Re: Kluwe rips Frazier, Spielman, Priefer
Who is he "donating" the money to and is his lawyer also donating his cut?

He'll be donating to some LBGT charities, I don't have specifics on which ones.

And no ... I'm sure he won't have access to whatever his lawyer's 'cut' it. What's that got to do with him?

Kluwe tweeted Friday that he was still pursuing a lawsuit against the Vikings and would seek "max damages" that he would donate to LBGT charities.Cliff wrote: He'll be donating to some LBGT charities, I don't have specifics on which ones.

"This is not about the money for me," Kluwe wrote. "This is about doing what's right."
I suppose some would interput that as him meaning that he is donating ALL the money to LBGT but that is NOT what he tweeted. He did state that he would be donating to LBGT. He could be donating some, paying his lawyer, and keeping the rest. Time will tell.
I would add that if he does donate all of the money I will have a great deal more of respect for him and his beliefs.

Well, he can't donate his lawyers fees because he doesn't have access to that money. So ... that's an impossible thing to want from him.Purple bruise wrote: Kluwe tweeted Friday that he was still pursuing a lawsuit against the Vikings and would seek "max damages" that he would donate to LBGT charities.

As far as how much he's donating, you're wrong, he has specifically said that he'll donate "every penny".

Kluwe said his potential lawsuit would be for lost wages and emotional distress. If he does sue and win, however, he doesn't intend to keep the money.
"Every single penny I would donate to LGBT charities," Kluwe said. "It's not about me getting the money; it's about showing the NFL you can't do this."
According to Tomasson on Twitter, the potential lawsuit could be worth upward of $30 million:

There are attorneys that are also charitable and would donate their fees also. As I said, time will tell what he actually does with the proceeds. Most attorneys fees are in the neighborhood of 30%, so a potential 9 million dollar payday would be in line for the attorney.
To me, it seems ludicrous, but to each their own.

Yes, time will tell ... but he's already committed the money if he wins. Which was more the point. He could be lying about it I guess ...Purple bruise wrote: There are attorneys that are also charitable and would donate their fees also. Like I said, I don't know what the payment is like between Kluwe and his lawyers. Where are you getting that 30% number? That seems high unless you're doing one of those "accident victim" cases where the lawyers don't get paid until you do. It's also possible that Kluwe already had a lawyer on retainer consider how much money he makes. So it could be his lawyers wouldn't get anything extra from it at all.
Regardless, it sounds like your beef is more about what laywer's charge rather than what Kluwe is doing with whatever money he would win.

I work with and for several attorneys and in civil litigation, 30% is not uncommon. I will tell you this, that IMO this was a horrible comment made by this coach and he should be heavily penalized for making such a horrific comment. Again If Kluwe donates all of this money, my opinion will drasticaly change towards him.
As a Viking fan, this type of distraction could not have come at a worse time. New coaches, new system etc.. So that is what I am most concerned with. This settlement will set off a chain reaction around the league. This coach said this and this coach said that... Millions of dollars at stake and guess what, it will all be passed down to the "consumer" you can bet on that.

Re: Kluwe rips Frazier, Spielman, Priefer
I think today's political correctness society just blows this stuff out of proportion. The fact it was said out of frustrated jest and Kluwe himself laughed at it should make this a non issue.
I think this is more about Kluwe trying to remain relevant. Kluwe reminds me of Dale Gribble on "King of the Hill" when he threatened a government agency with the fact that he had a phone with nothing better to do all day. Kluwe seems to fit this profile now.

Re: Kluwe rips Frazier, Spielman, Priefer
Nobody is actually sure if that's what happened or not. Or exactly how far it goes ... we'd have a better idea if they'd release the report. I'm starting to doubt that will ever happen.Knoxx wrote:I think today's political correctness society just blows this stuff out of proportion. I don't know what Kluwe's motives are ... you could be right.I think this is more about Kluwe trying to remain relevant. However, it's also obvious that Priefer was in the wrong. After an independent review the team suspended him and Priefer apologized. If there was no evidence of wrong-doing neither of those things would have happened.
Re: Kluwe rips Frazier, Spielman, Priefer
To some extent, this case is clearly about the money. That's why Kluwe wants the Vikes to make a $1 million donation and is interested in suing for considerably more than that if he doesn't get his way. Just because it isn't about personal financial gain doesn't mean it isn't about money. Kluwe obviously wants the Vikings to pay.
Of course, that appears to be true in more than one sense of the word pay.

Re: Kluwe rips Frazier, Spielman, Priefer
It's not what many people would call "about the money". Kluwe's demands are purely vindictive, and nothing more.Mothman wrote:To some extent, this case is clearly about the money. Which is exactly why I pointed out that it can still be "about the money" even if the money isn't for direct personal financial gain.Eli wrote:It's not what many people would call "about the money".
Re: Kluwe rips Frazier, Spielman, Priefer
That doesn't make any sense at all to me. Then again, most of the comments in this thread make little sense to me. The political correctness and the self-righteousness displayed in this thread are off the charts.Mothman wrote: Which is exactly why I pointed out that it can still be "about the money" even if the money isn't for direct personal financial gain.
Re: Kluwe rips Frazier, Spielman, Priefer
It's not complicated. It just means he wants a payout from the Vikes but for a reason other than personal financial gain. Maybe his motives are altruistic, maybe they're vengeful or maybe he wants the satisfaction of having the team meet his demands while he simultaneously furthers his reputation as a hero to the LGBT cause.Eli wrote:That doesn't make any sense at all to me.

Re: Kluwe rips Frazier, Spielman, Priefer
It could also be a negotiation tactic. You ask for x and you settle for y. Happens all the time. I put the chances of this going to court at next to zero.
A settlement is a good compromise. The Vikings don't release the report and move on. Kluwe gets money to his cause and also the admission that Priefer made inappropriate comments (the severity of which can be debated but all sides are basically now acknowledging inappropriate comments were made).
