Duh!!!
I guess you have to bench both your runningbacks before you realize that you have to throw to win in this league. When was the last time a Vikings QB threw for 382 yards? The thing is with passing stats like that it would make Peterson even better. How stupid are the Vikings coaching staff?

They're still learning, Frazier will probably never figure it out though, the point is you don't score 48 points with your running back onlyBoon wrote: They still ran the ball 30 + times

I knew it had been a while since the vikings scored that many points. Not since 1998.

Re: Duh!!!
No Kidding, Convince teams that WE WILL throw the ball then realize the Lanes AD will have to run in. That's Why I wanted Cassel in there since the Pittsburgh Game. This team with some decent Defensive Drafts and FA moves could be very scary in the right hands. Right now I don't see that Frasier has the mental material between his ears to harness it and use it. Anybody who would prefer Ponder at QB over cassel makes me shake my head. Ponder is a NFL Bottom Feeder QB. Horrible. He hasn't shown any development since his first season. Cassel isn't great but he doesn't SUCK and he can throw the ball down the field and ATTACK Defensives HEAD ON. We have got to rid our offense of this CONSTANT West Coast, 5 yard slant, Up the Middle run, Throw short of the first down marker, Play not to lose conservative BS and Play to win the Freaking game with a KILLER Instinct. All this Childress Philosophy needs to go.

Re: Duh!!!
The Vikings usually don't pass, not until 3rd down, and most of there passes are five yards or so, they hardly ever go deep. AD is way overused, hence he's hurt, because teams play 8 and even 9 in the box cause they know we ain't a passing team. There have been other teams with weak secondaries that the Vikes haven't taken advantage of.fiestavike wrote: Correct, the big difference was gouging the eagles secondary on the deep/intermediate routes.
I think this is a classic case of fans confusing results and gameplans...we passed effectively so suddenly we must have been trying to pass, when in previous games, obviously we weren't?
Re: Duh!!!
Plus, when your defense is getting stops against an offense that isn't using much clock at all and your offense sustains drives, you end up running a LOT of plays and putting up some big numbers. It's the risk Chip Kelly runs with his approach.fiestavike wrote:Correct, the big difference was gouging the eagles secondary on the deep/intermediate routes.
Exactly. Everything looks better when the execution is actually there.I think this is a classic case of fans confusing results and gameplans...we passed effectively so suddenly we must have been trying to pass, when in previous games, obviously we weren't?
Re: Duh!!!
They didn't even attempt downfield passes for the first ten or twelve games of the season and the only reason we did today is because the top two running backs forced a more vertical passing game and your right executing is the key thing but it involves playing the players that can execute better and thats where this present coaching staff has failed miserably , there is no way someone watching the team with Cassel at QB cannot see he is a major upgrade even AD said after The sStealers game "what do you think " when asked who should start . I just hope we get a complete turnover from the Childress era holdovers its time to join the modern NFL and thats passing and playing a lot of tight coverage and blitzing .Mothman wrote: Plus, when your defense is getting stops against an offense that isn't using much clock at all and your offense sustains drives, you end up running a LOT of plays and putting up some big numbers. Re: Duh!!!
as far as how many times they ran the ball, you have to factor in that they only punted twice the whole game....which means they ran more plays.
i didn't read the second half of posts on this thread.....but the biggest difference to me was the defensive looks we were getting as a result of no AD.
i think the biggest issue this team has had is learning to make teams pay for the way they stack the line against us. the o-line is quite often overmatched by this.
we also seem to have trouble getting away from being predictable when AD is on the field.
we scored 48 points today without him on the field....i think people need to let that sink in some and try to come up with a different rationale than, Matt Cassel is awesome.
we have really gifted receivers..... and Cassel played great. but i saw a heck of alot more imagination in the play calling today, mixed in with a much easier time for the o-line
you can't make a running back the focal point of your offense week in week out.... as proven by the 2013 vikings

This is one of those misleading stats.Boon wrote:

When you pass the ball with passing formations and pick up first downs, it gives you more and more chances to also run the ball. If you dedicate 2 of your 3 plays before you have to punt to running the ball, you can get the same inflated carry counts, but the offense will be extremely ineffective and then your passing stats will suffer. This is why we're normally lucky to break 200 yards passing in a game.

No, everything works better with a QB that knows what he is doing. And an INCOMPETANT HC finally benches the the dunce QB, hopefully for good. So much for needing an IQ to play football.Mothman wrote: Plus, when your defense is getting stops against an offense that isn't using much clock at all and your offense sustains drives, you end up running a LOT of plays and putting up some big numbers. Yes, it's amazing how much better our offense looks when we spread it out a bit and try to throw it. This game reminded me of the Washington game except the Eagles never have the ball for more than 2 minutes so we just kept on scoring. It's almost like having AD is handicapping us because it limits what our coaching staff is going to do. Then again, maybe I'm just overreacting to one game.

We played better last year after Harvin went out also.
Re: Duh!!!
Although we won, I feel this can reflect poorly on Frazier and staff.
Re: Duh!!!
Yep you guys are both right on. If AD plays this game I have no doubt we would have lost. As soon as we got a lead Musgrave would have tried to milk the clock with Peterson and make us one dimensional and easy to defend so when philly went on that 2 TD run to close the gap we would have continued to lose momentum and the score wouldn't have ended in our favor.im4mnvikes wrote:

What's the best Vikings offense in recent years? 2009 with Favre at quarterback. What was AP's role on that team? Rush for 1,300 yards, catch 40-45 passes and be a constant home-run threat. NOT to carry the ball 35 times a game.
As much as I love watching AP -- he's the most exciting Vikings player I've ever seen -- the coaches seem to have fallen so much in love with feeding him the rock that they've missed the boat on what could have been a pretty good passing attack. Cassel is just fine at QB, and our receivers are all playing their butts off with him at QB. We discovered practically by accident that John Carlson is a huge asset, and none of this even considers Kyle Rudolph.
By hitching their wagon to Christian Ponder and trying to cover it up with superhuman exploits from AP (and claiming "the Vikings are built on the run"), this coaching staff has missed what could have been an area of strength -- and in my opinion torpedoed the season.
