I haven't watched too much footage of the WRs yet, but the little I saw of Doctson was impressive, and matches well with what I think would most benefit Teddy and this offense.Pondering Her Percy wrote:Thanks for the info Mondry!
Overall, I really like the WRs in this class. I would love either Treadwell, Doctson, or Boyd. Shepard and Coleman are smaller but remind me a lot of Diggs and can find ways to separate which we need.
The one guy I'm not big on that I've seen us taking in mocks is Michael Thomas from Ohio St. For whatever reason, he's just a "meh" type WR IMO. Nothing really sticks out to me with him.
We would be in solid position to snag either Treadwell or Doctson at #23. Boyd could very well be there at #54. I would be thrilled to have any of the three. Boyd getting a DUI kind of worries me.
All in all, my WR rankings would be as follows:
1a.) Laquon Treadwell
1b.) Josh Doctson
2.) Tyler Boyd
3.) Corey Coleman
4.) Sterling Shepard
5.) Michael Thomas

I thought Corey Coleman was bigger than he is...That's a bummer. I still think he will be the goods on the next level, but I feel like the Vikes want a big bodied guy.
I like all of the top 3 listed and I'm most intrigued by Boyd. I didn't see much of Michael Thomas to have an opinion on him. A guy outside of the top 5 prospects, but someone I can see being one of the best in this draft class is Leonte Carroo from Rutgers.
Carroo:
STRENGTHS: Solidly built with firm muscle definition for his frame. Displays terrific athleticism and body control to be a threat all over the field, changing gears well with vision to weave through defenses.
Detailed route-runner who understands how to fool defensive backs in his routes, using timing to bait and get the hips of defenders turned in his breaks. He also proven an impact player on special teams coverage.
WEAKNESSES: Only ordinary height and length. Arrested and charged Sept. 12 with simple assault under domestic violence and suspended two games by the program.

Coleman just had sports hernia surgery in December which caused him to miss Baylors bowl game.
Also wonder how much his size affects his durability in the NFL.

Coleman is drawing a lot of comparisons to Steve Smith. Tough, competitive, somewhat smaller stature, etc. Coleman has a huge chip on his shoulder and has no problem telling people how good he is. I like that fire in a guyhalfgiz wrote:Coleman just had sports hernia surgery in December which caused him to miss Baylors bowl game.

I do like Doctson. Treadwell is a little more of a "sure thing" to me. From a skill set standpoint, there isn't much difference between the two. What scares me about Doctson is that....is he just a "product of the system" coming out of TCU. They ran an "air-raid" type offense. Same goes for Corey Coleman.fiestavike wrote: I haven't watched too much footage of the WRs yet, but the little I saw of Doctson was impressive, and matches well with what I think would most benefit Teddy and this offense.
Treadwell didnt come from a system like that and toasted Alabama's Cyrus Jones a few times this year which is a little more intriguing.
Boyd broke Larry Fitzgeralds freshmen receiving record but there are some off the field concerns there as well.

DP I will admit that leaves one scratching their head wondering why they have talked about Clemmings moving to the left side. I think he would be better at right guard.dead_poet wrote:God help us if they believe Clemmings is our long-term LT. And prepare Bridgewater's tombstone.
What do they see that we don't?? Can Sparano make that happen? Is he the offensive line whisperer?

Where is this left side talk? I haven't heard anything to suggest that's an option. Seems to me his future is at RT (or RG).halfgiz wrote: DP I will admit that leaves one scratching their head wondering why they have talked about Clemmings moving to the left side. His low bench number scares me but he destroyed the athletic portion.halfgiz wrote:Report: Minnesota Vikings very interested in Cody Whitehair

7.32 3-cone time was third-fastest in Indy. 10-yard split of 1.73 was awesome.
Ryan Kelly has impressed, too.

