There is no way they are bringing Ponder back. I'm not sure why people keep thinking this. I have seen multiple tweets saying the Vikings already have a few free agent backups in mind.

Demi wrote:Other than that, no reason to pay Cassell that. Sign a guy to a veteran minimum, or draft a guy. Or hopefully both. But no reason to pay a backup that much money. Addition by subtraction....
That's exactly why this was a great trade. For any team to ever get picks for a 32 year old backup thats owed 4 million is a great move.

Honestly, it will probably be even more than 45 because of compensatory picks that will be added in there. This is a very deep draft and it gives us ammo to pull off any trade-ups we want as well. So yeah it's a much better situation than what we were in. The first pick in the 5th round carries a hell of a lot more weight than the 13th pick in the 6th. Think about it. If we didnt make that trade, 45+ players would pass in front of us before we picked. Well maybe a little less since we have our own 5th still but either way, that's a lot of players that we would miss out on if we don't make that trade.

Exactly what I'm saying as well. The chances of a backup reviving a team or pulling off some kind of miracle is slim to none. Spielman's not dumb, he's not going to go into next year with Ponder as the #2. He'll get a somewhat-reliable veteran than can help Teddy.

If Andrew Luck goes down, how bad would the Colts be? If Manning went down, how bad would the Broncos be?? Rodgers?? Brees??.....I mean it's all the same. Those teams are screwed if they lose their starting QB. Matt Cassel was one of the better backups in the NFL but he's not going to win us a Super Bowl, nor is any other teams backups.

We SAVED $4 million in cap space, we GAINED a 5th round pick (basically a late 4th), and we GAINED a 2016 7th. And we lost what?? Matt Cassel and a 6th?? ......Darn.

another thing to consider is cassel's health. those foot injuries especially broken bones can be troublesome even after the healing process is complete.

I agree, this was a stupid move. If Bridgewater goes down we are totally screwed if we don't get a vet in here asap. This move should have made been NEXT year after Teddy had a another Year under his belt. Gosh we continue to make bad moves at QB over and over and over

why do people have to get so worked up over every little thing?

Matt Cassel was going to get released, straight up, and if not, I believe he had an opt available in his contract again this off season, so he was gone no matter what happened.

When I read this earlier today I was shocked that there was even a team willing to trade for him. Anything is good value for a Matt Cassel type player. Remember, Anquan Boldin was once traded for a 6th round pick coming off an incredible playoff run. Matt Cassel is mid-top level BACKUP QB coming of a season ending injury and we got probably more value than a 6th round pick for him.

Why was it 45 and not 32 or 33??? Not arguing or disputing, just haven't had a chance to read the details and am curious. I thought Minnesota and Buffalo were pretty close in the draft order??

Buffalo acquired Tampa Bay's 2015 5th round pick in a previous trade, which was the pick they included in the trade, not their own 5th rounder this year.
Multiple trades of Tampa Bay's fifth-round selection:

Tampa Bay → Buffalo (PD). Tampa Bay traded this selection and a seventh-round selection in 2014 (221st) to Buffalo in exchange for Buffalo's fifth-round selection in 2014 (149th).[source 9]
Buffalo → Minnesota (PD). Buffalo traded this selection and a 2016 seventh-round selection to Minnesota in exchange for quarterback Matt Cassel and Minnesota's 2015 sixth-round selection

Cassel is a free agent in 2016.

is there really a difference between cassel and charlie whitehurst, shaun hill or jason campbell at this point? we basically flipped cassel for a higher draft pick, a filler pick next year and will probably save us 2 or 3 million in cap space. what's not to like?

Just read that Fusco was surprised by the move and said that Cassel would be missed in the sense of vet leadership in the lockerroom. He also was in favor of keeping Ponder, citing the complexity of Turner's offense being a reason for wanting to keep guys on that have a grasp.

That part was interesting to me cause it speaks to what may have been Cordarelle's biggest issue and the whole offense in general...outside of injuries, suspensions and a rook under center.
This unit could make a leap this season just based on understanding the system better.
Throw in the return of the injured guys and possibly Peterson...who knows.

I was not under the impression that Turner's offense was so much complicated, rather it used a completely unique terminology.....maybe that's the same thing?

I was not a fan of the move, and I am still a little annoyed. Cassel is a quality back up quarterback and wasn't breaking the bank by any measure. Honestly, other than Brian Hoyer, there isn't a QB on the market as good as Matt Cassel. I preferred the stability at the position.

On the other hand, it sounded as though Minnesota was ready to move on from Cassel regardless of whether or not they could find a trade partner. Therefore, getting some compensation for him is better than getting nothing.

I will be curious to see who this team thinks is as good as/better than Matt Cassel when free agency opens.
