Vikings have no chance of winning the division, the #31 ranked defense is not going to be fixed over night
If they can simply get that defense within the top 20, I think it drastically increases their chances. They dont need the #1 defense in the NFL again and I feel like since that's what we were somewhat use to at one time with Zimmer, that's what everyone shoots for. If they can just get to average on defense and dont choke in the final two minutes of games, it will go a long way.

The defense was 16th in DVOA, and in the most important stat, scoring, they were tied with GB at 21. We were 3rd in scoring in 2018 and won 8 games and 8th in 2019 and got blown out in the divisional round, so you are right, being #1 in scoring probably won't help.

If this offense can make a jump with O'Connell and put us into the top 10 lets say and we can get our defense to at least average and not choking, I can 100% see this team doing some damage in the playoffs. Not just sneaking in.

This whole Danielle Hunter thing is really baffling right now. Like obviously we kept him and he's still on the team but I'm not understanding why they arent converting his salary to a signing bonus and saving boat loads of cap. I'm guessing it's more complicated than that. I'm not much of a contract guy but I feel like if we could just do that, we could go out and sign a JC Tretter and really improve this OL. Ever since Schefter reported that we were keeping him, it's been very quiet since in terms of what this front office is really thinking regarding Hunter.

But if we could get JC Tretter, I would be 100% down with seeing what Wyatt Davis has at RG. I've been following him quite a bit recently and he's on this whole new regimen in terms of workout and dieting and has came out and said how last year drove him to do this and that he doesnt want that to happen again.

I think we're crazy to not at least see what we have in Davis before immediately replacing him with a free agent guard. Or at worst, go after Ryan Bates from Buffalo who we've been talking to. He graded well at the end of last season and is an RFA. Have him compete with Davis. Bradbury on the other hand, we know what we have there and it's not good. That's why I think Tretter is the smart signing if we can make the room.

Sorry got a little off topic here.

What bothers me is, if they were going to keep Hunter in the first place, why didnt they use the space on one of the good FA Guards. This is the most confusing season ive ever had, since 1978. It seems like KOT and KAM are screwing thing up more than Rick and Zimmer did. Its unbelievable.

Here's what I'm hearing about Hunter from Pro Football Talk over at NBC Sports:
There were reportedly trade talks, but Sunday was the 20th and Hunter remains with the Vikings. That means he will receive the bonus, but the Vikings could still rework his deal in order to create cap space.

Converting the roster bonus to a signing bonus can still happen and doing so now would clear $13.5 million in space for the team. They can make that move at any point by notifying Hunter of their plans and Hunter would still receive the same amount of money.
What's got me puzzled is this ... if they're going to keep Hunter, why not go ahead and make that conversion and open up the $13.5 million in cap space, so they can sign other free agents?

That leads me to another tidbit, this time from Tom Pelissero:
Former #Packers OLB Za'Darius Smith is headed to Minnesota today for a visit with the #Vikings, per sources.

Smith's original deal with the #Ravens fell apart. Could he stay in the NFC North instead?
If the Vikings sign Smith, a guy with a lot of experience at 3-4 OLB, I wonder if they'd continue trying to trade Hunter ... and maybe THAT'S why they haven't converted his roster bonus to a signing bonus (so they aren't stuck with the $18 million dead cap).

Given the amount of money Smith is asking for (he originally agreed with the Ravens to 4 years, $35 million with incentives up to $50 million, then backed out) it would probably be a pipe dream for the Vikings to sign Smith and keep Hunter. But wow, would that be a pass rush.

Something else regarding the Packers and Davonte Adams (since that's what this post is about).

We're all sitting here laughing at Green Bay for signing Rodgers to a ridiculous extension, then trading away his top target.

But you know what? Those suckers got a first and a second for Adams. They now have four picks in the top 65 of this year's draft.

Something tells me they're not going away anytime soon.

See my question now though is, wouldnt it be a disadvantage for us to try and trade him now post-$18 million bonus? Is he now going to be a bigger cap hit for a team that wants to trade for him and are we going to lose more money on the deal now? Or am I wrong? His contract is very confusing.

Also, yeah this looks like a pretty serious visit with Smith from what I saw last night. But I also saw that the Vikings have reiterated that they will be able to move some money around to get Smith signed. Well is that the Hunter contract they are referring to? Unless they convert Kendricks or Cook to a signing bonus?

I feel like this new front office has really been hiding their cards as long as they can until they have to show them. I think it only shows us at like $2 million in cap space according to over the cap but supposedly that doesnt count the Thielen restructure. So I guess we have roughly $7 million right now.

I believe Hunter's roster bonus would have gone to a new team in a trade whether they traded him before or after the bonus coming due.

Kendricks, Cook and Hunter restructures can be done at any time and aren't really that complicated that they need to be done prior to when the cap is absolutely needed. It is a little odd they haven't freed up any cap yet, but I think they are doing everything they can to get out of the cap mess Rick created this season and not push the problem down the road.

Looks like they are only going to push signing bonus cap hits to future years if they absolutely need to, and will wait until they sign guys to see exactly how much they need to push to later seasons.

Yup I agree completely here. They are holding tight knowing that they have the money if they need it but arent just going to push everything down the road if it's not a necessity.
