How many of these guys do you know from 2011????

4. ..... CHRISTIAN BALLARD (106), DL, Iowa
5. ..... BRANDON BURTON (139), CB, Utah
6. ..... DEMARCUS LOVE (168), OL, Arkansas
6. ..... MISTRAL RAYMOND (170), DB, South Flordia
6. ..... BRANDON FUSCO (172), OL, Slippery Rock
6. ..... ROSS HOMAN (200), LB, Ohio State
7. ..... D'AUNDRE REED (215), DL, Arizona
7. ..... STEPHEN BURTON (236), WR, West Texas A&M

What a great year with all those picks huh???? Mostly the same from the other years as well. Take a look at the WR's and QB's theyve selected if you want a better laugh.

"Build through the draft"... Building "WHAT" exactly?????

Not making any case when all your examples are from the 5th round and lower. Ballard is in the defensice line rotation, which is what you at least want for a 4th rounder.
A successful coach needs a patient wife, loyal dog, and great quarterback - and not necessarily in that order.

Or 2010.....

4. ..... EVERSON GRIFFEN (100), DE, Southern Cal
5. ..... CHRIS DEGEARE (161), OT, Wake Forrest
5. ..... NATE TRIPLETT (167), LB, Minnesota
6. ..... JOE WEBB (199), QB, UAB
7. ..... MICKEY SHULER (214), TE, Penn State
7. ..... RYAN D'IMPERIO (237), LB, Rutgers

They continue to waste money and draft picks year after year after year. TWO PLAYOFF WINS since 2000!!!!! I am so surprised with their proven history of building through the draft.

We like to pretend that Rick Spielmand didn't have much to do with those drafts, and that his true genius only came through last year when he was solely responsible for the draft.

We'll see. One year isn't much of a track record.

Bit different of a mentality when you're drafting for a 2 year all in period. Besides, we all know the ToA was a terrible way to run a team, and especially when it comes to draft input.

Buy the groceries that support AD (Loadholt, Felton). Dump the chaff (Harvin) and ancient (Winfield). Rely on offense that won the last 4, AD phenomenal, Ponder not exactly great, but good enough. Rely on Frazier to work his magic on team chemistry despite the indisputable fact that GM Spielman greatly weakened his football team short term this week. And pray Spielman drafts young talent that will peak when that shiny new stadium opens in 2016. Lots of hope, but Spielman does not have the track record to remove doubt about his leading this new direction successfully.

I Just wish we'd go get a really good WR for Ponder to have a chance. After Watching Spielman on NFL Channel it doesn't look like he will go for a Good #1 WR in FA. Who knows. I just wish we had a true #1 WR

Purplemania wrote:No offense, but I have to laugh when Vikings fan say this. Dude, our WR was horsecrap last year. HORSE CRAP. They sucked. Aside from Harvin, who all he could do is run short routes and turn them into big games, our WR suuuuuuuuuckeddddddd. If anything, I am so happy we are going into next season with new faces, and the two players returning at the WR position is the only two WR that I want back. Contrary to what you believe, I believe this is a step forward.
Where did I say the WR corps was anything but bad last year? My point is that it became even worse with Harvin gone, which is the wrong way for it to go. What's more the D secondary has taken a hit because Winfield is gone and it's another unit that needs all the help it can get.

If you need to confabulate that Harvin could do nothing for the team but catch short passes and turn them into big gains, which is actually quite an accomplishment, that's your problem. For those more grounded in reality they will also remember the impressive runs out of the backfield, the big catches, and the fact that NO ONE in the NFL has scored more TDs returning kicks than Harvin since his rookie season in 2009.

How do you know we do? Its his second year. What did you think after Childress running the show after 2 years. Right now Spielman has shown he doesnt care about big name Receivers. At all. He has shown he wants to draft. And now we will have years to wait, after a 1-6 season, to even see where we are at. You do know it takes time to develope talent right? And good coaches, proper training, etc.

Let's see how long does it take to develop talent hmmm. it took just one season for Kalil, Harrison Smith and Blair Walsh.

But that was unusual. For all 3 to be that good. I cant remember when that happened before. But will be happy if it happens again.

mrc44 wrote: Are your comparing to the WR position or QB position? If so, that is completely unfair. neither of the positions you listed are nearly as difficult and complex as the WR or QB position. All a kicker does is kick! A left tackle has to be able to read defenses and block. A safety has to read offense and react to decisions made by the offense. The QB has to remember EVERY players assignment on every play. The WR is not as complex as the QB position but I would consider it a more difficult position than the three you have referenced. JMO
No, not comparing just pointing out to koolaid that it does not always take very long for talent to develop. And I give credit for Spielman making those picks and think that he has it in him to duplicate that feat with 11 fresh picks this year.

I think that the playing safety is more difficult than WR.

Reacting to what the other teams offense is doing, rather than just running your own route, seems obviously more complex. By far. Yes you have to remember the plays but that's easier than having to guess what the other team is doing.

Harrison Smith was the biggest difference in our defense last year for me, testament to the difficulty of the position and ability of the player to make such a difference so quickly.

Bottom line is this is very disappointing. Last year we arguable had the WORST wr corps in the NFL and everything points to be even worse this year. great job by the front office. Way to take the heat off ap. Need some decent wr's to spread the field and not have ten defenders in the box, but that does not seem to matter to ricky. Go ahead and free up a bunch of extra cap space (harvin, Winfield, Carlson) and don't use a penny of it to improve the team. hes a ted Thompson wannabe. only issue is the packers have a great history of drafting wideouts (and even they took time to develop) whereas the vikes have a LOUSY track record of drafting wideouts other than moss YEARS AGO and harvin recently. Pathetic. And the points about getting some solid receivers to help with ponders development are solid arguments. Last year 90% of the time no wr's were getting separation so ponder had no one to throw to. How many games did he have less than 100 yards passing? again - majorly pathetic. Free up twenty million and sit on it. youre only going to spend a limited amount on draft picks, so take a chance on someone for godsakes. To me it looks as if they are pinching pennies so the wilfs have some money to cover the cost of the retractable roof at the expense of the quality put on the field. Florida marlins north.
