His sample size is way too small to say how good his deep ball is right now.

Seriously? Wow. Alright then.

I'm gonna have to go back and try to find what I was reading then. Cause the two things that stuck out to me considerably were "Teddy had the 3rd best season of all rookie QBs in NFL History", and (from what I thought I read apparently) "Teddy had the best deep passing % of all starting qbs in league last half of season".

Could it have been that he had the best completion % of that specific 10% or something like that, maybe?

I don't know tons about the stat work with NFL But I Do try to make sure that I read multiple sources that claim the same thing before I try to open my mouth. But sometimes the foot just finds it's own way regardless. Lol.

Weird.

Lol, ehhhhhhh, I dunno, that's right on the edge maybe. (And I realize that Im most likely just self rationalizing my bias here), But, while Rodgers is definitely an insanely good QB, absolutely in the Top 20 no question. AP however, I am completely comfortable saying and believing that AP is THE best RB in the history of the NFL. He just is. Not even a conversation worth having saying otherwise.

(and this is even with growing up in a household with a stepdad from and raised in Chicago who will never let a day go by without reminding you of Walter Payton, and personally growing up and coming of age with my favorite player being Barry Sanders, even to the point where as a kid who was always bigger and very much taller than everyone around me, i still dreamed that one day i will fond a way to make myself 5'8, lol)

And it's not like Packer fans are defending their Rodgers with the belief that other qbs are even decent just never will be at the level of their Rodgers. They straight up don't even recognize there even ARE other qbs. The Green Bay Rodgers will always be the only team that deserves to play in the NFL.

@GoesslingESPN: Sounds like #Vikings are indeed getting a visit lined up for George Selvie this week. Would be a good fit at DE, especially against the run.
@GoesslingESPN: FWIW, @PFF rated Selvie the 14th-best 4-3 DE in the league against the run last year. Griffen was 9th, Robison 54th, Wootton 55th.

This Wallace/Jennings situation really came out of nowhere! I didn't have time to fully process it this weekend..I don't know how I feel yet.

On the one hand, I like the talent Wallace brings as a deep threat, opening up our offense. I'm not particularly thrilled about the other aspects of his game, but it is what it is. He can bring a different dimension to the offense, and we are just brimming with speed at the WR position now.

On the other hand, I hate his contract. That said, there's no dead money on it after this year, so it's an easy out if things go south. That's a plus. Not to mention, the price we paid for him was low. I hate giving up draft picks though.

As far as Jennings, I hate to see him released, but the writing was on the wall. He is a class act, and despite the brief nature of his team here, he'll always be a Viking in my eyes.

I gotta figure out exactly where I stand, but I can't say I LOVE the move.

I defintely understand where you're coming from. I mean Jennings had an $11 million cap hit which was insane. Wallace is 3 years younger and brings a lot more versatility to this offense than Jennings does. Jennings was simply a possession WR. Wallace is much more than that and has the ability to take the top off of defenses. Jennings was never going to give us that. No matter what, we were going to have a WR with a big cap number. I doubt we released Jennings if we never traded for Wallace. So if someone asked me what WR I would want with a big cap number, it would be Wallace hands down.

Now that we released Jennings, I still believe it's very possible we draft a WR at 11. Especially if it's Cooper. I can't see us passing on Cooper if he's sitting there at 11. And if that happens, we would have one hell of a WR corps. Wallace, Cooper, Johnson, Wright and Patterson

I don't either. You take the best player available and Cooper would be at 11. That receiving core would be scary! Don't know if Teddy would have time to get them the all though.

So, are the Vikings done with Free Agency?
EDIT: guess not
http://blog.startribune.com/sports/acce ... rge-selvie

Let's do this!!!! I think that Selvie would be a huge upgrade at LE. Never been big on Robison.

Well, Bridgewater had 40 pass attempts over 20+ yards for roughly 11%, Rodgers had 48 pass attempts over 20+ yards for about 10%. Luck was 12%, Brees 8% and Payton Manning 9%. 10% is right in line with other QBS. Now, maybe they were talking about his completion percentage which was low for passes over 20+ yards at 32%.

It sounds like they may be ready to make a run at George Selvie. I'd applaud that decision - he's exactly the type you want to seek out in unrestricted free agency. An under the radar, cost effective, and talented football player. Bring him in to help out on the defensive line rotation. I had hoped they would look into Jeron Johnson for those same reasons, but looks like he signed on with Washington. Good for them, they're getting a deal, IMO.

I was quite bummed out that they didn't get Michael Johnson. I would have much preferred him to Selvie, as they are similar players in terms of their game, but Johnson is quite a bit better, IMO. Another benefit of signing Johnson would have been that it would not have counted against us in the compensatory pick formula next year. Of course, it would have also been quite a bit more expensive to sign MJ.

I really am happy with the way that Rick and Co. have approached unrestricted free agency this year. The Wallace trade deviated from that general approach, and I'm not thrilled with it, but I am trying to keep an open mind. It just hurts to lose a draft pick (even a fifth) and the contract is just so absurd, IMO. That said, it wasn't a UFA pickup, and the fact that there is no dead money beyond this year is huge too. If Wallace can produce like he did in Pittsburgh, I'll be ecstatic. I'm kind of in the wait and see frame of mind with that one. I do think Jennings was going to be gone either this year or next. I'm glad they were heady enough to admit the mistake they made (paying him that much), cut their losses, and moved on.

But in terms of being smart and not overspending on flashy UFAs, they have been right on point. I realize that doesn't really line up with everyone's personal philosophy, and it's not the most exciting approach, but it's a tried and true method, whether you like it or not. Personally, I wouldn't have it any other way. I saw a tidbit in a couple places this week that the Packers have one player on their team (Peppers) who has played a game for another team. Now, I hate the Packers as much as the next God fearing Minnesotan, but it's hard to argue with their success. Additionally, teams like Pittsburgh, Seattle, San Francisco, Baltimore, New England, etc. have been traditionally under active in UFA and build via the draft. It works. You get good players, you keep the ones you can when their contracts run out, and you get compensatory picks for the ones that leave to get overpaid elsewhere.

Speaking of compensatory picks..I know some scoffed at the idea of keeping it in mind this year, but I do believe we're in a good spot to potentially be awarded one next year (as of now, anyways):
@GoesslingESPN
#Vikings have also been picky on UFA market because of interest in street free agents, like Johnson. Those don't affect compensatory picks.
Here's the chart right now:

UFAs Lost
  • Jerome Felton
    Jasper Brinkley
    Christian Ponder
UFAs Gained
  • Shaun Hill
I also recalculated our active contracts and cap space, and updated the OP with all transactions and such, as of the Wallace trade and Jennings release - this also includes the Hill signing and all other re-signings. By my calculations we currently have $6,159,191 in cap space. Keep in mind this includes all the players we signed since the end of the season (above and beyond the regular 53 man roster).
