I think they would have called that penalty no matter what jersey the QB was wearing. Munnerlyn was excessive and body slamming a QB like that simply isn't supposed to be allowed. That's exactly the kind of play on which "unnecessary roughness" is supposed to be called.
I actually don't think it was excessive. I think it looked worse than it was.
Munnerlyn took him down with one arm, and he's not big enough to do that without some help. His momentum, along with Blanton having Brees low, took the QB down hard, but not excessively IMO. Captain didn't lift him and slam him. I think Brees got a superstar call. Field position wasn't the issue. It was that the Vikings would have gotten possession.
Just my 2 cents.

This I can understand. But it is not just Brees. Every QB gets this double standard treatment.
Totally disagree. Only the "chosen" ones get the special treatment: Brees, Brady, Manning, Rodgers.....no other QB gets away with that nonsense.

Let me qualify that.......most QBs get special treatment...only the 4 listed above get placed in their own category where they are basically untouchable. And only the 4 above wouldn't get called for that flagrant unsportsmanlike conduct penalty

A bigger point being missed here: Where was the whistle? Maybe the TV sound was out of synch, but the whistle was very late, IMHO. And that contributed to the flag as much as anything. If QBs get the protection, then they have to be called "in the grasp" very quickly. Or would by a league that wasn't blatantly favoring offense all the time.
The call itself was by the book, as far as the rigged book goes.
And Brees absolutely should have gotten flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, thus canceling the roughing and resulting in 3rd and long over again. But of course, star QBs are given a different set of standards. (Or non-standards, as the case may be.)

Watch it until you're sick of it... I still say: No whistle, you keep playing and that means tackling, which involves taking a player to the ground. If the refs want to protect the QB, blow the whistle. Besides, it wasn't that violent, he landed on his back... but that's just my take. Oh... and Brees deserved a flag for his purse-swinging after the play.

I stopped posting during the game when Captain got the penalty. I knew there were going to be people that would say it was a penalty, and I didn't want to go off on them and get banned once I finally got back to this board.
Captain and Blanton both hit Brees, perfectly legal. And Brees getting up and hitting, and running after Blanton wasn't called. Im so mad I could puke. This took away a lot of the momentum, and led to a TD. The refs, in NO once again screw us.
Zimmer didn't have this team ready to play. The D was in shock the whole first quarter, and Brees picked them apart, and their running game dissected our D. As much as we got on Fraizer, Zimmer was to blame for this.
But. At least this coaching staff can make adjustments. Norv is getting worse, not better, at play calling. He cant even get CP the ball. We throw to the ex packer too much. Having Wright is a complete waste. Kyle has been dropping more then he has been catching.
And Kalil, like I said last week, is a bum. Sorry if that offends people, in my mind, that's what he is.
My prediction of 5 wins is going to be tough if the Vikings don't get their act together.
The best thing about the game is Teddy. He is exactly what I thought he was. Now if Kalil and Johnson don't kill him, we might be able to win a game or two.

great question. Can't remember who (maybe socal??) brought it up in the game day thread, but what if Brees flipped the ball to Pierre Thomas who then took it for 60 yards??? How many times do we see plays like that on Sportscenter?
It's not like Captain is a 300 pound DT. He was struggling to bring down Brees. The play was still live, and the ref didn't blow the whistle. What else was he supposed to do??? It wasn't dirty. the only way he could bring Brees down and end the play was to leverage his own body weight.
It was a horrible call, and Brees' response during the game and after the game are just pathetic. I have zero respect for that guy.

I didn't think it looked that bad either. At best, it should have been off-setting fouls.

Completely agree. The Vikings stopped them, momentum Vikings, they get the ball, maybe score and take the lead. Instead, the bullsh*t call reverses the momentum. It's a game changer. Sure the defense still needed to make a stop ... but THEY did make a stop, and would have gotten a chance to get off the field and rest. Instead they had to stay out there. Momentum is everything in football.

It's important but it's also there to be seized on almost every play. The Vikes needed to seize it back.

Yes, both teams battle each other to seize momentum on every play. Which is why its so frustrating when your team clearly seizes it and the referees step in to take it away and give it to the other team.

From the Strib
Head coach Mike Zimmer said he spoke to referee Walt Anderson after the play, and he felt Munnerlyn threw Brees down with force. Anderson also said he blew the whistle once Munnerlyn and Blanton wrapped up Brees.
So the Zebra says he blew the whistle.

Watched it a few times with the volume up... the whistle blew after Munnerlyn had already taken Brees off his feet... no way he could have stopped the tackle in mid-air.

Then why was the flag thrown by a ref that was on the other side of the play and not by the ref behind the QB? Just watched it and the whistle blew while Brees was still going down and immediately after the same ref threw the flag.
