I wouldn't say he has nothing left to give on the field. There may be some gas left in his tank but I don't think Urlacher is still a good fit for a defense that requires him to do as much running as the Bears and Vikings defenses do. He might be able to help a team out in a different or limited role but he shouldn't be starting at MLB in a Tampa 2 defense anymore.GBFavreFan wrote: This post sounds like deja vu when the Vikings signed Donovan McNabb in 2011. You can't base your expectations for a player based on things from 3-5 years ago like Viking fans did with McNabb. Viking fans ignored Andy Reid, the Eagles fans, Mike Shanahan and the Redskins fans, who all said McNabb is washed up and I had to listen to Viking fans talk about a playoff run since McNabb was in the Pro Bowl, Super Bowl, blah, blah blah. I don't follow Urlacher at all, but when Bears fans say he's a shell of his former shelf, and no one protests Urlacher not being re-signed other than for sentimentality, I listen to them. There would be no point to going after Brian Urlacher other than to look like a laughing stock to the rest of the NFL. We've gained some major credibility around the league with our franchise since last December up through the signing of Jennings. Let's not blow it by going after someone in Al Davis fashion, since Urlacher has nothing left to give on the field.

You're welcome, but your sarcasm in calling me professor suggests you missed the more important lesson. You know, the one about simmering down?MV711 wrote: Thanks for the grammar lesson Professor VikingHoard...

I don't think I'd be able to make myself simmer down enough to get a burger there.MelanieMFunk wrote: Simmer down? Like this? ----> http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/ ... le/n11334/

MV711,
I just realized you are somewhat new to the board. Seriously, no one meant to be a jerk. The "petigree" mistake just stood out and I couldn't keep myself from doing my day job! Sorry.
Welcome to the board. It's a good one, with really sharp posters and a good bunch of guys (and gals, welcome to you too Melanie
). I won't point out any more spelling or grammar issues, I promise. If there's a mistake and context doesn't make it obvious I might ask you to clarify, but other than that no worries.
Now, just as importantly: I have to think we're about to draft our future MLB in the 1st round. Pretty sure he's a Golden Domer. (Thus, no need for Urlacher).

No problem at all Texas Vike. We're all good. Seems like there are a lot of very good posters on this site as you have stated and I'm glad I found this site to post with some of my Viking brothers and sisters. I was on a couple of other sites for years and found them to be OK except for a couple of jerks here and there who were very opinionated and acted rather childish.Texas Vike wrote:MV711,

As far as a MLB, I personally don't care who we draft, as long as he can help the Vikings D and get us to the promise land SOON. Hopefully, whoever we draft will have the same leadership traits as Urlacher.

I think urlacher has some gas left in the tank. Not sure how much we could offer or how much he wants. If he's willing to take a minimum type deal it should be a no brainer. At the very least he would be motivated twice a year vs the bears. Our priority would be still to draft a MLB with one of our first 3 picks.

Re: Urlacher
Unless Cole or our 5th round draft pick can fill the MLB position well, I say sign Urlacher up for a year. Urlacher says he hasn't felt this good in a while so perhaps he has more in the tank left then most think.
We are so weak at this position now, Urlacher couldn't be any worse than Cole or the newbee LB we drafted. Urlacher knows the system and has a ton of experience. If the price is right sign him up!!

Re: Urlacher
I don't know about just how bad Urlacher is at this stage. But what would trouble me is taking a kid like Hodges or a kid like Henderson -- outside linebackers, in other words -- and moving them inside. Square pegs usually don't fit in round holes.MV711 wrote:Unless Cole or our 5th round draft pick can fill the MLB position well, I say sign Urlacher up for a year. I like the idea of Henderson and Hodges pushing each other as they compete for the second OLB position, with Greenway being the #1 OLB. But yes, a hole would remain inside. I'm hoping that we can fill it either with Cole or a free agent stop gap. Then, next year, we can perhaps fill the position in earnest.
You can't plug every hole through the draft -- unless you want to plug them with mediocre talent. Kudos for the Vikes for passing up on the available inside linebackers if they truly thought Hodges was the qualitatively better football player. And kudos to them for not feeling trapped into bringing in a mediocre inside backer in the 5th round if they truly thought this punter was special.
