Re: 2015 Offseason - Free Agent/Draft Tracker
the jets either gave up a 4th round or 5th round pick for brandon marshall and someone noted how "valuable a 4th round pick is." enlighten me as to which one of any of our 4th round picks in the past 8, or even 10 years have been anywhere near a brandon marshall? and marshall right now is better than jennings any day of the week. he is taller and faster.

Re: 2015 Offseason - Free Agent/Draft Tracker
I'd bet lots of money that no team in the NFCN was going to sniff Marshal for a 4th rounder....especially when there was probably no shortage of teams in the AFC with better picks to offer who would jump to sign the guy.mosscarter wrote:the jets either gave up a 4th round or 5th round pick for brandon marshall and someone noted how "valuable a 4th round pick is." enlighten me as to which one of any of our 4th round picks in the past 8, or even 10 years have been anywhere near a brandon marshall? and marshall right now is better than jennings any day of the week. he is taller and faster.

Everson Griffen. But I'd still rather have Marshall than this year's 4th.mosscarter wrote:the jets either gave up a 4th round or 5th round pick for brandon marshall and someone noted how "valuable a 4th round pick is." enlighten me as to which one of any of our 4th round picks in the past 8, or even 10 years have been anywhere near a brandon marshall? and marshall right now is better than jennings any day of the week. he is taller and faster.
Also, Jennings is definitely faster than Marshall. Marshall is the better player, but we don't need to embellish that point.

Re: 2015 Offseason - Free Agent/Draft Tracker
on the contrary, we should embellish since this is a discussion board. maybe the free agent pool wasn't that great this year, so be it. but we could have gotten brandon marshall for (next to nothing if you want to talk realistically), now pair him with wright, johnson, and a better prepared patterson your receiving core is set. marshall is WAY bigger size wise than jennings and a year younger. all i know is this, i hate it when people in general, or any other entity in life sit there and do absolutely nothing. and that is what the vikings did. this whole "building strictly through the draft philosophy" is old. look at what the seahawks just did. they don't need jimmy graham, and the never drafted marshawn lynch either. in order for the draft to work successfully is to combine it with at least a FEW free agent signings. i can't wait to see who we draft in the 4th and 5th round this year. i'll be on the edge of my seat. and someone let me know if yankey even makes the practice squad. remember what a "steal" he was supposed to be last year?

Re: 2015 Offseason - Free Agent/Draft Tracker
There's no way the Bears deal Marshal to the Vikings for a 4th. They don't even let the NFC North know they are shopping him. The deal was done to separate him from Cutler who they were forced to keep because his $15.5mil salary is g-g-guarranteed next season.
Marshal is in the conversation with Cobb/Nelson and Megatron as the best wideout in the division.
If they could have dumped Cutler I say they keep Marshal.

This is a message board...so we should throw rationality out the window? We clearly joined for different reasons.mosscarter wrote:on the contrary, we should embellish since this is a discussion board.
You assume that we could have got him for the same price that the Jets got him for, and I think that's highly unlikely. The Bears decided to move on from him but I highly doubt they wanted to play him twice a year.maybe the free agent pool wasn't that great this year, so be it. but we could have gotten brandon marshall for (next to nothing if you want to talk realistically), now pair him with wright, johnson, and a better prepared patterson your receiving core is set. marshall is WAY bigger size wise than jennings and a year younger.
In general or any other entity in life? Huh?all i know is this, i hate it when people in general, or any other entity in life sit there and do absolutely nothing. and that is what the vikings did.
I don't think overspending is a good way to do business. You're neglecting the fact that free agency is far from over. The Vikings didn't pay for the big names, but in general, free agent spending has not been a great indicator of team success.
1) Both of those players were acquired by trade, not free agency. We have made one trade already, and the Adrian Peterson situation is still hanging in the air.this whole "building strictly through the draft philosophy" is old. look at what the seahawks just did. they don't need jimmy graham, and the never drafted marshawn lynch either. in order for the draft to work successfully is to combine it with at least a FEW free agent signings.
2) You don't even know how the Graham trade is going to work.
3) When Seattle went all out to get Percy Harvin, how did that work out for them? I'll tell you - it made their team worse and our team better. Harvin did almost nothing for that team and cost them valuable draft picks - one ended up being Xavier Rhodes for us.
4) Speaking of draft picks, you're acting like Seattle built their team through Free Agency. Wilson and most of that defense (including those three amazing DBs) were all acquired through the draft.
I'm sorry that this offseason hasn't been exciting enough for you, but the Vikings HAVE found Everson Griffen, John Sullivan, and Brandon Fusco on the third day of the draft. The Seahawks (you brought them up, not me) have found arguably the best CB and SS in the league on day 3. It becomes less likely to pick superstars that late in the draft, but they aren't "next to nothing" picks like you say.i can't wait to see who we draft in the 4th and 5th round this year. i'll be on the edge of my seat. and someone let me know if yankey even makes the practice squad. remember what a "steal" he was supposed to be last year?

I'm not sure why people want Brandon Marshall. In terms of the locker room, he has worn out his welcome on every NFL team he has played for in 2-3 seasons. The guy is an epic pain in the #$@. Then you want to talk about off the field issues? The last thing the Vikings need to deal with at this point is the scrutiny that will come their way with one more domestic slip up by Marshall. I'm sure they'd love explaining to the Radisson why they were the team that decided to give another chance to a guy with that extensive track record.

Chicago has announced 3 year deals with both Antrel Rolle and Eddie Royal. I'm not excited about either player coming to the division.

yeah i'm the nutcase when our team hasn't done one single solitary thing to improve themselves. end of story. and how could any of you know if we would have gotten the same deal the jets got for marshall or not, are you g.m.'s now? i know it seems this board is full of them, but get real. maybe spielman himself posts on here. the sad truth is the vikings have no guts whatsoever. aside from drafting moss in the first round and bringing favre here we are spineless. those have been the only exciting things that have happened in 15 years. and the only reason favre came here was because of bevell. speilman has traded into the first round for some picks, so what????????????? that is what a good g.m. should do. and the fact that we gave up 3 picks for patterson looks freaking fantastic right now i'll say that. all of those so high on "we need to keep picks," need to look no further than what we gave up to get him. 3 picks for patterson, or one late rounder this year for brandon marshall? yeah that sounds about right. i live near pittsburgh and for some reason grew up a vikings fan; but its not a coincidence they have 6 titles and we have none. trust me. brandon marshall has been a 1,000 yd or over receiver in 7 out of 9 seasons. other than winfield and jared allen, who have we really brought in through free agency that has helped us immediately and for the long term? my guess is fred smoot, or would you say greg jennings? i have to say jennings had to play with a rookie this past year; but at 31 and his salary he should feel blessed. only we would keep him on for that rate. if they cut him loose tomorrow he would be lucky to make half of that.

WHOA!!! THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!!!!!!DK Sweets wrote:I'm not arguing the idea in general, I just think this isn't a year where it really matters for us. If we think either of those Johnsons are great fits, grab them (that feels weird to say).

Don't hate on my Buckeyes. Some of the best Vikings went to Ohio State.

Free agent OG Justin Blalock will visit the Lions on Thursday.
Unless someone unexpected jumps into the mix, it looks like Blalock's decision will come down to Detroit or St. Louis. Blalock has spent the last eight seasons with Atlanta, starting 125 of a possible 128 games.
