Floyd drops 25 pounds to compete for starting role

"I changed a lot of things this offseason,'' he said after the event. "I stopped eating meat. I started eating just seafood and really focusing on my diet, and everything leads into what I do on Sunday. (Giving up meat was) really hard. I lived off pork. I thought pork made the world go around.

"That was just me (making the decision). Do I want to keep putting this stuff in my body or do I want to get right? So I decided to give up things that I love that are not really good for me right now. My body feels great. I've been telling people my body hasn't felt this way since I first started playing football.''

To me that is what is different with
Our new coaching staff. Zimmer expects
the best from his players. I know they
liked Frazier but I think a lot of guys felt
they could go through the motions and
keep their jobs.

I don't see what this has to do with Zimmer at all. Floyd wasn't handed a starting job last year and it looks like he won't just be handed a starting job this year. It sounds like this change he made was self-motivated, not Zimmer-motivated.

He's down 25 lbs to 305?? What did he play at last season? He was only 297 at the combine not much more than a year ago.

Playing weight last year was 305 from what I can tell. Maybe he gained weight over the course of the season.

From the article:
He was an appropriate choice because Floyd has made a concerted effort to improve his diet from when he said he used to put "extra bacon on everything.''
That's not exactly a healthy decision.
Floyd spent three weeks of his offseason working out and lifting weights at Florida, where he played his college ball, and another three weeks under the tutelage of a trainer in his native Philadelphia. Then he returned to Minnesota to work with the Vikings' strength staff.
Hopefully it helps him take the next step and can be a terror.

I just went back and read a couple of draft profiles on Floyd. I actually found the description of "raw" to be reassuring. Hopefully he'll be less raw this year.

Hopefully he'll turn in to a cross between Alan Page and Keith Millard. I was never a Randle fan.

WHAT Randle was the man .. i know he was loud mouthed but I think he had reason to be .. not drafted and critized
for his size by the league.. Randle was one of the main reasons I became a Vikings fan(god help me). Its is funny
one of the same reasons I loved Randle; I hate Deion Sanders for. I thought Deion was mouth was arrogance and
Randle's mouth was confidence and of need to resolute in his drive to be the best. :smilevike: :smilevike:

This doesn't sound so much like a catalyst for improved play next year as it sounds more like we might have dodged a bullet. If he was overweight and lost 25 pounds to get back to 305 obviously that's not bad and he DID make the change / commitment to do so but it's concerning he let himself go over the offseason. Hopefully this is him realizing you have to work hard at all times, even in the offseason rather than slacking off when their isn't football.

Naw, Randles mouth was him motivating himself and intimidating the opponents. It was a tool. The difference between Deion and Randle is once he was off the field, Randle didn't talk as much trash. Deion was talking trash from the end of the game on Sunday, to the begining of the game the next Sunday.

Interesting. I have never heard of a Viking fan not liking John Randle. Most put him in the top 5 as far as personality and performance.

Its good to see Floyd has the motivation to loose the weight. Now put on some muscle and I think he will go far. Little tid bits like this are nice cause draft day is coming up so SLOWWWWWWWWWWW.
