Thought the same thing. What an absolutely horrendous hire. I bet he's fired a year from now.
I'll be he isn't.
What is so horrendous about that hire? There are Vikes fans all over the board drooling over the Vikings opportunity to hire Zimmer, a longtime coach with a good reputation who has never been a head coach and has never been the defensive coordinator of a team with a playoff win and yet the Lions made a horrible choice in hiring a coach that won an AFC Championship as a head coach and was the offensive coordinator of the last year's Super Bowl winner? Where is the logic behind any of that?
Don't get me wrong. I like Zimmer as a candidate and Detroit is unkind to coaches so I don't necessarily expect Caldwell to succeed but his resumé is a lot better than the coach so many Vikings fans are dying to see the team hire.
I think we must get Greg Roman. Out of all of this years HC candidates he is the only one who can claim to have coached the HOLY SPIRIT HIGH SCHOOL SPARTANS (!!!!!!!). If there is one thing that can turn this Vikings team around, its God.
Rob Ryan or we are wasting our time. Zimmer is the same scheme, he will only bring in the Bengal castoffs like Childress did, plus Cincinnati rivals us with the number of players arrested. My guess, Spielman brings in a dark horse and by the time the new stadium opens we'll be looking for a new gm and coach.
They way the Vikes continue to drag this process on and on I would'nt blame Zimmer (or any other candidate) if they told them to pound sand. If Spielman believes Zimmer is the guy.....then make the friggin hire. If he does not think Zimmer is the guy, then tell him so. The guy is entitled to know what direction his life is going.
Maybe this process is all a smoke screen and Spielman is waiting to interview Childress for the job. It wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Aren't the Vikes also entitled to take a deliberate approach before deciding which coach will be coaching their multi-million dollar team?
No matter what the Vikings do, it always makes someone angry.

This kind of sentiment cracks me up. Tell them to pound sound because he has not yet been hired. Spielman declared early on that he would take his time, doing his due diligence in making the best possible hire for the new head coach. Fans, who no really nothing about what is going on in this or any other negotiation , make comments like this
Is anyone beating Zimmer's door down offering him a HC position? Stay calm have some patience and see how things turn out. Spielman proclaimed that a new HC would be named by the time this year's Super Bowl rolls around. Now would not seem like the time to have fans panic that the HC has not yet been named.
Do not mistake KINDNESS for WEAKNESS!
Best to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool rather than open it and remove all doubt.
Drag the process on? The season just ended 2 weeks ago. It only seems long because so many people are locked on to Zimmer as "the guy" just because he has a detectable pulse. I happen to think Zimmer's not "the guy" and I'd rather have someone offensive minded AND from a successful team as HC so I'm in no rush.
I wonder if you would be as anxious about it if you didn't take in Sports Media?
Just a thought.
I'm fine with Spielman taking his time. I do not get the impression the Vikings are dithering on this. People need to remember that Childress was the media consensus candidate when he was hired here. Look how well that turned out.
Honestly my view on this is that I do not have any reason to think Spielman will or will not do a good job on the coaching hire. We've never seen him hire a coach in MN. I'm neutral on the topic. What I do know is that Sports Media buzz is just buzz and not always in line with NFL decision making.
Ins't there still a mystery candidate out there?
Heck once the new guy gets in thing are really going to get interesting. Which favored starters fall out of favor? I can see that happening big tim in the Secondary and LB units. Same at OG. Which assistants stay on? This rollercoaster is just getting started.
On the Linehan thing: I'm skeptical of having him here as the OC. One of the Lion's biggest issues has been Stafford's turnovers. Also when Linehan was HC of the Rams they were not exactly stellar and that was with a #1 Pick QB in Sam Bradford. Point being Linehan has had his hands on two young QBs and the results have been somewhat mixed. I'm sure that the individual players had a roll here as well, but if we conclude the Linehan would be a great OC with our new young QB then we'd be putting all the onus of the past on aforementioned players. I do no think that is fair either.

Well..I'm glad you brought that up mansquatch. In being honest and looking at this from a different perspective then I do think sports media has played a big role in my wanting them to hire Zimmer. If it wasn't for a show like Hard Knocks then I probably have little idea of Zimmer's story and his full persona. I'm sure it would be known how well of a coordinator he is, but the man behind the headset would be less publicized.
Very good observation on your behalf as a guy like Bowles is someone I've heard good things about, but only on the football side of things and haven't heard much about anything else. I wanted him as a candidate as well early on, so I guess personally, I'll be happy with the choice. Only difference in me leaning Zimmer is that I know more about him based on what I've seen from Hard Knocks then having in ear out for his name since.
And to guess on the mystery candidate, I think it's probably a coach from a team in the final four. Hoping it's neither of the Seattle coordinators (Bevell and Quinn), but more sure it's probably either Roman or Tomsula from SF. Leaning Tomsula as a darkhorse.
I'm a fan of what I've seen of Zimmer. But I'm just going to be patient about it. Lots to get caught up in, but at the end of the day we have zero influence over the situation. So at times like this I just sit back and have a brew and wait for the next chapter of the franchise to begin. For me it gets more interesting once the new guy comes in and changes start happening. Then we've got something to chew on.
Of course, that is just my perspective. This board exists for folks to voice their opinions, so have at it!

Nope. I agree completely. It's just hard to let your emotional bias get in the way as fans. Sometimes I do a much better job at separating that from my perspective, but this time not so much.
I think one thing we can all agree on is that despite what our initial thoughts on the coach they do hire are...If the Vikes end up getting back to the Super Bowl and perhaps winning it, I'm sure we'd all be happy.
