DK Sweets wrote:Since we've recently talked LB/DE in this thread, I would like to point something out: we need to take a serious evaluation of what Danielle Hunter is.

A lot of his plays came from a two point stance last year. He was effectively a pass rushing specialist LB. He shouldn't be penciled in as the heir apparent to Robison, and we should also be cautious of drafting another speedy LB high in the draft.

If we draft a LB, I would hope it was a run stuffing 2 down back to pair with our already spectacular speed backers. That player would likely come later in the draft. I'm not sure how Hunter affects a possible early round DE, but I'm certainly not sold on him as the obvious long term answer yet.

I'm a huge fan of BPA, but if we found players with identical grades at our draft slot, if like to hit O-line and WR before DE or LB. I think our defense is talented and deep enough at this point where we can be afforded the luxury of spending picks in the later rounds and grooming the talent unless a player falls to us that is to good to pass up, and I'd really like to see how Hunter fits into the mix in year two before we potentially double down at a position that he would fill.
Hunter is an interesting player. I think he's more DE than LB, but he has some versatility. Everson is pretty versatile and so is Anthony Barr. Even Trattou is a pretty good athlete. With Zimmer's A gap defense, I think that kind of versatility could be used to disguise a lot of things. I won't be shocked if they add another player in that mold, like a Leonard Floyd from Georgia. It kind of depends how creative they want to be vs how conventional.

My recollection is that Hunter was a devastating run stopper in college, with weak sack stats. So I don't worry about his being one dimensional in that sense - maybe in the other sense, in that those six sacks might have been a statistical oddity when we look at his career in retrospect. If he truly can be the run stopper he was in college, as well as the pass rusher he was last year... Well, it's going to be pretty exciting times on the Vikings defense for the foreseeable future.

Anyone know why no one has picked up Reggie Nelson he is ranked 4th on best available players? He may be fairly cheap, so are all teams waiting for after the draft?

4. Reggie Nelson, safety: The entire league is surprised no one has signed him yet. He may be 32, but he's coming off a season in which he intercepted eight passes and had 14 pass defenses. He's a playmaker, but he needs a team to sign him. Most people thought he would sign around the time Eric Weddle did. Weddle ended up going to the Baltimore Ravens.
I think we are set at safety for now but depending how cheap he is, he may be worth the competition.

I'm guessing his asking price is more than teams are willing to pay. It'll likely come down before the draft. I'd love to sign him for the right price and let them all battle it out. Of course that'd be a lot of snaps to divvy up at this point.

Link below has a list of 5 players the vikings can still sign if they want to:

Some I like some I don't or not sure:

1) Reggie Nelson
2) Jared Cook
3) Percy Harvin
4) Jason Jones
5) Anquan Boldin

The article explains why each player works.

Glad he will retire a Viking. If this is in fact his last year. Since he signed a 1 year contract that was expected.

Its more of a sentimental, leadership, type signing then anything else, but he can still play football. At least they treated him with more respect then Winfield. Maybe cause his stock was higher. I would love it if Greenway could stay around the vikings organization. class A guy.
