My guess is that it has to do with Cassel's attitude toward being deemed a backup from day 1. If he was going to be a PITA about it, then it was best to part ways. IMO, it was a good move.mmvikes wrote: I am with you HVF. Cassel would be a better backup than the FA options out there. Maybe Sanchez but he isn't coming here with Teddy set as the starter.

It would be a formidable group.DK Sweets wrote:Why not both?
I'm actualy open to TJack as the second stringer. I'm sure he's learned tons of in terms of leadership....plus he seemed to play quite well for Seattle when he got on th field. Don't know why he would leave there though...seems like a good fit.
I think Ponder is a guy who could have a good career as a backup too...but he's become such a pariah in Minny that I doubt they'll even consider it. I would though, if he was accepting of the role.

Good for Matt. He doesn't have many years left. Better oppurtunity for him to try and start in Buffalo, than hold a clipboard here.
If Teddy goes down Cassell isn't taking us very far anyways.

I think Shaun Hill is the most reliable out of all the people mentioned. He always did very well in Detroit when he had to fill in for Stafford. Living in Michigan, I watch all the vikings games and lions games, even though I'm not a detroit fan whatsoever. It just makes me confident that Hill is a better backup than Cassel!

Re: Cassel traded to Buffalo
This is a great trade IMO. The 5th round pick we have is the first pick in the 5th so you could almost consider it a late 4th. I'm not sure why some are freaking out over this. To get draft picks for a 32 year old backup that's owed over $4 mill is GRAVY. We save money and gain draft picks. Now we also don't have to pay a backup near the money Cassel was making because now we have a true starter. Also, gaining extra picks simply gives Spielman ammo to move around when he wants. I thought we would cut Cassel, so this is even better, IMO.
4.75 in cap savings and we go from the 11th pick in the sixth round to the 1st pick in the fifth - that's a significant move up. Plus we snag an extra 7th next year.
All for a guy that was going to walk next offseason (or be cut this offseason).
I like it.

If Peterson is moved and Greenway released/restructured before FA its hard to see the vikings not being players in free agencyfrosted wrote:I thought we would cut Cassel, so this is even better, IMO.

That's a valid point, by my calculations we are now $20,712,524 under the adjusted cap number. That's of course before any Greenway or Peterson happenings. Probably about six million of that will be needed for signing draft picks.fiestavike wrote: If Peterson is moved and Greenway released/restructured before FA its hard to see the vikings not being players in free agency
We're in pretty good shape from a financial standpoint.
I would still prefer a conservative approach in free agency.

Good chance we do Jennings too. That will free up more money.frosted wrote: That's a valid point, by my calculations we are now $20,712,524 under the adjusted cap number. I second that vote.
Side note: I met Colt when I was at UT Austin. Great kid.

If they continue to create more cap space I'd like to see them address the o-line and take a swing at a stud DB in free agencey....it would give them more flexibility in the draft.

Re: Cassel traded to Buffalo
Regardless,we just need to pray that the need for the back up QB never comes up...none of the candidates out there are going to carry you thru to a winning season. In todays NFL, the talent pool is so thin that if you lose your starter QB, you are dead in the water. Hence, all the extreme rules protecting the QB in today's game. In the end, it made no sense to pay big bucks to your back up QB unless he is a project for your future like Rodgers was under Favre.
Re: Cassel traded to Buffalo
Locker has talent but hasn't been able to stay healthy. Not sure what his price tag would be.
