Well I honestly think it's all related - deep down I am sure some part of the refs thought process is "if you guys are stupid enough to drop back in the end zone for a pass, well, you ain't getting my sympathy on a marginal call".
My only hope from this play, which is frankly disgusting to watch, is that Frazier has the stones to run it for the team in the film room, point out Kalil, then re-run it. And re-run it. And re-run it. Run it in slow motion. Run it zeroed in on Kalil. Then run it five more times. Then have Kalil stand up and tell Ponder what his thought process was. That was a lot different than say Ponder making the wrong read or not seeing someone open. That was a complete and total lack of effort and caring the ENTIRE play, and there should be absolutely no tolerance for that from the coaching staff.
Well said. Kalil's effort on that play was absolutely pathetic and Webb's wasn't much, if any, better. You would think the tackles, knowing the play call and knowing it would take at least 3 seconds for that play to develop, would have given their best effort to provide the protection necessary to work. Instead, Ponder was assaulted from both sides at the top of his drop.
I'm eager to see this play on the coaches film so I can get an idea of where the pass was ultimately intended to go. The call was obviously intended to capitalize on the expectation that they'd run Peterson in that situation and I've seen similar calls work well over the years but as saint33 pointed out, it was risky.
Kalil has really been disappointing this year.

It looked like his primary read was Jennings crossing over the middle behind the line. His secondary read was probably Peterson or whoever was out to the left. That's my guess without the benefit of the coaching tape and just following his eyes.

I'll have to watch it again but I didn't get the feeling Jennings was his primary read when I watched it. It looked to me like his eyes were down the field and considering the depth of his drop, that makes more sense to me.
Who knows? Maybe I'll feel exactly the opposite after I see the play again tomorrow.

I can't believe people are blaming Webb. Ponder is completely at fault and for 2 different reasons. 1) he held onto the ball way too long, especially when he's throwing from his own EZ and 2) he didn't step up into the pocket.
You think people would know better after watching our DE's constantly run by QB's game after game because opposing QB's step UP INTO THE POCKET. Ponder dropped back and then stayed there as he lollygagged. If he stepped up after he planted his back foot and maybe throws a decisive bullet, Selvie runs right around him. How many times did Rodgers easily avoid Allen and Robison last week by simply taking a step or 2 forward into the pocket?
But in any case, Ponder had 3.85 seconds before the ball was knocked out of his hand. Way too long for any pass play. Backed up against your own goal line the ball has to be out in around 2 seconds. This kid has no internal clock and no sense for what's going on around him. And that's also why he always looks panicked. I blame Musgrave however. I have no idea why we had Ponder passing when he's backed up at his own goal line. It's really inexcusable when you know your guy has no pocket presence. They should have had AD get him more room.
