Top 5 Viking QBs (not including Fran)
Just curious who you think are the top 5 QBs not including Fran. He would be the obvious #1. So I'll go first.
1. Tommy Kramer
2. Brad Johnson
3. Joe Kappa
4. Dante Culpepper
5. Wade Willson
There you have it. I know Joe Kapp's stats aren't great but that Guy knew how to win football games. I have a feeling if he would have stayed the next year after the Superbowl loss to KC the Vikings would have a Superbowl trophy.

1. Cunningham
2. Culpepper
3. Wade Wilson
4. Kapp
5. Kramer
Cunningham was one of my favorite all time players, so even had he not ever thrown a pass as a Viking, he would have been on the list somewhere

The Devil whispered in the Viking's ear, "There's a storm coming." The Viking replied, "I am the storm." #SKOL2018

Wade Wilson? Might as well put Sean Salisbury.
Is there any criteria as far as minimum seasons played? Because Favre would hands down be my number 1. HOF, all-time great and one of is best statistical seasons in a Vikings uniform.
1. Favre
2. Kramer
3. Culpepper
4. Cunningham
5. Moon
Biased towards my age. Also not going to include Gannon or Johnson who played for Minny, but didn't breakout until later on another team.

Farve was almost on my list and you have no argument from me as to why he should be on the list. His stats for two years for the Vikes out shined quite a few others who actually played longer for us. I guess my thoughts went to the people who played a little longer than two years.
As far as Wilson is concerned he really played very well for us had a decent record in an era where we were really lacking in talent. And he did have that great game against San Francisco in the playoffs. I even think he may have had a better win/loss record than Kramer.

The lists are sobering. A franchise that has played 52 seasons and that's it? Franchise quarterbacks don't grow on trees, Virginia.
I'm afraid there's no way I could justifiably name five. I'll give you two:
1. Tommy Kramer
2. Daunte Culpepper
As far as home-grown products goes, Tommy Kramer and Daunte Culpepper leave everyone else behind. Both had the potential to be HoF QBs, but Kramer could never rid himself of his personal demons and Culpepper's devastating injury coupled with his hugely inflated ego did him in.
Warren Moon was obviously a great QB, but his three years in Minnesota were well past his prime.
Randall Cunningham played just one good season for the Vikings.
Brett Favre had one great season and then a disastrous one. And again, at the very tail end of his career.
If I were to add a third, it would be Joe Kapp, who helped bring the team from 3 wins to a 12 win season and a Super Bowl appearance in just three seasons. But in the end, he had just two winning seasons with the franchise, so it's tough to justify naming him.

Re: Top 5 Viking QBs (not including Fran)
I pretty much agree. The trouble with Cunningham and Favre is that they had one great season each and that was that. Kapp played more seasons as a starter than they did and he was a fierce competitor but only one season was truly good. Maybe I'm wrong about Kapp, I don't know.Eli wrote:The lists are sobering. Kramer and Culpepper put in good multiple years for the Vikings. I wish their careers hadn't been cut short.
Regarding Culpepper's state of mind, interestingly enough Cris Carter claims Daunte did not have a big ego. In fact, Carter said that Pep was easily the most "insecure player" he ever met. Perhaps that explains some of Daunte's weird behavior.

Point of fact. In that time period, Green Bay has drafted one franchise QB. So, no, they don't grow on trees.Eli wrote:The lists are sobering. A franchise that has played 52 seasons and that's it? Franchise quarterbacks don't grow on trees, Virginia.
Vikings fan since Nov. 6, 1966. Annoying Packer fans since Nov. 7, 1966
Re: Top 5 Viking QBs (not including Fran)
Bart Starr and Aaron Rodgers would make at least two, but I'm not that familiar with Packers history. You could certainly add Brett Favre to their list of franchise QBs, even though they didn't draft him.Raptorman wrote: Point of fact. In that time period, Green Bay has drafted one franchise QB. Edit: To be accurate, Bart Starr was drafted in 1956, so wasn't drafted during the time period that the Vikings franchise has been in existence.

I found the wikipedia article on starting Vikings QB's to be interesting here. At least it reminded me of some QB's who have been starters over the years. Only a few are completely regrettable (e.g. Spergon Wynn and a few others) and only a few really shine as this thread has revelealed.

That's even more sobering. I hadn't realized that the Minnesota Vikings have won just six playoff games since 1989.
Re: Top 5 Viking QBs (not including Fran)
The main reason this organization doesn't have any Super Bowl victories is because of the many listed names above. The majority of Super Bowl winners had stability at quarterback. The only two guys to play quarterback for this team for more then just a few years were Tarkenton and Kramer. Kramer took over in 1979 and was the beneficiary of an older team on the decline. The offense was good but the Purple People Eaters were gone. The Walker trade damaged the team in the early '90's and Denny Green never believed in quarterback continuity. Green had Gannon, Wilson, Salsbury, Mcmahon, Moon, Johnson, Cunningham, George, Culpepper. The list goes on. They are trying to get it right with Ponder. Let's hope they do..
Re: Top 5 Viking QBs (not including Fran)
Sadly, that's true. They reached a lot of playoff games during the Green era but they didn't win many of them. The Vikes won a single playoff game in each of these seasons: '97, '98, '99, '00, '04, '09Eli wrote:

Hopefully, they'll add 3 (or 4, if necessary) more to that list this season.
