Demi - people can change. I'm not saying he has definitely changed, but it's not like we're investing trading back into the first round for him.

Mike aid - I don't think many people would deny that his name has helped us recognize him, but you're making the assumption that his name is the only reason many of us would accept him, which is a large jump and, at least in most cases, untrue.

His last name is obviously a significant factor and I don't have a problem admitting that. However, he could have some potential and signing him would require almost no risk whatsoever, so I say go for it. I wouldn't want to watch him succeed elsewhere knowing that we passed up a chance to sign him for very little.

I agree there's little risk in signing him, provided it doesn't necessarily alter draft strategy (meaning, I don't want Rick to think we'll have the WR issue "solved" with Duron Carter and, therefore bypasses on a guy they have highly ranked on their board). Remember, the Vikings brought in Carter once before and didn't make him an offer (neither did any NFL team). I think they'd sign him based on his ability and potential vs. his last name. But it never hurts to come from a good pedigree.

There was one thing that Duron said. Now, I can't find the exact quote at the moment but I will try. It went something like this. "I used to think my dad was full of crap talking about what I had to do to play football. Now I know he knows what he is talking about and I listen to him." That was the concept of his statement. To me, that sounds like a kid who has realized that he has to listen and work in order to play football.

His dad is kinda full of crap sometimes.

But I agree with the thought that he probably 'gets it' now.

Pretty compelling article. I really want him in purple and will root for him wherever he lands. Hope he can get bulked up and get off the line better.

thanks for the link, Mel.

I have 2 different outlooks at this. 1) I don't think you really lose anything by signing him to a one year "prove it" deal. Heck, even if he doesn't even make it through training camp the only thing you've lost is the 100k signing bonus, which by all accounts is pocket change in the NFL. But, having said that, if we end up keeping Jennings, then I would assume the odd man out would be Thielen. Honestly I wouldn't be ready to give up on him. Sure he didn't produce much in his position, but he also wasn't on the field much either. Given time I can totally see him as a Wes Welker type. But his biggest upside is he was huge for us in ST. Regardless, if Duron end up in Purple & Gold I will cheer for him like I have for every player that has ever played for the Vikings, yes including Brett Favre ( still hate to say )

good way to look at it. signing him would make it tough to draft wr in the first three rounds as well. i'm all about competition, but at the same time teddy looked to be clicking with wright and thielan and i'd hate to see one of them go. at the end of the day it's about having 5 good receivers, so the problem of having too many good ones isn't the worse thing in the world. signing him now at age 23 is basically like getting a head start on the draft

Thielen is a stud on special teams though. Don't think he will ever be too much of a receiver but he still has value.

Thanks Mel, hadn't read this before. Makes me miss Cris Carter.

As far as Duron, I can see why he has interest in him now. If we can coach him, and he really has matured, and listened to his father, what a target he could be. If someone compares your hands when catching a ball to Cris Carter, that's about as high of praise as you can get. And man, we would have some serious speed at WR.

Duron Carter - WR - Free Agent

ESPN Vikings reporter Ben Goessling reports free agent WR Duron Carter is "down to two finalists."

We're going to guess the finalists are Minnesota and Indianapolis, although Carolina and Cleveland have also shown a lot of interest in Cris' son. Carter is expected to sign with a team by no later than next week.

I don't want to look too deep into this, but apparently Duron Carter just started following Bridgewater and Charles Johnson on twitter
