Do you know how many receivers have "caught over 100 receptions in the past two seasons?" That's HARDLY an impressive statistic. He didn't even catch 40 balls last season and was outplayed by an undrafted rookie (Streeter). 0 100-yard games. I'll give you this, he no longer has the highest drop rate in the league (as he did in '09). That has improved. His route tree hasn't, though. Additionally, his play dropped dramatically in 2012 when the Raiders switched to a WCO. It's not a very good fit on paper. But beggers can't be choosers and we are certainly in need of a handout.

If the Vikes sign Jennings it'll be the end of free agent activity in Minny for this year.. they'll need the rest of their cap money to sign their draft picks!!! LOL!

I don't know about that. I expect(ed) them to make at least one cornerback signing given the depth/talent of the position this season and the need we have/had before releasing Winfield. There is still talent out there Smith, Talib, Keenan Lewis. I'd be a bit shocked if we didn't add at least one guy.

I was curious too. Cruz was my favorite free agent WR and someone I wanted much more than Jennings.

However, it was pointed out to me that Cruz is a RFA. Apparently that means huge amounts of money and giving the Giants a R1 pick for him. If that's true, then I don't want him. Not that I don't like Cruz but I really want the Vikings to hang onto their 1st round picks. There are so many needs on this team and two 1st round picks means big things for the future.

We will sign Jennings today and possibly Cassel later in the week... that´s my prediction.

I think Jennings makes sense. Spielman has talked about the ideal scenario at WR as combing a FA veteran and some rookie talent. I have to believe that they´ll do everything that they can to not let him leave Winter Park today without a contract.

I would be more than shocked if the Vikings didn't sign a CB from the free agency. I just can't see them cutting Winfield and leaving that hole open. Sure, the Vikings might draft some DB help. But I believe with Winfield gone, they'll want a veteran CB too. At least, I hope so.

I'd be happy with Jennings. If it doesn't work out maybe they can grab Brandon Lloyd as the Pats are expected to release him before the weekend.

I am intrigued by Cassel but I wonder what Jason Campbell would cost. I think I'd rather have him actually. The next 24hrs should provide some news to discuss.

Confused?

DHB may have "improved," but he wasn't very good from the get-go. His route running is limited and that's being nice. He can run straight and he does it very fast. I'll give him that. Multiple times was outplayed by his successors at the position. Had one decent year in 2011 and people think he's worth a look? Hell no...Enough of you whine about the medicority of the WR position in Minnesota over the years yet want them to go after DHB? Makes no damn sense.

If they sign him it would be a mistake.

I think that´s a strong possibility too. There´s good depth and fitting with Spielman´s MO would be a signing later in the FA period at a smart price. Plenty of players to pick from, so many that I´m not terribly concerned about losing Toine, though I did like him quite a lot.

fiestavike wrote: I realize this is overly simplistic, but two outside WRs who can run as fast as DHB and Simpson (despite their limitations) does pose a threat if they don't keep two safeties back. In the passing game, it opens up the underneath routes for Wright and Rudolph. In the running game it provides more room for ad. It makes for pretty easy reads for Ponder and allows us to invest big money in other positions. I don't think anyone thinks DHB is doing to be great, he was obviously VERY raw when he was drafted, but if he can be adequate and stretch the field, and can do that for a low cost, it wouldn't be a terrible move.
I would agree if they had more variety on offense. Minnesota's biggest problem last year from the WR group was that of separation. Not separation on the 9 route, but from the lack of crisp and fluid route running on the intermediate routes. If you have two guys on the outside with only straight line ability then it's extremely easy to defend (if Minnesota has a glaring weakness then I would doubt teams would only rely on one safety) when you have a QB like Ponder who can't chuck it 70 yards. Even then...

I'm glad you bring up Rudolph though because lots of people are making the mistake that we only have Wright and Simpson left as "receivers." Rudolph is a great talent and even though he doesn't play the WR position, he is still a receiver type. In theory, what him, Wright, and Simpson bring to the table are all complementary of eachother. Even just adding one proven and successful route runner (Jennings, perhaps) and this team is markedly better because of the variety.

I'm over-emphasizing my disdain for DHB because I think with a team trying to build a WR unit, the goal should be with more definitive talent and if not polished coming out of college then someone who is playmaker beyond just straight line movement.

Nate Washington - WR - Titans

ESPN's Paul Kuharsky passes along "word" that Nate Washington fell out of favor with the Titans' coaching staff when he "gave half-hearted effort" over the final month of last season.

Washington managed just eight catches for 113 yards and no touchdowns in the final month, although this sounds like something that goes behind box scores and game-day performance. Washington has zero chance of playing 2013 on his scheduled $4.2 million base salary. We expect him to be released in the near future.

Next CB deal likely done is in New Orleans. Saints are close to deal with Steelers free-agent CB Keenan Lewis that could be done today.

Lewis was an under-the-radar guy I was sorta hoping we'd bring in for a visit. Starting to concern me a little. If no move is made and Winfield signs elsewhere I shudder to think about our secondary this season.
