Better question: why give Ponder and the coaching staff any hope that he's the franchise QB?

Because watching the team lose is zero fun. And there is zero guarantee that a top 3 draft pick is going to be any better than a top 20. I'll take wins right up to the end. If we had to tank one or two games at the end of the season I'd go along with it but not at midseason.
