This is obviously very, very premature, but it's amazing the contrast between this offseason and the next two, in terms of our own UFAs that we will have to work to retain. Barely any MAJOR UFAs this year (Tom Johnson probably most notable, pricey). Between the next two offseasons, the following players will have expiring contracts (among others):

Lot of money needed to be spent. Quite a few "core" guys among those to go along with a number of solid role players, I do really appreciate the way we've drafted lately, that's a lot of quality talent, to be honest.

Of course, the guys we (inevitably) lose to other teams in those years will hopefully net us compensatory picks in the following year's draft.

Build through the draft, sign bargain rack unrestricted free agents/players who've been released (the ones who don't count against compensatory pick formula), re-sign the guys we drafted and developed (most of them), get compensatory picks when the guys we can't re-sign get paid elsewhere (more firepower to build through draft), rinse and repeat.

It's hard to decide what to target in this draft for me in the first round.

I think our receiving corps is adequate - Jarius is a nice #3 guy, and Jennings a solid #2. Can Patterson or Johnson emerge as a #1 threat? Rudolph is a stud when healthy, and Ford has been decent as his backup. You can always get better, but it doesn't cry out as a position of need to me.

If we lose 3/5 of the offensive line to injury again, it doesn't really matter much - you just aren't going to get great production in the run game or solid pass protection from the 6-8 best OL's on your team. It seems to me that Boling is a guy we might want to overpay for a tad, just to solidify the position.

So that makes the guys I really like - the top three WR's and Scherff - picks that really don't fill a hole (assuming we grab Boling or another G).

That means the best player in a position of need would be Wayne. But I'm a bit skittish on first round CB's.

So perhaps the best thing that can happen from my standpoint is that we sign Boling, and don't have a strong need/value pick available at #11, and can really play all the options, including trading back to the #21 area, to pick up a mid-second. And we could use that to get back into the first round again, so we can have the standard Double-Rick-Pick.

Good post, what about a potentially monster DE like Fowler or Beasley if they are available?

Owen Daniels and Fasano TE are both out there

there both a little old but Daniels is an upgrade over Ford

Fasano is a better TE than Ellison, Bostick, and Zack Line if we play him that way


Andre Johnson for the right price would be another possibility he had good numbers last year ...

A short bonus laden contract and I wouldn't mind him ..

Jets will sign G James Carpenter.
After striking out on big-ticket guards like Orlando Franklin and Mike Iupati, the Jets settle for Carpenter. The Seahawks' first-round pick in 2011 has struggled with conditioning for much of his career, in part leading to 19 missed games across four seasons. Carpenter, a far better pass-protector than run-blocker, will replace Willie Colon for the Jets.

Vikings checking on defensive backs

The Minnesota Vikings continued to take stock of the free-agent market at a number of different positions on Monday, but there was a noticeable focus on the secondary through their efforts.

According to league sources, the Vikings made calls on a wide range of cornerbacks, from the Green Bay Packers' Davon House to the Philadelphia Eagles' Bradley Fletcher. According to 1500ESPN.com, they also called about Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Brice McCain, and they were believed to have inquired about the Dallas Cowboys' Sterling Moore, as well. It's advisable to take news of these preliminary phone calls with a grain of salt -- expressing interest in a player is free, after all -- but we can at least see a trend in the players the Vikings are discussing.
