Sharrif Floyd - DL - Vikings

After speaking with scouts, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport couldn't find "one reason" why DT Sharrif Floyd fell to the Vikings at No. 23.

"He just kinda did," was Rapoport's finding. "So many like him as a player."

Floyd was mocked as high as the Raiders at No. 3, but was viewed as a poor fit for 3-4 defenses. His lack of college production likely worked against him, as well. Floyd will be eased in behind veteran Kevin Williams as a rookie.

When it comes to Floyd, I guess I'm just not worried about him falling to #23. I've seen this guy play for the Gators and he's a formidable DT.

Besides, who cares why Floyd dropped? The Vikings got him and I'm really happy about that.

Their loss is our gain. Shariff will be a monster for us. I cannot wait for this guy to tear it up... even though it will cost my second favorite Viking of all time his job in the end. :?

Ditto.

I doubt there's any great mystery or single answer as to why he dropped. It's likely just a combination of things that proved to be potentially good fortune for the Vikings. Some teams undoubtedly had other needs they wanted to address or other players they liked more and as mentioned above, some probably felt he wasn't the right fit for their scheme. His fall in R1 doesn't necessarily reflect on his abilities or his character. It's just how the draft played out. It's always unpredictable and there are always surprises.

True, I wonder though, once he got past the raiders at 12 if other teams kinda went "huuuuuuuuuh?" and got scared, especially as he kept falling. I know as a fan I was thinking, wow, there must really be something up with this guy, but I don't know what it is, so it must be something bad. Maybe some GM's were like "I'm not gonna be the dummy outside the loop to take this guy." hahah. One can only guess.

I doubt it. If previous history is any indication, the Raiders aren't the best judge of talent. Even in a post Al Davis era, it's hard to imagine a team second-guessing their own scouting/talent evaluators and board.

That's the point, if a guy falls to the raiders and even they're passing him up!

And here I just thought you were a Hawks fan all this time. They're looking scary good this year, but the NHL playoffs can be so unpredictable.

I heard it was short arms.

Seriously, Floyd's arms are shorter than average for his position, which in turn probably led some evaluators to be concerned that his arm length would allow interior offensive players to get their hands on him and control him before he could get into them and defeat their blocks. Apparently the hand fights that go on in the interior are that important, although watching tape of Floyd it's hard for me to believe offensive interior blockers will have that luxury. The guy is so quick and powerful that he seems to control most of his encounters with blockers rather than the other way around and most guys seem to be satisfied with just steering him out of the play if they can.

The video I saw on Floyd does nothing to alter my belief the guy was the top DT. Richardson and Lotuleilei were up there as well, but Floyd looks like the better disruptor of the three and I think he'll carry that into the pros, especially if he can continue to get stronger and maybe a little bigger.

I wish Big Pat would stick around and coach this kid up. I can see REEF being just like P will. I thought I read somewhere that they were asking Pat to help coach the d line. Hope it's just not a rumor.

Not to derail this topic, but yes I am a huge Hawks fan for obvious reasons. They definitely have a strong chance to win it all this year, but as you said, in the NHL you never know. I'm not even sure the last time a #1 seed even won the cup. Usually comes down to goaltending, which certainly worries me even though Crawford and Emery have played lights out this year.

I would love to have another cup celebration though!
