King James wrote, I know, but his gametape really gave me a great impression that his bad pro day couldn't overshadow. It could be the gloves because I see ever since the pro day he has never thrown a pass without wearing gloves. But like I said, the pro day is just one day to me. I try not to buy to much into it. You have guys like Jarmarcus Russell who had great pro days but didn't show that same effort and skill in NFL games. One thing I can say about Teddy Bridgewater is that it looks like he is honestly improving. Something I never said about Ponder or T-Jack when they were starters. When Bridgewater says he has to get better, you can actually see it.
The thing I am the most exicted about is how advanced he is
in reading defenses and making good choices. To me Joe Montana
was the best at this. In fact very few QBs get successful in the NFL
without this skill . Brett Farve was one of the few who got around
it.

Nobody is "anointed", but I'd be very surprised if Cassel doesn't remain the odds-on favorite to be the Vikings' starter in week one.

I feel almost the exact opposite.Eli wrote:Nobody is "anointed", but I'd be very surprised if Cassel doesn't remain the odds-on favorite to be the Vikings' starter in week one.
I cant fathom why anyone would think Bridgewater won't beat out Cassel, like, everyone here realizes that Cassel is awful and only looked decent last year because we are used to seeing Ponder, right?
Bridgewater is already a bigger threat than Cassel, I suppose anything could happen but I think people don't truly see how mediocre Cassel was last year.

Not only mediocre but sometimes terrible. But almost everyone here seems to feel that he will be the starter week one but I say TB will be or should be.Purpnation wrote: I feel almost the exact opposite.

I'm with you man, I think alot of it has to do with the success we have had with old 'washed up' QBs, compared to the success (Or lack thereof) of our drafted rookie QBs.Purple bruise wrote: Not only mediocre but sometimes terrible. We shall see what the future holds but I want TB in there from the git-go. If he sucks then it is simple and wise to call in a reliever.

Eh... it seems to me he fits in pretty well with that bunch but since Bridgewater hasn't played a down yet, I certainly don't think he can be considered a bigger threat than Cassel yet.808vikingsfan wrote:We're used to seeing Ponder, TJ, McNabb, Webb, Holcomb, Bollinger, Frerotte, and an old Brad Johnson. Links to prove an opinion?808vikingsfan wrote: We're used to seeing Ponder, TJ, McNabb, Webb, Holcomb, Bollinger, Frerotte, and an old Brad Johnson. Can't blame anyone for getting excited about Cassel. Links to backup this statement please.
I think the chances of TB being better than Cassel are pretty great, in fact, if he is anything above bad, he would be considered a better QB. You are aware that Cassel is awful right? I know its hard to tell having the luck we have had with QBs, but jeez. The guy is a below average starter at best.
I suppose Bridgewater could end up being the lesser QB this year, but unless Cassel dramatically improves, all Teddy will need to be to eclipse Cassel is average.
Re: Don't bet your last dollar that Cassel is the anointed o
Yeah, Cassell is the best of the lousiest.808vikingsfan wrote: Holcomb? Bollinger? At your feet Mcnabb? Really? I'd take Cassel any day of the year over our previous starters from the last decade.
Bridgewater is likely better than all of them, Cassell included, right now. But since he's a rookie who knows how Turner and Zimmer will look at it. They're both pretty old school.

Give it some time, he's still learning the playbook after all. And I don't really think you can make a fair analysis based off of the "Underwear olympics." OTAs don't mean ####, when the pads come on is what matters.
Like I said, all TB has to do to eclipse Cassel is play better than slightly below mediocre.

I do believe Bridgewater is the better QB. When have you ever heard of Cassel or Ponder being able to read defenses well and making corrections at the pre-snap? When have you ever heard of Cassel or Ponder being able to release the ball quickly? When have you heard about how good Cassel or Ponder was at taking care of the ball? NEVER...
As someone said earlier, the only reason I can see Bridgewater get benched is because he's a rookie.

I was thinking maybe you sit him because we're going to be playing at TCF, possibly in the snow, and that he could lose some confidence being a fumble liability with his small hands. Gloves don't help as much when the ball is wet, so maybe you sit him for 2 years and let Cassel play.King James wrote:I do believe Bridgewater is the better QB. Cassel is decent at reading through his progressions and stuff, he's a disciplined QB. His problem is that he just doesn't have that great an arm, and his accuracy is absolutely terrible beyond 15 yards. I know everyone talks about how Bridgewater has bad accuracy going deep, but it simply isn't true. It's usually a timing issue with him, he throws it on target but it's a little ahead of his receiver. With Cassel, it's just accuracy. He'll throw it behind, to the left, to the right. He's very shaky. What he's good at are those short passes, which actually suits this offense because we have a lot of guys who are good are creating yards after the catch. He should be fine, and this is going to be AP's offense anyways so it shouldn't really matter that much.

Are all the QBs on that list perfectly equal to each other?808vikingsfan wrote: Holcomb? Bollinger? At your feet Mcnabb? Really? I'd take Cassel any day of the year over our previous starters from the last decade.
I'd take Cassel over most of them but being one of the best of that bunch doesn't change my view of him as a mediocre, stopgap QB. If the list is "Vikings QBs over the past decade that weren't worth being excited about" then I'd put Cassel on that list with the rest of them. I'm certainly not excited about him being the Vikings QB. Maybe he'll deliver a great season for the Vikes and if he does, I'll commend him for it but right now, I view him as another in the parade of mediocre-to-bad Vikings QBs who probably won't even start for a full season.

Kain Colter is great. Loved him at Northwestern. Underdog story I'm rooting for.
Cassel is a rhythym quarterback. Gets in grooves, both good and bad. If he's your starting quarterback you have to take the good with bad. Teddy is pegged to be everything, but reliant on grooves. He's efficient. His great is really only very good and his bad is still pretty good (as in, not going to cost you a game).
