PurpleKoolaid wrote:Rickie doing crap in FA. Over paying for a DE that I don't even think played 2 series in a row as RDE. Heck Griffen would have made a better rushing LB like Mack. And then not even making a play on Verner. WTF is he saving his money for? To fill out the rest of the ST roster first? Sick of these lack luster FA's. But I Guess Zimmer and Norv just have to touch the fore heads of players like Cassel, Dean and Jasper and they will be Pro bowlers next year. Get used to being in the cellar ladies and gentlemen.
Hmmm doing crap huh? Griffen has had 13.5 sacks in 2 seasons as a BACKUP. You can't ask for more production than that. I have no problem having him be the starter opposite Robison. I can see him producing even more than Robison will. As for overpaying, even ESPN said, you are going to see more inflated contracts than you did in the past because of the increased salary cap.

Also, I wanted Verner as well but when you look into it, Verner was more of a zone corner, hence why he is now going to be sitting in Leslie's soft zone all day. Zimmer's defense is more man to man so he didn't really fit the whole scheme of things.

Get used to being in the cellar??? come on man. Just unnecessary, negative, tiring comments from you. Do you not realize that ONE day of free agency has passed and the draft hasn't even got here yet?? I mean are you aware of that?? Are you aware that we just landed a very solid NT on day ONE of free agency and got him at a very reasonable contract?? I swear this happens every year...."fans" go ballistic after day ONE of free agency saying "WHAT IS RICK DOING, WE HAVE GOTTEN ANYBODY". Its day fricken one!!!!

And you're asking why he is saving his money?? It's been 1 damn day dude. Also, name me the last team to succeed that spent a crap ton of money in FA that offseason?? My guess is, you can't name one. Teams are built through the draft and that's the bottom line.......because Stone Cold said so

it was a mistake not to sign verner we could have easily spent that level of money on him. huge mistake.

I'm happy about the Joseph and Griffen signings.

I imagine we'll see a CB signing by the end of FA. Maybe a veteran type for not much money. Doesn't look like they'll be breaking the bank for one. It's possible Zimmer thinks they can work with the CB's on the roster and a rookie or two.

As for Verner, I wouldn't be surprised if he does very little in Frazier's #### defense.

Yeah but the big question is, how good of a man to man corner is he and does he fit what Zimmer wants?

Chris Cook - DB - Vikings

The 49ers are showing interest in free agent CB Chris Cook.

On Tuesday, the Niners cut Carlos Rogers and allowed free agent Tarell Brown to hit the open market. That leaves Eric Wright, Tramaine Brock and Chris Culliver as their top-three corners. Cook fits the mold as a physical, press player that goes 6'2/212. The Niners have also been linked to Nolan Carroll.

Now that I have The numbers from the Griffen and Sherels deals we have:

$23,660,253

In cap space; that number includes the rookie cap already taken out. Between Brinkley, Dean, Cassel, and Joseph I would expect another 10-12M to be taken up.
....this was from a guy on the other forum I belong to. He actually keeps an entire spread sheet with everyone's salaries on it so I imagine this is pretty close to accurate.

GBFavreFan wrote: I know on paper it seems like the wise move to spend minimal money on a CB in free agency, but Spielman's recent history on those types of CB's are crap. We're talking Zack Bowman, Chris Carr, and Lito Sheppard. They all seemed like nice ideas at the time "veteran types for not much money", but all 3 fizzled out quickly. Spielman either needs to go for the guy that everybody wants and get him, or take a pass and move on to another position like Guard in free agency. Coupled with his CB draft picks, he's simply not good at evaluating CBs in the NFL from his own notes.
Yeah, I'm just saying what I expect to see, not what I would like to see :)

I'd like to see them go after Captain Munnerlyn personally. Maybe DRC but I don't follow him too much.

I hope don't we don't try to draft a CB in 2nd round again. Our last two sucked. Cedric Griffin and Chris Cook. We need to grab DRC or maybe Revis. Spielman is almost as bad at finding corners as he is with QBs.

I was riding the Verner bandwagon also but the more I'm looking at it now he doesn't really fit our defense very well. He's a heck of a player don't get me wrong but he's more fit to play in a cover 2 Zone role than in Zimmers man-to-man role. I really like the idea of going after Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie or his cousin Antonio Cromartie. While i'd prefer DRC because of his youth they both would be an ideal scheme fit as man-to-man coners and with their size (DRC 6'2" - Antonio 6-3") and speed combination would be excellent match ups for all of the tall receivers we face in the division.

A couple of guys who could be interesting are Tarrell Brown and Carlos Rogers. Both leaving the SF 49ers and while Rogers is 32... Brown is just 29 and does a decent job in man to man.

I've heard from multiple sources that Verner didn't want to come here, and never even entertained talks with us, so everyone crying we didn't get him have to understand he would've had to want to come here.

Munnerlyn hasn't generated much interest outside of the Jets so far.

Please show us your multiple sources. I am quite interested in that comment. Thanks.
