Re: Off the Board
Yeah Rhodes, Waynes, Cap in the slot and Harrison Smith would be one scary defensive backfield. I wouldnt care who the other safety was. I would be just fine keeping Blanton on the cheap if we have those guys around him.NDirish wrote:Give me Waynes in that scenario.

Off the Board: O-Line run drops gift in Vikings' lap
http://blog.startribune.com/sports/acce ... ikings-lapLast time, we looked at what the Vikings might do if the top three wide receivers were gone before they were on the clock on April 30. Since that post, the Vikings addressed the position by trading for Mike Wallace. But will the addition of Wallace preclude them from taking a wide receiver early?
In this installment of the series, let’s look at what the Vikings, who still have a big hole at left guard, might do if there is a run on offensive linemen before they are on the clock. Will they pounce on a wide receiver who falls to them or tackle another need, such as cornerback or defensive end?
What would you do?

I'd have a hard time passing on Beasley in this scenario. Barr and Beasely together could be a lot of fun to watch. Serious speed.

In that scenario, I'd probably have my pick for Cooper in before Roger Goodell could say "The Vikings are on the clock".dead_poet wrote:Next installment just posted:

Re: Off the Board
Cooper, Beasley or Waynes at #11?
I would roll the dice and take the athletic freak Vic Beasley. My concern with Beasley is whether he can drop in coverage as an OLB in a 4-3 scheme. While at Clemson he did drop in coverage from time to time but he was mostly a hand in the dirt DE. His athleticism was literally off the chart at the combine so being able to coach him up in pass coverage seems doable to me. Beasley's short shuttle time (4.15) was faster than the five-year combine average for corners, and his three-cone time (6.89) was quicker than the five-year combine average for safeties. Add that to his blazing 4.53 / 40 at 246 pounds, 35 reps on the bench and a 41" vertical.
Last year there were some concerns about drafting Anthony Barr at #9 given his lack of time playing defense. I'd say those concerns have been put to rest. The fact the Spielman/Zimmer valued Barr's athleticism enough to warrant taking him that high could also carryover to Beasley if he's still on the board at #11 (not likely in my opinion). And it's not like Beasely is a just a workout warrior, he was very productive at Clemson and might have had an outside chance of being a first round pick if he had come out last year. To me he's a clone of Von Miller. Would Zimmer like to have Von Miller to plug into his defense?
Beasely's going to have a higher value for a team running a 3-4. Several teams in the top 10 run a 3-4; isn't Chicago rumored to be switching to a 3-4? But there's also more talent for top edge rushers than 4-3 LBs with Dante Fowler, Shane Ray, Randy Gregory, etc. We have a glaring need at LB and this year's LB class is really thin; I think it's the weakest position in the draft. How can you have someone like Paul Dawson in the nickel when he runs in the 4.9s? Heck how can you have him in the base without team's exploiting that? I think Dawson is going to drop like a rock and end up in the 4th round despite being Mayock's #1 rated LB.

Re: Off the Board
I'd also go with Cooper. Although trading down a couple spots is interesting too as dropping 2-3 spots means you still have one of those 3 guys on the board. Nah screw it, take Cooper.Mothman wrote: In that scenario, I'd probably have my pick for Cooper in before Roger Goodell could say "The Vikings are on the clock".
Re: Off the Board
I would draft Trae Waynes at 11, the drop off at corner is to severe to not take the best corner in the draft. I think we could still grab Dorial Green-Beckham or Jaelen Strong at our 2nd round pick or trade up a few to get one of those wideouts. I believe that those two wide reveivers have just as high or a higher ceiling than somw of the earlier receivers like Cooper. I love Cooper, but I love the thought of the best secondary in the nfc north a lot more, considering who we play 8 games a year.dead_poet wrote:Next installment just posted:
