Updated OP with scenarios for us to get the #5 seed and the easiest way for us to get the #6. Of course there are other possibilities for us to make it, this is just the easiest way. After next weekend there will be all kinds of different ways depending on the outcomes of games. I deleted winning the division since that is no longer possible and deleted the first round bye since its not possible to get a bye without winning the division.

Is it mathematically impossible for the Viknigs to get the 6th spot if they go 9-7, splitting the final two games with a win over Green Bay (a conference win)?

I don't think he will make the playoffs but it is fun to be playing for something at the end of the season other than pride!

No, it is not mathematically impossible. To make the playoffs with a 9-7 record, the following would need to happen:

Vikings: Win against the Texas or the Packers (going 1 and 1 in the remaining games - Using the ESPN simulator it does not appear to matter which game is won in this scenario)
Bears: Lose against the Lions OR the Cardinals (going 1 and 1 in the remaining games)
Giants: Lose out (going 0 and 2 in the remaining games)
Redskins: Must beat the Cowboys in week 17 OR lose out
Cowboys: Must lose to the Redskins in week 17 UNLESS the Redskins lose out.

Complicated stuff, but mathematically we wouldn't be eliminated with a loss this week... unless the Giants were to win.

In other words, this weekend root the hardest for Ravens then Redskins. Maybe Lions can pull one off too but doubt it. then again if we take care of business vs the Texans(tall order), we are looking very good as I doubt Packers will have anything to play for that week.

I would love for us to get the #5 seed and play which ever team wins the East in round 1. A win would then advance us to playing the #2 seed (which looks like will be the 49ers). Winning that game would then put us in the NFCC game, which I hope would be us @ Atlanta. Then I hope to go to over time and win on a field goal. Make them feel what we felt in 98.

I like this scenario! And why not take it one step further... in the Super Bowl the comeback player of the year and MVP Adrian Peterson takes down the runner up, Peyton Manning. :smilevike:

If we want the #5 seed the following needs to happen:

Vikings 8-6
Texans W
Packers W
10-6

Seahawks 9-5 (head to head tie breaker)
49ers L
Rams L
9-7

Cowboys 8-6
Saints L
Redskins W
9-7

Redskins 8-6 (head to head tie breaker)
Eagles W
Cowboys L
9-7

Giants 8-6
Ravens L
Eagles W
9-7

Clearly, either the Cowboys, Redskins, or Giants are going to win their division so if one of them goes 10-6 that would still give us the #5 seed.

For us to just make the playoffs this is just one scenario

Vikings 8-6
Texans W
Packers W
10-6

Giants 8-6
Lose either remaining game.

If the giants lose one game and we win out then we will make the playoffs. This is the case because at best the Giants would be 9-7, and the Cowboys (8-6) and Redskins (8-6) play each other so one of them at best will be 9-7 and the other if they win out will be 10-6 and win the division. This is the simplest scenario for us to make it. If the Giants lose next weekend and we win, then the Packers game will be for a playoff spot.

Time for me to eat a double decker crow sandwich of whatever you are eating up there in Alaska advikingsfan! Of course I want some of that good stuff you are smoking first to give me the munchies. :D :D :D :D :D

I dont think the Vikes have a chance to beat the Rams. But if they did, the Packers and Texns may not be playing for anything. And may rest some of their stars. And then we might have a chance to back into a playoff spot. But I have a feeling when the seasons over, and we know the final win/loss for the year, things on the board will be alot different.

Lets hope so :nono:
