None of the Top3 qbs are worth the 8th pick for the vikes. Take a stud defensive player with rounds 1&2 picksa nd take qb in round 3. Mettenburger, garapolo, murray, at least one of those guys will be there in rd 3. They all have about the same chance of being successfull as any of the top 3. The top 3 just arent that good, you can put as much lipstick and perfume on them as you want, but none are cant miss qbs.

Important position, needless to say. The Vikings can't afford to put off drafting a promising QB another year. But will they really sit and wait until their pick at #72 hoping that whichever QBs are left are ones they like?

I agree about #8, but if there's a guy they really like, waiting until the 3rd round means taking a good chance of losing him. So do you pull the trigger at #40? Try to move back into the 2nd round somewhere? Maybe even move back into the 1st round? None of these guys - whether it's the top 3, top 6, top 9 - really stand out in my eyes, but I'm betting that the Vikings almost certainly have one or two that they'd love to have. If that's the case, don't expect them to passively stay put and hope their guy falls to them.

I have a feeling if one of the several top QB's on their board doesn't drop to the #8 and they go with a defensive pick instead, they very well may pick Mettenberger in the 2nd round.

I say hold off to the third and take Savage.

I say draft a QB in each of the first 5 rounds, carry all of them on the roster, (a few might have to play special teams), hire an extra QB coach or two if necessary and let them all compete and learn for a couple of years. Then trade some of them away, keep the best and cut the rest.

That should solve this QB problem!

You have to factor in the fact that no QB the Vikings draft this year will see the field until they move into the new stadium. So you are drafting a guy that will sit and watch for a few years. Why waste that on a QB. You could potential wait until 2016 to try and get a franchise quarterback.

Anyway, I'm not in love with this year's selection. Bridgewater is my safest bet, but I don't see anything in him that I didn't already see in Geno Smith, the 2nd rounder from last year.

I think the Vikings can afford to wait for their franchise QB.

QBs tend to benefit from time to develop so it's often better if they aren't thrust into a starting role from Day One of their rookie season. That said, I see no reason to believe "no QB the Vikings draft this year will see the field until they move into the new stadium". Matt Cassel hasn't exactly proven himself to be a reliable, quality starter and I doubt the Vikings want to go with him as their QB for the entirety of the next two years if they can help it. I doubt he'd stay healthy for two complete seasons anyway so if he got hurt, either another backup would come in for him or the heir apparent would get a chance to start.

I doubt that the Vikings are making any assumptions about how Cassel will perform. There is no reason (other than bias) to think they would rather not go with him "for the entirety of the next two years if they can help it", since they have no better options and there is no guarantee they'll get a better option in the draft. Nobody knows how Cassel and the Vikes will perform under Norv and Zim with a revamped D, and I'm sure nobody knows that better than Norv and Zimmer. I think they will base their QB decision on performance, not premature conclusions.

Of course there is a reason other than bias. Here are three:

1.) He isn't that good. Statistically speaking, he's been one of the weaker starters in the NFL over the past 3 seasons.

2.) They are clearly seeking a better option. They're extremely interested in drafting a young QB and it would be naive to think they wouldn't like to see that QB seize the starting job at some point in the next two years.

3.) Cassel hasn't played more than 9 games in a season since 2010 and he has never started all 16 games in a season. Even if he plays well, there's a good chance a QB the Vikings draft this year will get an opportunity to see the field in the next two years.

Do you mean premature conclusions like "no QB the Vikings draft this year will see the field until they move into the new stadium"? You do realize, the whole point of my reply to petev_sj was that it's doubtful the Vikings are so committed to Cassel right now that a QB drafted this spring will have no chance to see the field over the next two years, right? In other words, i doubt they have already arrived that particular premature conclusion.

I have no bias against Cassel. I just see him for what he is: an inconsistent stopgap starter. Maybe he will excel under Zimmer and Turner, stay healthy and actually start every game over the next two seasons. I'm not ruling that out as a possibility but it's definitely not a certainty and I seriously doubt it's the Vikings plan.

We need to draft Bortles. I think we should trade up for him.
