If nobody has picked the Top Corner or LB I'd go that direction before I'd draft manziel. Most highly prized QBs taken high in the draft don't pan out. High reward? Probably not, high risk For Sure? This Guy is a HUGE HUGE HUGE risk. Are we that desperate? With a new Defensive minded coach, new Defensive players on board we should continue building a defense. There just isn't a QB in this draft with a HIGH probability of Panning out. All the QBs in this draft are more risk than reward to me mind

No. I think he's a true 50/50 prospect and even the best quarterback evaluators will be split on Manziel. I think he can be a dynamic and successful pro, but I'd prefer the Vikings stay away given their current circumstances and past evaluations of QB's.

I voted no, though I won't complain if the Vikings pick Manziel at #8.
It's just that I'd rather they take one of the elite D players I feel will be available at that point.

I hadn't seen my typo till now! We have certainly been impotent at the QB position recently. For the record, I'm not debating with you, just trying to clarify your point & be more precise. It's fine by me that we see it differently.
I should have said....
conversing with you is like debating myself.
The hopeful case I was making is the one I'm hoping for, that's all. But in reality, it might be but one angle of many Zimmer's staff has in mind.
Taking Manziel at #8 actually would not bother me at all. It's just the red flag I mentioned earlier that gets my attention.

Ricky boy'll trade down and get 2-3 more picks. I think a likely scenario is trading with St. Louis to #13, since they have 9 picks, and 2 first rounders. I think they'd be willing to trade up to nab a guy like Justin Gilbert at #8, since the Lions would likely be interested in him now that they have their #2 WR. Another option would be trading back with Cleveland, another team who I think might have some interest in drafting a corner like Gilbert. They missed out on Revis, and Gilbert is the consensus #1 corner in this year's draft. They have a pair of #1s, like the Rams, and we've done business with them before.
Not sure if Johnny Football is the right pick, certainly not a #8 with the amount of good QBs this draft has, and this number of big bodies that will likely be drafted early and often.

QB is a position of out-sized importance in the NFL. You have solid play at QB you can win even if you're shaky elsewhere. You have inconsistent or crap play at QB and you will struggle to win even if the rest of the team is very solid.
JFB is the single QB in this year's class who has the potential to be a game-changer at the pro level. Not just a competent QB, but the sort of QB who can alter how a defense prepares and plays. It's not because he has a huge arm, because he's tall or particularly fast, but because the guy has that "it" factor. He makes plays when he shouldn't. He's a guy in the mold of guys who have had a lot of success as pros like Tarkenton and Favre. Sure, each of those guys had their downsides, but in terms of the ability to make something out of nothing, to keep plays alive, to get the fans on their feet cheering and believing when those feet have every reason to be trudging up the stairs and headed for the nearest exit, JFB has that.
I don't know where the Vikes have JFB ranked on their board. As an advocate of BPA, especially with a very high pick like #8, if they have a guy ranked higher who is there at the slot by all means they should take him, but I have a hard time believing someone better than JFB is going to be there when #8 rolls around. Bringing Cassel back was a solid move by Spielman and it takes the pressure off at QB, but by no means does it provide a license to ignore QB in favor of a player at another position of greater immediate "need". JFB would be excellent value at #8. By no means is he a lock there, but Spielman would have to be crazy to pass on him in favor of a guy like Mosley. If it comes to it, there is no comparison there IMHO. Mack, that would be closer, but a tie has to go to the position in that case and QB would clearly carry the pick over LB.
I'm beginning to think there is a really good chance JFB will be there at #8. This is the season of guys showing off their athleticism in shorts and t-shirts, when height and weight and "potential" seem to dull the senses of NFL scouts and GMs. Honestly, that's good for the Vikings, because JFB is going to get discounted heavily due to that insanity. Very good chance he slips to 8 as this process goes on IMHO.

This kid loves to win and you can see it each and every time he hits the field, he will push people out of their comfort zones to be the best they can be. One of the biggest things we have been missing from the QB position is that passion, Ponder has never got fired up because someone was out of position and not doing what they are suppose to. I want that RAW emotion that one kid that is going to push this team to each owns limits and I'm ready for this team to show some Damn HEART! we have that in our new coach, now i want to see them draft a QB that can match the intensity and passion that Zimmer has for the game.

Yeah I see Manning, Wilson, Rodgers, Kaepernick, ETC. always getting passionate and yelling in the face of their receivers and linemen when they are not doing what there suppose to do.

That is what has been going wrong all of these years with Viking QBs.

If pip squeak tries that act (like he did with Evans grabbing him by the face mask on the sidelines and screaming in his face) he would soon be on injured reserve after getting his butt kicked. I get what you mean about passion but it must be controlled a little more in the Pros, I would imagine.

Mothman wrote:I honestly have no freakin' idea if I'd take him at #8.

I can't make up my mind about him but the remaining players on the board would have a huge impact on my decision. He's definitely not a player I'd just draft at #8, regardless of who else was available.
This perfectly sums up my feeling on this guy......which is exactly why I wouldn't pick him. At the 8th pick......on a QB.....after ponder......with questions. At this point I would have to be 100 percent sold on this pick at QB. Another position might not be as "tainted" as QB after our Ponder experiment.
At this point I'm for moving back a few spots and getting a few more picks and taking the best LB available.

Boon wrote:I never saw Tark play, he was my dad's favorite player. But looking at the highlights and actually watching A&M games, you can't help but say there is an uncanny resemblance, and we all know tark's stats. Manziel is a straight up baller, no other way to put it. I swear in 5 years, if we pass on him being available at 8, most of this board will be sitting there regretting the moment we passed on that kid. Write it down.
There's one major difference in Tark and JFB......You never see highlights of Tarkenton running down the field beyond the LOS. He ran around behind the LOS to find open receivers. JFB could easily be an RG3 II.

Yup, only took him like 18 years to get that.

Absolutely NOT!!! I would much rather see them grab one of the top 2 corners or Mosley then to deal with that knucklehead. Just my opinion.

Not really. Tark had maybe 800 yds his last 8 years including less than 50 his last 3 years. And remember, this is when they had 14 game schedules
