"There are a lot of all-whatever teams out there, but it's always sort of nice to see guys get recognition that don't always get it. So, when NFL.com released their "All-Underrated" team for this past season, I checked to see if there were any members of the Minnesota Vikings on it.
Sure enough, there were two. . .one of whom I'm not sure is "underrated" at all, and one that you might not even think is "rated," let alone "underrated."
The first one is a guy that I think we all know is pretty darn good, and that's center John Sullivan. The other one was a big surprise. . .return man Marcus Sherels.
Nobody seems to know who he is, but Sherels has been solid. He averaged nine yards per punt return and over 26 yards per kick. His punt-return TD in Detroit led the Vikings to a 20-13 victory."
Interesting take.

Personally, I don't feel Sherels brings enough to the table as a return specialist to warrant a roster spot, especially given how inept he is as a corner. As it stands, I prefer that duty going to Josh Robinson or Jarius Wright (provided they have reliable hands).

I agree, I really felt that Scherel's return TD against the worst coverage unit in the NFL bought him equity that he really didn't deserve.

I agree. Sherels is solid, but not a spectacular returner. However, watching Sherels is 100x better than watching Bobby "Fair Catch" Wade.
Also, I was someone who was always a vocal critic of John Sullivan early in his career. I am very proud to say his play shut me the hell up!

Completely agree and I said this after the season when I felt they should just cut Sherels. Unless he's a Devin Hester, then I think it's horribly inefficent to have a decent returner, but who is a complete liability at his "real" position. There's so many guys out there who can return kicks, but also play a skill position at a high level.

Agreed, in order to warrant a roster spot purely for returning skills these days, you need to bring more to the table, like the possibility of taking it to the house on every touch.

For punt returners with at least 20 returns in 2012, Sherels ranked #18 in average yards per return. How you get on an all-
anything team by being ranked #18, I don't quite understand.

Sullivan replaced Birk which is no easy task, but i will admit he has turned out far better than I expected he would
