Re: 2014 Current and Potential Coaches
Greg Roman is an interesting candidate. He has done a lot of under the radar work with the 49er offense that I think is quite good.
You know, in retrospect, it has been probably since Linehan that we have had some significant Offesnive Coordinator talent in MN. Tomlin on the Defensive side of the ball.
I'm not as sold on Wisenhunt as I once was. He has been great when he has had a QB. When he had Kevin Kolb and Matt Leinert he was a disaster. Bevell likewise, strikes me as being in the same vein, although he did do fairly well with a Journeyman Gus Ferrotte when he was here.
I'm hoping we get Zimmer or Roman. I think those are two who I think bring the most talent.

I hope they don't take to much longer waiting to talk with other prospects. If they do, some of the people they had pegged as "finalists" will be gone to other teams. However, I suspect who ever we end up with as coach, Spielman will claim that this is the guy he was after all along.dead_poet wrote:

I will be really disappointed if Zimmer went anywhere else but here. He is by far the best they've interviewed so far. I would hate for him to be gone while we're still waiting on the Broncos, Niners, and Chargers to finish their season.
The only other person I would be open to is Ray Horton. Maybe he could bring the 3-4 defense here if hired.

I think that's due in part to those to players being a disaster. Talent wins football games. Which coaches in the past 25-30 years have been great without a QB?mansquatch wrote:Greg Roman is an interesting candidate. Whisenhunt coached a team that had only even reached the playoffs a few times in 50 years to the brink of winning a Super Bowl. He was 4-2 in the playoffs with Arizona. When he had enough talent on his roster to win, he won. I'd be happy to see him as the Vikings next head coach and I'm hoping one of the reasons they haven't hired one is because Spielman really wants the chance to interview him.

Heard on NFL Radio last night that Zimmer has emerged as the front runner for the Vikings.
Good stuff, but I'll feel better when the ink is on the paper.
To comment on the above: Wisenhunt the guy I wanted. For what he did in Arizona, his prior work in Pittsburgh and now look at what he's doing with that San Diego offense. He's an offensive guru and a great football coach that comes from a respectable coaching tree.

Chip Scoggins on TwitterSounds like Rick Spielman and Vikings are scheduled to be in Charlotte tomorrow, presumably to interview 49ers OC Greg Roman.

Tomsula is AWESOME. He was the interim coach for SF when they fired Singletary. Players absolutely love him and he has one of the best lines in football.
Roman would be killer for our offense. Peterson would not be forgotten about, that's for damn sure. He's also developed (along with Harbaugh) Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick. Really uses their strengths to a high level.
Zimmer is my favorite for defensive coach - My only fear is that he's TOO harsh and he's like a Schiano type that everyone hates. He sure has made Cincy's D pretty great.
fwiw - Mike McCarthy was GB's quarterback's coach in the late 90s/early 00s when they sucked. He said "I thought I'd never be welcome back here". This could go for Bevell and here.

Out of curiousty, how much of the Niners have you all seen this year? Because Roman definitely abadoned the run game more than once.
Their losing streak coincided with lopsided playcalling that showed no feel for the game. They totally forgot about Gore, who started to voice his frustration. They were hell bent on forcing Kaepernick to throw and use his legs despite limited success and a stagnant offense.
Niners fans were sounding like how Vikings sound about Musgrave, only a tad worse. I don't have a good feeling about Roman at all and I'm not sure why a lot of you are so high on him.

Re: 2014 Current and Potential Coaches
The 9ers are one of my favorite teams, so yes..I do pay attention to them. They generally won a lot this year off of Roman's formula but you have to realize they lost all 4 games without their #1 WR. Seattle blew them out, so they lost the run game. INDY smacked them in the mouth as well. Vernon Davis went out with a concussion for the Panthers game and only lost by 1pt. The NO game was all theirs to win but Drew Brees got INSANELY lucky that the Ahmad Brooks sack/fumble/recovery was "roughing the passer". They lost that game by 3.
I know fans will complain about Roman but he seems to get the best of his play calling. It's not flashy like McCarthy, Payton, or Belichick. It's grinder type of drives that keep the offense on the field and defense rested.

Re: 2014 Current and Potential Coaches
The problem that I have is that those things you described are things that happen to many many teams. Despite my thoughts on Kaepernick and his ability to run a sophisticated offense, I want a guy that doesn't have to rely on 100% health and a top 3 defense in order to stay afloat...Ya know?
Mainly, I just felt his feel for the flow of the game was off, and if it wasn't for that defense, he wouldn't be in the position he is today to even interview for these jobs.

Umm hes in charge of the flow of the game. The D is good, but the O controlled many of the games, esp. the last ones. He has solidified them as a force in the NFL the past few years.PacificNorseWest wrote:The problem that I have is that those things you described are things that happen to many many teams. Re: 2014 Current and Potential Coaches
Is there also a problem with having a top 3 defense and clock controlling offense? A win is a win.
If anything, I think Roman's offense is very sophisticated and has many different looks and formations. You should hear Gruden call a MNF for SF. He gushes at all of the formations SF runs.

Gruden gushes about anything offense related and especially quarterbacks.

Re: 2014 Current and Potential Coaches
lol so true but he broke down all of the formations that they run and loves that a team doesn't settle for a few. For what it is worth, Gore still was the hammer and if he was Vikes HC I'd assume he pound APPacificNorseWest wrote:Gruden gushes about anything offense related and especially quarterbacks.
