Chris Cook worked as the 49ers' starting right cornerback throughout spring practices.

Chris Culliver is coming off a torn ACL, and Eric Wright retired. Tramaine Brock will play left cornerback for San Francisco this year. A rehab project signed to a one-year, minimum contract this offseason, Cook will give Culliver his toughest competition in camp. Rookie Jimmie Ward is penned in at slot corner.

And I found this:

Chris Cook Working To Erase Bad Ball-Skills Reputation
Quarterbacks don't like watching their passes end up in the hands of a defender, but in this case McLeod Bethel-Thompson was happy to make an exception.

After the 49ers' practices this spring, cornerback Chris Cook would pull Bethel-Thompson aside and for 20 or so minutes have him put ball after ball up for grabs.

The exercise – in which Cook runs or back peddles down field and tries to locate the ball in the air – was designed to increase the cornerback's interception count...
Also...
“He’s ascending now that he’s got a good grasp and understanding of our system,” Jim Harbaugh said. “He’s showing up. He’s making plays, getting his hands on the ball, making interceptions. He’s doing a very good job.”

Or perhaps he's another OTA and minicamp Pro Bowler.

Cook had the ability to stay with receivers and I'm not sure he was often out of place. He understood the previous system quite well. But in the end, he was unable to cover receivers and had a rather startling lack of awareness when the ball was in the air. Unless he's changed his spots, that will become apparent to the 49ers on game day.

Interception count? How about increasing the number of balls he actually comes in contact with.

John Carlson "impressed the most" among the tight ends at Cardinals OTAs.

The Cardinals' website has penciled in Carlson as a starter in two-tight end packages, alongside Jake Ballard and ahead of both Rob Housler and injured rookie Troy Niklas. Carlson drew praise from both Carson Palmer and coach Bruce Arians this spring. "John has done a really, really good job," Arians said. "... He plays full speed all the time and has got outstanding hands. He's not an overwhelming blocker but he's more than adequate."

NFL suspended Vikings DE Spencer Nealy four games for violating the league's policy against performance enhancing drugs.

A second-year UDFA out of Texas A&M, Nealy finished last season on the Vikings' practice squad, and was preparing to compete for a roster spot in training camp. If the Vikings really like him, they could "stash" Nealy on the reserve/suspended list for the season's first month. Most likely, they'll cut him.

Irrelevant player.
A successful coach needs a patient wife, loyal dog, and great quarterback - and not necessarily in that order.

A player has a chance to make it on an NFL team, but decides to do drugs for the short good feeling he gets. I don't understand that way of thinking.

I'll admit that was my first reaction too, but the article said he was suspended because of testing positives for performance enhancing drugs. Given that he was an UDFA and on the practice squad, he was probably trying to give himself a "leg up" to make the regular roster. Still a dumb move, but I can at least understand the thought process that might have went with it. It's shortsighted though. Think of the future health issues that can come up by going down that path... :(

Vikings waived DE Spencer Nealy.

The move comes just about two weeks after the NFL suspended Nealy for violating its PED policy. TE Michael Higgins replaces Nealy on the roster.

And signed TE Mike Higgins: 6'5" 242lbs. Higgins spent the past three seasons with New Orleans, mostly on the practice squad.

Joe Webb is not expected to make the Panthers' 53-man roster.

Webb played the entire second half of Carolina's preseason opener, completing 16-of-28 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown. He was also a factor in the running game, adding 30 yards on four carries. Derek Anderson is locked in as Cam Newton's backup, and the Panthers are likely to keep only two quarterbacks. Webb is auditioning for a role on other teams.

On Sunday the Vikings announced that the club has signed free agent TE Kory Sperry.

A six-year NFL veteran, Sperry played the 2013 season with the Arizona Cardinals. In 40 career games, he has caught 9 passes for 152 receiving yards and one touchdown. Sperry played under Offensive Coordinator Norv Turner in San Diego from 2010-2012 and spent time on the team’s practice squad in 2009. Sperry entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Colorado State in 2009.
