He tackles almost like Harrison Smith because he likes to lunge his body at the ball carrier. However he can also wrap his hand around the carrier, I didnt see any plays where someone broke a tackle off him.
Hey dude, don't hate me but I'm a Florida Gators fan!
I love the Crimson Tide, though. Bama kicked serious butt in the BCS game. Congrats!
Anyway, yeah, I agree. Rhodes hits like a mule kick. Also, while I certainly haven't seen every game he played, I saw a lot of Rhodes and I agree that I never witnessed him having tackling problems of any kind. However, PurpleJarl is right about it being listed in many scouting reports. Very weird.

JEC334 wrote:Rhodes is a scary corner. He does play a lot of man but I think he can get better at zone. FSU doesn't play a lot of zone and I realize that in college they play more to your strengths than try to fix your weakness. He may not be the best zone player but he can jam the WR at the line and knock guys off their routes. THAT he can do.
Almost all the Rhodes has played is zone. FSU has run zone defense since Mickey Andrews left. Stoops ran zone predominantly his first year as defensive coordinator. The last couple of years he has mixed in man with the zone. Rhodes was lined up on big receivers in man to man when they were a serious threat. He shut Micheal Floyd from notre dame down in our bowl game the end of the 2011 season. Rhodes has played both man and zone. Regarding his tackling, he is a sure tackle. His last year no one threw his way. The only tape they must be watching is when he got burned against Bryan Broyles from Oklahoma back in 2010. Rhodes was a sophomore i believe. His only problem from when i watched him is that he lacks an aggressive defensive mentality. He was a decent wide receiver in high school but Jimbo asked him to switch to corner coming to FSU and he reluctantly switched and then grew to like it.

It's going to be hard knowing that my favorite former Bama running back Eddie Lacy will now be a Packer!!!!

And yes these scouting reports on his tackling is interesting. My observation are only made from watching the games and a few highlights from youtube. Im no scout though so they probably know more about the kid than I do.

From what I read the problem with his tackling wasn't how hard he hit, but in trying to hit hard he would lunge past the ball carrier and miss the tackle completely.
Misses tackles when lunging at ball carriers and when leaving his feet.

Then they can kill two birds by getting Rhodes and Harrison Smith into the same remedial tackling program.
Along with Patterson, I sure hope that the coaching staff can teach these guys some of the basic skills that they lack when getting to the NFL. That seems to be what everyone is counting on, but old habits can be very difficult to overcome.

I dont think we will have a problem with his tackling though. I know he prefers body lunges over wrapping but the guy is physical. He can still knock WRs off route and probably intimidate smaller WRs. I like him, his tackling can be fixed. Like the poster above me said, he tackles pretty much like Harrison Smith. Smith pretty much lunges into everyone he gets too and no one has complained about his tackling yet.

*slowly raises hand*
Smith displayed questionable technique far too many times last season. He made up for it in other areas but I do hope he improves on this. Can't expect to be perfect his rookie year.

Xavier Rhodes - DB - Vikings
The Vikings' official website has named first-round CB Xavier Rhodes the team's "defensive standout" through the first week of training camp.
This comes on the heels of DC Alan Williams praising Rhodes after minicamp last month. "[Rhodes] can be physical in press coverage," writes Mike Wobschall. "He has recovery speed in case a receiver gets past him, he reads and reacts well in the run game and in space while dropping into a zone, and he makes plays on the ball with good closing speed and soft hands." The No. 25 overall pick has a firm grip on one of the starting outside corner spots.

Vikings rookie corner Xavier Rhodes expected to be a quick study
"It's always tough on a rookie guy, especially a corner, to come in and play well," Williams said. "But every indicator is that [Rhodes] will, just based on his work ethic and his talent."
