings, rate him higher to this day.

That would be great to sign him. I think he would be an awesome edition to our currently broken WR core. We are also looking for young players so I think he would fit the bill perfectly

Only if Percy stays. Otherwise, it's a dumb move. Wallace only supplements an offense by giving a team speed and game-breaking ability, but if he's coming to replace Harvin...It'll be a bust.

wallace is good, but i think Welker would help us more with our offense and QB ..

Ponder isn't a deep ball thrower from what i have seen so far

If we by chance bought Wallace, then Harvin is on the way out, in all likelihood. The we probably take 2 more WR's in this years draft, either way.

I'm starting to get apprehensive about Wallace. Maybe I'm jaded but we could be seeing Berrian 2.0. A guy with a limited skill tree and questionable work ethic that will not come near to living up to his contract. I expect the Vikings to inquire, of course, but be outbid by a wide margin. His 2012 across-the-board statistical decline, mental lapses and drops only muddies the waters.

I agree with you Poet. In addition I’ll add that I still hold the view that the massive FA WR signing will be PH, thus if they sign Wallace it would indicate an intention to let PH walk. IMO, that would be a very bad trade.

Just remember, PH can't "walk". He's under contract.

I'm on the fence about Wallace. His big play ability would certainly be welcome but I suspect he'd cost more than he'd be worth and as dead_poet pointed out, there are some red flags there that should give the Vikings pause. In the end, I doubt they'll sign him. Someone will pay him more than they're willing to pay.

IF the Vikings did sign Wallace and get rid of Harvin, it's conceivable they could end up coming out ahead in the end. If they got something good in return for PH and drafted a good WR or two in April, it might work out well, especially if Wallace came through for them. For example, a starting WR trio of Wallace at flanker, Wright in the slot and Keenan Allen at split end might be a big improvement over 2012's trio of Simpson, Harvin and Jenkins.

I'm just tossing out a hypothetical situation, As I said, I doubt the Vikes will sign Wallace and I won't be surprised if they reach an agreement to extend Harvin's contract.

Here's a link to an interesting comparison between Jennings and Wallace. Prisco prefers Wallace as the top free agent WR:

I'm on the fence about Wallace too. However, I think Prisco does bring up some decent points about why a guy like Wallace would be more useful than Jennings. I look at Wallace as being what the Vikings had hoped Jerome Simpson would be. That said, would that also include the disappointments? That's what concerns me.

NOTE: The following is an editorial opinion by me and does not necessarily reflect the views of the rest of this board:

If the Vikings sign Wallace and dump Harvin, my take is there would be no upside. The difference in overall talent between the two would leave a huge gap. I believe it would be madness on the part of the Vikings and I hope it doesn't happen. And no, I don't think Keenan Allen could fill the void either, not by a long, long shot. If the Vikings draft Allen, you'll find out what I mean. I really like Jarius Wright but Harvin can do some things that Wright can't. I'd much rather have Harvin, Wallace, Wright, and a WR from the draft as the team's WRs over Wallace, Wright, Allen, and whoever.
