The only two guys to play quarterback for this team for more then just a few years were Tarkenton and Kramer. Kramer took over in 1979 and was the beneficiary of an older team on the decline. The offense was good but the Purple People Eaters were gone. The Walker trade damaged the team in the early '90's and Denny Green never believed in quarterback continuity. Green had Gannon, Wilson, Salsbury, Mcmahon, Moon, Johnson, Cunningham, George, Culpepper. The list goes on. They are trying to get it right with Ponder. Let's hope they do..
Culpepper was the starter for 5.5 seasons so I'd consider that stable but you're right that a lack of stability at QB has seriously hurt the team over the decades. Lack of commitment to establishing that stability was one of the biggest issues I had with both Green and Childress and whether Ponder is the answer or not, I'm glad Spielman and Frazier are at least trying to establish that kind of stability at the position.
I have a difficult time putting together top 5 lists. The top 2 are easy:
1.) Tommy Kramer
2.) Daunte Culpepper
After that, there are quite a few players who had a strong season or two but it's tough for me to rank them.

One more comment to my above posting. At least these guys understand the need for stability at the head coaching position. I believe they've only had 8 head coaches in 52 yrs.
1. Van Brocklin
2. Grant
3. Steckel (disaster-Burns should have followed Grant)
Grant (again for one year)
4. Burns
5. Green
6. Tice
7. Childress
8. Frazier
Mothman.. way in please..

I doubt that was ever a conscious decision. You keep them when they work, get rid of them when they don't. Back in the day, the heat wasn't on head coaches quite as much, so a guy didn't get fired just because the team went 3-11. Also, when the Vikings were an expansion team, expectations weren't that high.
After Bud Grant, I wouldn't give you a nickel for the entire lot. Dennis Green had some mixed success, but he was a head case and ultimately became an embarrassment. The jury is still out on Leslie Frazier.
No, history hasn't been kind to the Vikings.

Jim, when they make you head coach, can I be offensive coordinator?

I agree that as an organization, they've tended to be patient with coaches and they've avoided the trap of making a change every 3 years, which I see as a positive. The instability of constant head coaching changes is debilitating for a team. That said, there's also an argument to be made that the Vikes were
too patient with a few coaches (particularly Green).

LOL! I figured he was included in "a few" but I certainly won't argue. I thought they should have gone the Steckel route with Childress: one year and out!

Mothman. Why does it say "defensive tackle" under your Mothman I.D.? Eller was an end. Also, I have one more comment regarding coaches. Jerry Burns was on the right track in the late '80's. Lynn sabotaged the team with the Walker trade and that led to the demise of Burns. He was developing Rich Gannon. Green dumped Gannon and started the revolving door at Q.B. Gannon had some good years with K.C. and Oakland.

If I remember correctly, it has to do with the number of posts I've made on the board. It's been there so long that I've forgotten why it's there! However, it's not related to the photo.
Good points about Burns...
Jim

Just like to point out that calling Steckel a head coach is an insult to all head coaches ever in the NFL.
