If Manziel and Bridgewater are gone: Anthony Barr from UCLA could be the real deal if we're going 3-4. Could be an Aldon Smith type

I would be thrilled if he were there at 8.

I think Barr or Nix will be there and I would take either.

I think you have to get a QB no matter what. That being said, you have to be 5 or higher I think to get a top shelf QB. My first desire would be to trade into the #4 spot and draft Bortels. Guy reminds me of Ben Rothlisberger when I see him play. I love Bridgewater but I think he is gone first overall, although Bortels may surprise as he outplayed Bridgewater in their head to head meeting this year. If we stay at 8 I think we get Johnny Football. If they are all gone there is a very real possibility that Clowney falls to us much like Perterson did at #7 a few years back. If they are all gone than we draft the best man cover CB or NT we can find or trade back for more picks.

If Bridgewater or Manziel isn't available we should draft another position and get AJ McCarron in the 2nd round. Please don't reach on Bortles or Carr. McCarron can be that next franchise QB we need. He is very underrated.

I agree with this line of thinking and I'd also add that I would take Mettenberger in the 2nd as well.

Talk about a reach in the second round for McCarron :nono: That would be as bad as taking Tarvaris Jackson in the second round. To me McCararron is another "product of the system". A Barkley, Leinhart type of player. Maybe in the 5th or 6th round but a 2nd round pick (which for the Vikings is the 40th player taken in the draft). No thanks.

I think if Rickie doesn't have his eye on Teddy, we should trade down, try and get Nix, then get one of the ACL Qbs later. I prefer Zach over Murry, but I really like both. Zach has a huge arm, and sitting out while his ACL heals, should give him time to work on his game.

I'm also cool with this line of thinking, but I would have to say, I think it would be a huge reach to take McCarron or Mettenberger with the 8th pick in the 2nd round.

^I agree to an extent. However, I feel like if you really like a QB, you can't wait and hope he's still around for you next round and keep pressing the envelope. 3rd is probably where they should go, so 2nd round is where they might have to take them.

Do you know how many teams really wanted to take Russell Wilson? They felt he'd slip to the 5th or 6th round, but Seattle wasn't playing that game and proved they really wanted him by taking him where EVERYONE was saying it was a reach. The Kipers, Mayock's and McShay's hated on that pick in the 3rd round, but now they all look dumb and teams without a franchise Q are kicking themselves.

For sure, I agree you like a quarterback, you go get him. I guess for me, I am just referring to the quality of those two players. Mettenberger I could get maybe get excited about, but I wouldn't want McCarron at all. I just don't see either of them as franchise quarterbacks. I think Russ Wilson was a much more polished prospect. The only true knock on him was his height, these two both have a lot more red flags.

I think that approach is how we ended up with Christian Ponder. A guy that the Vikings seem to have wanted after Locker and Gabbert were taking off the boards. I'm not saying that approach is wrong but in can either break you like us or make you like Seattle.

While everyone is dry-humping Manziel, here is something different to read. Maybe more viable options are out there enabling us to draft some much needed D early.

Don't hate on my Buckeyes. Some of the best Vikings went to Ohio State.

After reading that article there is no doubt that Aaron Murray has a better career than McCarron. I think many draft boards had him going in the first round until he got injured. Definitely a guy I would want the Vikings to pick up if available in the later rounds.

I like McCarron because he is a leader. Put a decent group of talent around him and he will do damage. I think he would do pretty good with our offense. My only issue is our O-line because he had a LOT of time to throw with Alabama. Still, I think we have a good group of WR, TE, and a beast of a RB he can manage with.
