One could argue that already happened with the Ponder pick but if you're referring to trades, when has he even "bet the farm"? They basically traded "chart value" for Patterson and if I remember correctly, they did likewise (or close to it) for Smith. It's not as if a team can't "lose big" by staying put. Spielman's not making crazy trades like the Ricky Williams deal or coming away from every draft with just 3 or 4 players because he's traded all of the Vikings picks away.

If the Vikes think the QB they need is available late in the first but will be gone before they pick in the second, I absolutely hope they make a reasonable trade up to get that player. As Spielman said, If they’re sitting there not being aggressive, then how are they going to hit on one?

I know we all want every pick to be a superstar, but it just doesn't work that way. Going off an analysis I painstakingly did 10 years ago, you have about a 20% chance of grabbing a stud (a guy who is one of the top 100 players in the league at a point in his career) when you are picking from the middle of the first round through the middle of the second round. That covers Floyd, Rhodes, Patterson, Harrison Smith, Kyle Rudolph, Chris Cook, and Percy Harvin (and just misses out on Loadholt, who was selected just past mid-second). The jury is out on some of those guys, but Harvin/Smith/Rudolph are hits. Cook is a miss (mess?). That's a 75% success rate for those guys. That's flat out fabulous. [Regression to the mean would have us missing on our next seven such picks, as well as watching F/R/P fail to make it big.]

My grounds for complaint would be the lack of late round success - you should score on one of those guys (maybe 10% of the 3rd/4th rounders, and 1% of the really late guys) every few years. Maybe we shot our wad on Sullivan - 6th round of 2008.

See. What a load of cr@p! McCluster and Best have been role players, but I don't really know any of the rest other than Patrick Robinson. I'd swear I've never heard of the last three guys in my life. That's real life - picking up a Kyle Rudolph and a Harrison Smith in that range is striking gold.

It's definitely good work! I don't know if either player fits into that "top 100" category you mentioned just yet but early returns on both are good. They just need to stay healthy!

The first thing that jumps out is that the Vikigns have had only three 3rd round picks in the last eight drafts. How many "studs" in that bunch? Robison? Wright? Griffen? The best that can be said for many is that they're still playing in the NFL. What's most unfortunate is that some of them even started on defense for the talent-deficient Vikings.

The Vikes have the worst GM in the entire league (or maybe in the history of) and Zimmer is lousy at giving interviews. This team is definately doomed

I always wondered about the QBs we drafted that never got a chance with the Vikes. Tyler Thigpen and John David Booty come to mind.

What could you possibly wonder about Booty? He lasted just two years on two different practice squads and has been out of football since early in the 2010 season.
