Maybe it is just me, but I don't see how Sherels is going to be the PR. He isn't special at all. So either these younger players are really bad at returning or they are just having a hard time grasping the concept of returning in the NFL. I hope it is the latter.

It is pretty sad to be almost four weeks from the start of training camp without having found a punt returner. But Robinson has barely practiced yet due to his hamstring injury, and god know what's happening with Jarius Wright. Walters is a long shot to make the roster, so probably isn't a factor.

Word is Wright has struggled with punt returns (I believe the phrase was "making the coaching staff nervous" which, to me, means having a hard time fielding them cleanly). He only has 17 career punt returns in college (none last season). Burton isn't a lock to make the roster either and he's certainly not good enough at any position to warrant keeping him on as a "specialist." I'm sure Priefer is hoping Robinson wins. It's the best-case scenario, providing he has sure hands and can handle it. He certainly has the speed.

Edit: found this on Robinson:
Emerged as a standout punt returner in 2010, earning honorable mention accolades by averaging 15.2 yards per return (ninth in the country) as a sophomore, though he did not return a punt for score over his career.
So he has the credentials. I'm sure one of the main reasons he hasn't locked it up yet is the injury/lack of opportunity.

I take comfort that this is exactly what the preseason is for when you have new guys. Unless you have a Hester or Cribbs, teams are going to experiment and hold a competition until they have a clear-cut winner. I don't think it's out of the ordinary to, at this point, not yet have the punt return position settled.

That's true, but it's often because teams have several guys battling for the job. Not because they can't find a single one that is adequate.

While we're on the subject of punt returns ...

Wow, you really have to read carefully these days. Headlines can be deceiving. For example, the PP currently has a report with the headline Minnesota Vikings: Marcus Sherels will return punts in season opener.

The report says Sherels is "penciled in as the starting punt returner for the Minnesota Vikings' season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 9, coach Leslie Frazier said Wednesday, Aug. 22."

That's true but that doesn't mean Sherels will be the punt returner in the season opener. In fact, here's what Frazier actually said (emphasis mine):

http://www.vikings.com/news/article-1/V ... 57fff7cbab
Right now, Marcus Sherels will probably be our opening game guy if we were at that point but we still have guys fighting for that position. We’re going to work Josh Robinson back there, we’re going to give Stephen Burton a chance as well, Bryan Walters will get a chance. We’re still evaluating it but Marcus is still ahead of the rest of the guys right now.
The PP needs to write it's headlines a little more carefully!

Adrian Peterson - RB - Vikings

Adrian Peterson has experienced no swelling in his surgically-repaired left knee the day after practices.

Peterson has been practicing without contact for more than a week now. It's a great sign that he was able to take 18 first-team carries on Monday and wake up the next day with no complications in his knee. Players often experience swelling and soreness when they first return to the field following an ACL tear. If he can sustain these good vibes after taking some hits, he'll be on track for an impact in Week 1.

I don't see a big difference in 18 carries with nobody touching you and the rehab work that he had been doing before being removed from the PUP. That's not a "return to the field" when it comes to playing football.

But, I'm glad to see they're taking baby steps. I think his playing in the opener just 17 days from today is a long shot, and just as well. I'd like to see him practicing in pads for a few weeks, with his own teammates kinda-sorta tackling him, before you have opposing linebackers dragging him down by his ankles.

I'm not 100% sure, but he's likely doing "football running" instead of simply drills. There's a difference between doing agility drills and going full speed trying to make defenders miss by doing split-second cuts and sudden acceleration, even if you're not being hit. I'd be anxious to see the type of "carries" he did. Were they really AT full speed? Was he jumping and cutting? I'm certainly not a trainer, but I'd think evaluating the knee after this type of activity is more telling than getting hit as you're really putting strain on your legs. I'm sure he'll have to re-adjust to the speed of the game some though if guys aren't going all-out to tackle him.

If it makes you feel better, it is only 13 teams (we play our 3 division rivals twice a year). I'll take any consolation I can get!

But, you're right - It could have been any of them...
I've told people a million times not to exaggerate!

Adrian Peterson - RB - Vikings
ESPN's Chris Mortensen confirms Adrian Peterson (knee) will experience contact in next week's practices.

It's the next best thing to seeing game action, as Peterson has to get used to taking hits in order to get into regular-season form. All signs continue to be positive in Peterson's return from reconstructive surgery.

@StribDW: Viking injury updates: MRI on TE Rhett Ellison showed only mild patellar tendonitis. Mistral Raymond also had tests on back only had back spasms. Should be OK going forward.

He didn't play. They said he experienced lower back problems during warmups.
