i have nothing else to add. except i'm baffled that red mccombs isn't in the pro football hall of fame yet...

Haha! I agree, this thread has been remarkable.

It is telling that a thread about the Wilfs has revolved so much around Childress. I think that as time goes on they will remembered less for that blunder and more for the positive momentum that they have been bringing to this franchise recently. Honestly, I believe the only reason the Wilf's hired Childress is because he represented a 180 degree change from Tice and the loveboat. Childress promised to run a tight ship and the Wilfs liked that and his shortcomings as a coach were overlooked.

And before I forget to give credit where it is due: Mondry, that was an epic post!

If I remember correctly, people were calling for Childress' head after the 2008 season. I can't remember correctly but there were reports of Childress potentially getting fired or just letting him finish the remainder of his contract. I don't know which situation he was in. What I do know is that Childress got that contract extension because he managed to sweet talk Favre into playing with us. That offseason it seem like he was putting all the chips on the table and it was basically all or nothing. I think Childress knew that the "end" was near though. He wouldn't pursue Favre the way he did if he knew his job wasn't in jeopardy.

I'll also admit. Im and somewhat happy that Favre didnt get us a super bowl now that I look back at it because in my mind he will always be a Packer. But I did want us to win go all the way because I made a bet that we were going to win the NFC championship game. I lost $100.

i'm sorry, the guy was an idiot. frazier is already a better coach than childress ever was, which is why you'll never see childress as a head coach in the nfl again.
That game was so poorly managed it was obvious to us in the game thread at the time what was going to happen. We actually had enough time to post it and draw the conclusion before Childress punted the game away. Thank you, Moss for your "best play ever" (getting Childress fired) while with the Vikings.... :v):

I think Chili got himself fired. Moss just proved to be an effective catalyst. :)

Ugh... that punt... I try to forget it but it was one of the most aggravating coaching choices i've ever seen from a Vikings HC (although nothing will ever match "The Knee").

Too easy. And if lack of talent was the true issue, they wouldn't have been up by 17 and 20 back to back at halftime...I assure you that. You don't dominate in one half and do NOTHING in the second half because of talent. DID THE "LACK OF TALENT" STAY IN THE LOCKER ROOM OR SOMETHING?!?! ;) It's because of the adjustments made at halftime by the other coach/team and Frazier and the Vikes failing to answer those with their own.

... and even though that comment was written about something else, it seems a good note on which to end our discussion about the 2011 team. We're clearly not going to see eye to eye on them or Brad Childress but it was a fun discussion. Thanks.

True, although I think the Moss firing got Chili his walking papers a little faster :smilevike:

Agreed :steamed: Denny Green invented the "prevent offense" on that play....

Owners can screw up a team, and over the course of many years. Thw Wilf's have been mostly positive, and that's all good. We may be lucky with this one.
A successful coach needs a patient wife, loyal dog, and great quarterback - and not necessarily in that order.
