I think they were trying to help the Gophers Baseball team. I don't think it was part of the "People's Stadium" thing. I don't have a problem with them doing that.
And really, I don't know how the Gophers would be able to have a baseball team without it. Unless they build their own stadium.

Some members said the state should not be spending hundreds of millions of dollars to build a stadium for a billionaire, and for a team that is not going to move if a deal were not completed this year.

Supporters countered that the facility would be home to just 10 Vikings’ games a year, and possibly one or two in the postseason, leaving the other 350 or so days available for other events, including high school and other amateur sports, monster truck rallies and other community events. They also spoke about the estimated 13,000 construction jobs to build the facility.
Language from when it passed in May.

the vikings had such a huge home field advantage outside at the old met freezer. would love too see that again, big reason why they went to so many superbowls.

But against their divisional opponents from Detroit, Chicago and Green Bay they had no advantage due to playing outside. Today, only Detroit also plays indoors. Their home field advantage for the past 30 years has been from crowd noise in a dome with poor acoustic design.

good point. noisy stadiums like seattle, new orleans, and the metrodome are alot bigger advantage than weather nowadays. seems like denver, chicago, kc, and green bay homefields isnt a big deal like they once were. :smilevike:

Very true, the Lions had no trouble competing with the Packers at a snowy Lambeau last season, during what was a poor season.

Being able to interrupt audibles/snap counts is a much larger advantage. Out home form is so crucial and we depend on it, it it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Vikings aim to land 2018 Super Bowl
After meeting with NFL officials at the Super Bowl in New Orleans, Vikings executives came home firmly intent on landing the 2018 Super Bowl for their new stadium, which is to open in 2016 in downtown Minneapolis.

The only time Minnesota has hosted a Super Bowl was in 1992 at the Metrodome, where Washington defeated Buffalo 37-24.

"We started to do some homework on our bid," Vikings Vice President Lester Bagley said Tuesday, Feb. 6.

The Vikings already have applied to the 2018, 2019 or 2020 Super Bowl. They are pushing hard for 2018. In New Orleans, they were briefed on the second round of the application and formal presentation processes.

Competition for the 2018 extravaganza is expected to come from New Orleans because that year will be the city's 300th anniversary. But, Bagley said, the NFL looks favorably on communities that have resolved stadium issues, such as Minnesota.

While in New Orleans, Bagley spoke with senior NFL officials, including Commissioner Roger Goodell's executive VP for business operations, Eric Grubman, about hosting a Super Bowl in Minneapolis.

"No one could guarantee it, but they were very encouraging about Minneapolis getting a Super Bowl," he said. "We feel good about it, and we feel good about the feedback from the league. We've got to put together a strong bid and a strong host committee."

Discussion of uniforms in the other thread got me thinking...

If there's one thing that I want to see in the new stadium, it's that they get the color of the lighting correct so that the Vikings' uniforms show as PURPLE on TV and not blue. I never understood why they never fixed that during the entire life of the Humpty Dome.

The Vikings and Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority on Friday made its most important hire to date, signing Mortenson Construction of Golden Valley to coordinate the building of a downtown Minneapolis stadium that promises to transform the city skyline by the time it opens in July 2016
Didn't see this posted yet. I am glad that this stadium is inching closer to fruition!

I think the blue cast to the Vikings uniforms that we see on broadcasts of home games is due to the way the TV cameras interpret the lighting in the dome, not necessarily the lighting itself. It may be a gamut problem. Whatever the cause, it would definitely nice to to see Vikings purple when watching a home game rather than Vikings blue or blue-violet.

It won't be an outdoor stadium, but the final design for the roof hasn't been announced yet. The Vikings have expressed some hope to have a retractable roof, if it can be done within the budget.

I keep reading reports that the gambling funding is behind... what does this mean for the project?
