Will anyone break Krause's record?

Post by CbusVikesFan »

Just how unbreakable is his record of 81 career interceptions? The closest active player is Charles Woodson with 60. He is in his 17th year coming up. Next is DeAngelo Hall who is way behind the mark and has played 10 seasons.
This record, after another twenty or thirty seasons could be the longest standing career achievement. What do you think?

I don't think it will ever be broken.

That has been my feeling about it since he made the HOF. Granted it was a totally different era but a record is a record for the person who has their name attached to it.

It was a different era but it was an era where passing was less emphasized than it is now, which makes the record even more impressive!

It was also in the pre 1978 rule changes era where dbs could make contact with WRs anywhere on the field, and offensive lineman couldnt block using their hands. Still, extremely impressive, and I doubt it will ever be broken.

Let's just say if any DB even comes close to it, they would be one of the highest paid players in the NFL. In order to break it, one would have to average 6 interception over a 14 year period. No one has come close that in year. Even Charles Woodson isn't close. And he has been playing for 17 years. The only player currently on that pace, that I know of is Richard Sherman. But he is already 27, and he would have to do it until he is 37. If there would be someone who could come close that is playing today, I would say it would be him. But Like all players, they will taper off as they get older. Krause had 46 Int. in his first 7 years. So if Sherman is around 50 after 7 years keep an eye on him.

I think it's possible. Probably unlikely though.

You think with as much as teams pass these days that someone could really rack up the INT's, but your INT #'s come from safeties and teams usually have a stable of 3 or 4 guys that rotate depending on the package and your better safeties (Harrison Smith, Earl Thomase, etc.) are used so many different ways becasue of their versatility that they're not exclusively in coverage in order to get enough opportunities to reach 81 for a career.

One of the most impressive things to me is how he accomplished that in an era where they played 14 or less regular season games . It also helped to have that group of "Purple People Eaters" constantly pressuring every QB and forcing a ton of those ints. If you look at the highlights, many times wounded duck passes were plucked out of the sky by him.
I have said this before, Harrison Smith really reminds me of Krause, both in stature and skill sets. I thing Smith would have done pretty damn could playing behind that pass rush, as would many others.
Bottom line, I doubt that anyone will break that record in my life time.

Basically a current NFL player would have to average 8 plus INT a year for a very long career ...

I think most years, maybe one player gets close to that...

So ten years of being the best corner in the league, and having other QB's still throw at the man you are covering,
multiple times a game.

Yeah, that record is pretty safe.. The only way it gets broken is if a very very good corner plays on an awesome
defense with two or three other very good corners. In free agency era I don't all those things combining for a long
career.

You make a good point about free agency. That (and the salary cap) are also factors working against anybody breaking Krause's record.

Unless there is a huge change in rules, it won't be broken. As stated earlier, it would take a 13 year career and an average of 6 picks a season. 6 picks in a season is a phenomenal season. It would take the Adrian Peterson of DB's never missing a game to break the record.