mondry wrote: Living in OKC I've seen more than my fair share of sooner games. Shepard's solid, it looks like Walter football has him in the 3rd-5th round range and based off what I know of him I think he'd be a steal in the 5th round, a solid to great pick in the 4th, and probably a little to early for him in the 3rd although we'd be picking towards the end so it just depends what's there, it wouldn't kill me if he was the pick.
He's small and he's not terribly fast so he very well could be there in the 5th. Teams obviously emphasis size and speed for good reason but with that said I'd compare his -ceiling- to Greg Jennings with a middle of the road prediction being a slightly better Jarius Wright.
Another one of his problems is getting jammed at the line and given his comp to Jennings and Wright it shouldn't be a surprise that I think he'd have to play in the slot to maximize his ability.
I think that covers his negatives pretty well so his positives are obviously great route running, quickness, and good hands. I said he wasn't fast but that pertains mostly to what his expected 40 time will be and "Straight line" speed. Quickness is more about your acceleration and ability to maintain speed executing your route and that's where he really excels. Jennings ran a 4.48 40 and never had problems getting open because of his route running and quickness, I'd guess it'd be the same for Shepard.
Another thing to note is that in 2015 Shepard had 86 catches for 1288 while he had 51 for 970 the year before and every year he's essentially gotten better. With that said Baker Mayfield was a major upgrade at QB for the 2015 year but it shows the guy can produce in non ideal circumstances as well.
I think this next bit is important to our franchise, he's also just a good, hardworking kid.
"Shepard finished his Sooners career with 223 receptions for 3,482 yards and 26 touchdowns and was a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award as a senior. He earned an invitation to the Senior Bowl, where he earned the Practice Player of the Week award among wide receivers.
Shepard's family connection with Oklahoma football is a heart-warming tale. He wore No. 3 for the Sooners in honor of his late father, Derrick Shepard, who was a receiver for OU from 1983-86.
"That's been a lifelong goal of mine to play at Oklahoma," Shepard told Texans TV at the Senior Bowl. "I've seen a lot of great receivers go through there and seen the mark they've made for themselves and I definitely wanted to be one of those top guys. Fortunately, I was able to do that with some great coaching and a lot of guys around me that are good."
The Sooners' pass catcher also has the talent that makes it more than simply a feel-good story.
He led Oklahoma in receiving as a junior in 2014 with 51 catches for 970 yards and five touchdowns, averaging a conference-best 19.0 yards per reception."
I watch a lot of Big 12 football, and I agree with this take. A slightly better version of Jarius Wright is exactly what I was thinking before I read your post.
I know I've said it a million times here since last fall, but Doctson is a perfect fit for our needs. If we decide to go WR, I hope it's him.

I think he'll also probably be a very good player. For some reason ball skills get undervalued. I could never understand why DeAndre Hopkins wasn't picked much earlier and I was dying for the Vikings to take him. He's a different kind of guy than Doctson, but they have in common that they make so many great catches with body positioning and great hands. Those are guys who can win the 50/50 ball that allow a QB to just cut it loose when they read 1 on 1.

Watching Doctson in the gauntlet made him the guy I would want. He looked so effortless and smooth catching the ball. The other guy I like is Fuller, reminds me of Percy Harvin
The term fan comes from FANatic or fanatical.
Re: PHP's "Way Too Early But I Love It" 2016 Mock Offseason
Yeah, Shepard ran a 4.48 which is the same as Jennings but slower than Wright's 4.42.Texas Vike wrote:

Bench press Shepard was at the top with 20 reps, Wright had 11.
Vertical jump Shepard was at the top with 41 inches to Wrights 38.
Broad Jump Shepard was 123 inches to Wrights 120, both fairly average.
3 cone drill Shepard had 7.0 seconds to Wrights 6.93, both fairly average.
20 yard Shuttle Shepard had 4.35 seconds to Wrights 3rd best performance of 4.03
So it seems Shepard is stronger and a better leaper / jumper while Wright seems to be a better cutter and slightly faster.

I agree about Doctson, he looked solid yesterday, if we can address the O-line with a solid free agent I'd feel pretty good about taking him in the first if he's there but I'm not sure he will be now, his combine was really strong.
40 = 4.50
bench = 14 reps
vert = 41.0
broad = 131.0
3 cone 6.84
20 yard shuttle 4.08
60 yd shuttle 11.06
so he's 3 inches taller than shepard and 8 pounds heavier but basically better in everything but bench press and 0.02 seconds on his 40. Same vertical.
Re: PHP's "Way Too Early But I Love It" 2016 Mock Offseason
mayock still has treadwell has his #1 and sees him as a late first rd prospect. i'd still take him at #23 over any other wr.

And, most importantly, his tape is WAY more impressive!
The only thing that gives me pause is whether he'll be able to do his thing in our currently not-very-potent offense. I mean, Doctson needs a QB and an offensive coordinator who have a pair of cojones --they have to be willing to strike hard down field and let him go pluck the ball out of the defender's grasp. If we had Favre or a like-minded QB, I'd have no hesitations whatsoever.
