Stadium thread

Two items from Peter King MMQB today. The 2nd I have been waiting for.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/w ... index.html
1. I think regarding the Minnesota stadium situation: It's the fourth quarter. Two-minute warning. Tie game. I don't care that the commissioner says there's no threat, or no implied threat, about the Vikings leaving town if a new stadium doesn't get built. There is a threat. If the local pols don't vote for a new place in the next two or three months, there's a very good chance the team will actively look to move. "I've been here several times on the stadium front over the years,'' Roger Goodell told the Minneapolis Star Tribune on a visit to town Friday. "In 2006, they moved forward with a stadium for the Twins and the Gophers. We were asked to move to the next year. And it's now 2012."

I can tell you this: The league doesn't want the Vikings to move; the franchise is a tremendous one, with tradition and a foothold in an area of the country the league doesn't want to lose. Getting a team back in Minnesota will be tougher than it was 15 years ago when the league worked to get the Browns back in Cleveland. The economy's different. The political environment to build stadiums is far different. This week will be a telling one for the future of the Vikings in Minnesota.

2. I think, for those who have chided me for being so absolute on the Vikings stadium and saying late in the season that it was just a matter of time before the deal got done to build a new stadium ... you're right. I'd love to tell you why I was strong on that, but I can't, and in the end, it doesn't matter. The resolution wasn't nearly as close as I was led to believe, and so have at it. I deserve the flaying.

So, I asked this before... but I idn't get much of an answer. Actually, I didn't get any answer...

Does anyone know the steps that the bill has to go through before it is a done deal and Dayton signs the paper?

1. Several house committees, note amendments will be introduced

2. Several Senate committees, note amendments will be introduced

3. Full house, amendments will be introduced and/or eliminated

4. Full Senate, amendments will be introduced and/or eliminated

5. If it passes both house and senate then it goes to conference committee to bring the bills for the two chambers together

6. Then to both chambers for another vote.

7. if it passes, goes to gov to sign

In terms of amendments, most will quickly be defeated. The one to watch is the amendment to kill Target Center funding in the bill because passage of a bill with that amendment will kill tenuous Minneapolis City Council support. Today St. Paul legislators introduced this amendment in committee because they favor Xcel Energy Center and feel the Target Center provision hurts it.

Also pay attention to the game of cat and mouse being played by the Minnesota legislators. Example: In senate Repub leaders say they need 17 of 34 votes to be Dem to be bipartisan. Dem minoriity says we will give you 12 because minority Repubs gave 12 in 2006 on Twins stadium. The same game is being played in the house. Minnesota's finest, at their worst!

I wonder if anyone's mind has changed in the House? I doubt it, but it will be interesting to see the vote when it all said and done.

Stadium bill passes Senate Jobs and Economic Growth Committee. Moves to Finance.
Bill moves forward on voice vote. No votes against. Comments from Senators at end were moving. Sen. Michel: "This is part of our brand."

Seriously, that's encouraging news, especially the "no votes against" part of it. Let's hope the bill just keeps gaining positive momentum.

The whole L.A. "threat" thing works
First Seattle was successful with it a few years back, now Minnesota (hopefully).
Good thing we used it 2nd because soon cities will not see this as a threat, but a bluff.
Your up next, Oakland.

This stadium WILL be built in MINNESOTA.
SKOL!

i think it was mara and the commisioner basically telling our politicians they better stop dicking around playing games or there is a real danger in the vikes leaving. they needed to be slapped into reality and hopefully it works.

What is a "resolution of support"?
