Ponder is most certainly not the standard. I was replying to someone's comment asking if we'd think Ponder was worthy of a third round pick if we'd never seen him as more than a backup. The answer was no. The rationale for Mallett being worth it, is IMO Mallett is a more talented player. Sorry for any confusion..

I don't think anyone's basing their beliefs on Mallet on the fact that he's a backup. It's rare that a backup goes on to be successful with other teams though. Look at the history of teams trading high picks or offering huge contracts to guys who have backed up great QBs (and in most cases even shown some potential in a few games).
Matt Cassel
Kevin Kolb
Matt Flynn
Charlie Whitehurst
AJ Feeley
Matt Schaub
That's a pretty ugly list if you ask me. Schaub is the only guy who's found sustained success in the team that signed him.
So ya, guys like Rodgers and Steve Young come around from time to time. But when they do, the team holds onto them and in both cases, actually pushed the all time great veteran QB out the door. If Belichick is willing to part ways with Mallett, I would seriously question how good he really is.
Oh and I don't understand this love for Kirk Cousins. Dude has been average at best in relief of RG3. Look at what he did this year....
52% completion percentage, 4 TDs 7 INTs 3 Fumbles and a whopping QB rating of 58.4
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Mallett will be good because he is backing up a HOF QB, or even that he will be good at all. I don't know, and frankly I don't care.
I am saying, however, that writing him off and claiming he is not that good simply because he is not the starting QB is ridiculous, especially considering the QB he is backing up is a HOFer.

I agree, but I'm not sure that anyone is making that claim on that judgement alone.
I was replying mainly to the " Back up QBs are not that good or they would not be backups." comment made by Purple Bruise. Which in my mind, is a ridiculous claim to make, especially when your drafted by a team with Tom Brady.
The only reason Mallett is a back-up is because of the QB who is currently in front of him. Mallett is a great QB from what I seen in his preseason highlights. He has an arm, pocket presence, and goes through his progressions if the 1st read isn't available. If we trade for anybody, it needs to be for Ryan Mallet.
I would rather trade for him so we can draft a defensive player in the 1st and 2nd rounds.

No one thought Rodgers was going to turn out to be anything, did anybody think Brady was going to do what he has done when he was backing up Drew Bledsoe? Im not saying we should get Mallett, but I an saying that claiming that a back up QB must not be that good simply because he is a back up (When there is a HOF QB in front of him, I might add.) is EXTREMELY idiotic. Nick Foles was a back up, is he not that good? Thought so.
Mallett could be the best QB ever to live, who knows? We won't see until he is on the field, but to claim that there is no chance of a player being good, simply because he is backing up another QB (Who, once again, is a HOFer.) take a level of sheer stupidity that I simply cannot comprehend.
Another outlandish statement "No ONE thought that Rodgers would turn out to be anything". Do you just make this stuff up
Do not mistake KINDNESS for WEAKNESS!
Best to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool rather than open it and remove all doubt.

Wow now he is a great QB Holy crap

No one wanted him until the Patriots took him late in the 3rd round. He has played in one regular season game, with a very good Patriots team threw 4 passes had one completion and one interception. His professional QB rating is 5.2 yes five point two. So I am confused why you say that he is a great quarterback.

Calling any statement made by anybody "outlandish", after previously saying that back up QBs can't be good if they are back ups (Even considering those on teams with HOF QBs) is quite silly.
