Before having a torn labrum in his left shoulder repaired a couple months ago, Jared Allen said he hadn't undergone surgery since getting his tonsils out at age 5.

It turns out the shoulder wasn't all the Minnesota Vikings' star pass rusher had fixed this time.

Allen underwent knee surgery on Jan. 31, the same day he had the shoulder repaired, two NFL sources said.

One source categorized the knee surgery as a "minor" cleanup job. The expectation remains Allen should be available to participate in the team's June minicamp.

Allen played the entire season with the shoulder injury after learning before the season he'd need surgery eventually. He also was listed on the injury report at various points with neck, groin and back issues, but any knee problems weren't revealed.

Set to turn 31 next week, Allen finished last season with 12 sacks, his sixth consecutive season in double figures. He now is coming off two surgeries as he enters the last season of a contract that includes a team-high base salary of $14,280,612 and cap number of $17,063,956.

The Vikings are not believed to have moved to restructure Allen's contract, though that still could happen before camp. Allen has played a ton of snaps in his nine-year NFL career, and concerns about wearing down may give the team pause about extending his deal to free up cap space.

Probably much ado about nothing but a veteran at his age who is raking in substantial money is always going to garner news when operated on, any niggly issues at a later date aren't worth thinking about.

I think the Vikes need to rework his contract, if Winfield was cut to make room in the salary cap, then Allen is deserving at this point for a salary cut.

I'm sure the Vikings would love to restructure his contract. However, the Winfield situation isn't the same. They were willing to cut Winfield if he wouldn't restructure because they were planning to reduce his role on the defense.

Allen has no insentive to restructure his deal.

While it is true the body is more injury prone as one ages, have you ever experienced a torn labrum? I have, and trust me, it is not fun. It just so happened that I suffered the worst kind of a labral tear (GLAD tear). The pain is tremendous, and I was dumb enough to try to play football with it back in high school a few years ago. Needless to say, I didn't last long on the field before I had to shut it down. I know what Jared Allen went through with his injury this season, so I can empathize with him.

As a side note, I have also experienced a dual lateral menisci tear in my knees as well. Again, not fun.

I truly feel sorry for the ol' man that is the ridiculously overpaid Mario Williams, who apparently suffered with an injured hand last season. Anyone else smell a rat?
