Signing Marshall would not have solved our WR need at all. This team is young, and it would be nice to get a young #1 WR to grow with Teddy, not sign another old wr, cut and pay the previous old wr in Jennings, and then in a year or two do it over again. Just solve the problem at the position for the long haul and be done with it.

Wide Receiver seems to be the one position in the draft the last few years, that has almost guaranteed to turn out. So I would feel way more confident if we drafted a #1 WR and eliminated that position from our list of needs. We continue to do this bring in a veteran thing and it doesn't work out.

We knew the risk with drafting CP and it has shown, but he is still young and can still be a great WR in this league. Only time will tell.

Like the Bucs and Bears last year - they knew what they were doing throwing big money at players in UFA...or the Redskins all those years. I'll pass. A fourth round pick is not something to waste. Good teams build through the draft.

Yeah, if anything seems to be proven year in and year out, it's that patience is more valuable than jumping in.

I also agree about CP - I've tamed my expectations, but I still think he can be one heck of a weapon if he puts in the hard work and the coaches get a good feel for when to use his special plays.

Pseudo Everything wrote: I know his background with Zimmer. You're assuming he's the same player he was two years ago when he was in Cincy. People change. Look at Jason Worilds. Retires out of the blue at 27 years old to be a preacher or something because his heart is no longer in football. And there are countless examples of players who get big money deals in FA and then suddenly their play falls off. Johnson clearly didn't show up last year.

As I recall our offer to Johnson last year was very similar to what Tampa was offering. If the connection to Zimmer was so strong why did he choose Tampa? I believe he said he wanted to be closer to home (Alabama). Lame.

All I'm saying is tread carefully with this guy.
I think he was hurt last season so that could have had something to do with him not performing well. Maybe he wasn't a fit with that defense either. I understand what you're saying but it's not like we're talking about a model franchise throwing a guy out the door here. The Bucs just cut arguably the best CB in the NFL last year and none of their other signings worked out either. Personally I wouldn't be worried about Johnson if the Vikings decided to sign him. Even last year's version of Johnson might be an upgrade over Robison.

Anyone besides me think we should try to make a play for RFA Tashuan Gipson from Cleveland? Only a second rounder and qualifying match offer.

I like that idea a lot (especially given the shallow safety class) but I doubt it happens. You're essentially pre-selecting your second-rounder, which is pretty limiting (as far as trade-up and good players on the board) and aggressive. Doesn't feel like a Rick move but I'd support it.

Why did I suddenly think of the scene from Princess Bride where Westley and Vizzini have a "Battle of wits" "to the Death"?

I just hope Spielman is the man in Black not Vizzini

Haha for sure Conte is pretty bad. I can't remember if he thrived in Lovies Tampa 2 in Chicago??

Goldson might be worth a cheap flyer as he may have been lost out there in the Tampa 2.

What did the 49ers run when he earned the big pay day?

I think it would be a great move but can't see Spielman giving up the pick.

He's gonna be a Viking, I can feel it.

why does that even matter? The Vikings don't have a single free agent who will receive enough money for us to be compensated with a compensatory pick.

Brinkley
Ponder
Wooton
Ducasse

If they are signed by another team before June 1st, they count in the formula as a lost UFA (of course based on the salary and playing time they wind up getting - if you know the constraints of the formula, kindly tell). We have signed one (Hill) and lost one so far (Felton).
