Joe Thuney For Guard?

It looks like the Patriots aren't going to retain his services. While this makes him the top Guard in Free Agency, I think there's a few things that actually look up for us:

1.) He, Kirk Cousins, and Chad Beebe share the same agent.

2.) This agent has a good relationship with the Vikings.
No
3.) Said agent could help convince Kirk to restructure his contract to get some top flight interior linemen.

Despite the fact that Thuney might command top dollar, I think the Vikings are dark horse contenders to get Thuney.

It'd be a dream come true.

Especially the dream part.

We're currently $10 million under the cap. Thuney is going to cost more than that.

Or maybe Anthony Barr gets cut.

I'm not in favor of restructuring Cousins. That's just kicking the can down the road, to a point where he's gonna be into the Vikings for $50 million one year. I think $45 million (2022) is bad enough.

I don't want anything to do with that. Your talking 16 mill for that position. That's way too much. A dam good player but I hope they do something else. Like sign two solid Gs instead and have money left over.

Barr is getting the money it would take to bring in Thuney. They might be able to sign Zeitler but it would take more space than what they have now. Cousins should be cut next year. Pay him 45 million or cut him and have 10 million in dead cap but open up 35? I'll take plan B unless he has an incredible season.

You need to look at the scheme a player is best in. If he will suck in our scheme don't sign him. Looks like we want athletic guys that can get down field very quickly. That's why O'neil and Cleveland look like TEs. Almost identical looking players. No girth and a limited base so they can move. They don't want guys with a heavy base. I want the complete opposite. I don't give a #### about blocking 30 yards downfield. Blow up the LOS and wear guys out. Like Green had with Dixon and Stringer (700 ILB) on the right side. Teams didn't want to face that because it wore them out and they could take control. Didn't look pretty but who cares. O Brown is in a power zone blocking scheme. He don't fit. Unless he's willing to lose his base and get some movement. Thuney is a power movement guy. Basically can fit anything and play very well. That's why he's 16 million. If he will take 5 million bring him in. But that won't work for him. He's a non fit for us.

Tell you what. If the Vikings miss the playoffs again, then I think Zimmer has to be gone, at the least, and likely Cousins along with him. A $10 million dead cap hit won’t be as painful if the cap goes back up to normal in 2022.

Yep. I'll trade 10 for 35 any day. Make or break year for this regime.

Cutting Cousins makes no sense next year as his $45M will be fully guaranteed. There is no plan B.

It’s in the fine print.
If Cousins (is) on the Vikings roster on the 3rd day of the 2021 league year his 2022 salary, which is currently guaranteed for injury, will become fully guaranteed.
The 2021 league year starts in 3 days.

Wow. If he gets 45 million I'd put the worst oline in the league in front of him out of spite.

You won't see Cousins cut. QBs have value. They may trade him or franchise tag him. Besides 45M is the rate. Dak just showed that. We can use the same plan the all time Super Bowl winning coach had and sign Newton. Follow the best in the business. There's no QBs in the NFL and the need is incredible. People don't see that. I looked up Goff. He is terrible. That cost around 27M a year. And people expect a guy that threw 35 TDs while playing behind a terrible OL which saved CAP to play for nothing. What world is that? And he doesn't #### about it like other guys do. And those guys have an average line. Now that the Cheifs are ripping apart there OL we will see how Mahomes performs behind a less than good OL. When they didn't play in the Super Bowl it didn't look to good. Playing behind a terrible OL makes the QBs job much more difficult. We have much bigger problems than him and his CAP hit. We have possible the worst pass rush ever. We don't have a player in the secondary that's worth much. Smith is getting top dog CAP and he's not close to top dog anymore and is old. He needs less. Harris was franchised big cap hit and he to didn't do much. At one point he picked off some passes. That's over with. He's not 25. He's as good as he ever will be. Now people want to add some G beyond top dog CAP. That can't be considered. We could get 2 Gs for that CAP easily and another player for depth. People talking plan B when 70 pct of the NFL has no plan A.

45 million is not the rate in 2022, it is the highest cap hit in the NFL.

Exactly. It's the rate if you're Mahomes and it's a high water year of your deal. If you're Kirk it's grand theft franchise.

2022 means nothing in 2021. Many deals will change.

Prescott, who turns only 28 in July, will average $40 million a season over the next four years. Across all NFL positions, that puts him behind only Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who averages $45 million from the 10-year deal he signed last summer. Prescott now makes $1 million more per season than Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, expected to be traded this offseason.

I'm never putting a CAP number down again. I guess it's 40 million. That might have changed today or right now. It's fluid. I thought I read Mahomes restructured. I guess not.
