Cosell was on the Dan Patrick show this morning and was asked what he thought about the Patterson pick. Cosell said he thought that Hunter was the better reciever and should have been taken. Made some comparisons size wise to AJ Green for Hunter.

I think Patterson is one of those picks that could be fantastic or terrible. No middle ground.

There is middle ground! Even if he doesn't cut it as a WR, he should help in the return game. Very hard to see a complete bust here.

From what I have seen and read I think that I will be shocked if he does not excel as a receiver and in fact is exactly what the Vikes needed to stretch the field and come down with "jump" balls. He reminds me a lot of Sidney Rice only with better speed and moves.

Well obviously we all want him to be a good WR, and expect that. But even if this doesn't happen, he brings more to the table than toothpick leg TWill. He could be a great returner, and although you want more than that from a 1st round pick, especially one you traded several picks for, there is a sorta security net with the special teams aspect.

I fail to see how this explanation of what the Vikings gave up "doesn't look as bad". Forget #229. They gave up #83 and #102 to move up 23 spots and grab a guy that nobody else was very confident in. He'd have gone early in the 2nd round, for sure, but that's a lot to pay for a giant question mark.

Patterson is risky just like adrian Peterson was. fantastic athlete, big, playmaker. huge upside. he could possibly be the next larry fitzgerald or andre johnson. tavon Austin is much more risky.

Am I the only one who thinks that the Vikings drafting a guy in the first whose name starts with "P" and ends with "terson" is a good omen?

I watched a highlight reel on ESPN about Patterson and I'm starting to warm up to this kid. His strengths really seem to be avoiding tackles and YAC. He’s actually incredible at it. Great instincts. Granted these were against college defenses, but he still seemed to have a great natural ability in the open field which you can't teach.

Bad side is I didn’t see a ton of catches, and the ones he did make that looked good seemed to be from subpar coverage. While I don’t see great speed, he seems like a fantastic return guy and just has great instincts on where to run and making guys miss. And here’s the biggest thing. The majority of his highlights seemed to entail getting a short pass, or being handed the ball and then running around the field for 20 minutes for a big gain. The reason I’m intrigued by this is he might be the perfect WR for the Vikings because of this talent. Not to bash Ponder, but a lot of his passes are 0-10 yards away from him, and Patterson appears to be the type who turns those short passes into yardage. The only caveat to that is it only seems to happen in the open field, and I’m not seeing enough evidence that he can fight for that ball when he’s covered or has great leaping ability or long bomb catching ability in general. But with Greg Jennings here and Jarius Wright showing great ability to catch the bombs, we might not need him for that. But what he is good at, might really help the Viking offense more than it might other teams.

He doesn't have crazy top end speed, it's how fast he accelerates that's amazing.

Patterson has very impressive sustained speed. But I do agree that his acceleration is off the charts.

Thanks for the link, DP. This is really a good video because it shows Patterson on the field but also some of the catches he made during the combine drills.
