Heh-- Cool, I do like outside-the-box riddles. Well then, I guess I owe one.

I'll go easy this time, plenty should know the answer to this one-- the riddle of the sphinx:

What walks on 4 legs in the morning, Two legs in day, and three legs in the evening?

Man
Walks on 4 legs in the morning = crawling as an infant, two legs in day = during most of life, three legs in the evening = uses a cane as elderly

What is it that you sleep on, sit on, and brush your teeth with?

A bed, a chair, and a toothbrush?

Or is the goal to come up with a single answer to fit all three? (Dumb English laguage....)

In case this is right, I'll offer this (granted this is not terribly difficult-- twas more of a challenge to answer 30 years ago, though):

Man and his son are driving along when WHAM-- while crossing an intersection, they're hit by a car passing through a red light. Son is rushed to hospital while jaws of life work to release the father. At the hospital, the boy is rushed into surgery and the surgeon enters to work on the accident victim and is shaken by the patient. The surgeon leaves the OR stating "I can't operate on this boy, he's my Son!"

Explain.
How can this be?

The doctor is his mom.

Riddle - I'm weightless, you can see me, and if you put me in a barrel - it will get lighter. What am I?

A flame?

I'm not going to post a new riddle because this is just a guess-- I think technically a flame would be a gaseous collection of molecules which would have a definate mass and therefore not be weightless, though in the presence of an atmosphere, it would be lighter than air and thus you could probably argue weightless, so perhaps this is the answer.

Not a flame.

A photon?

I think you guys are thinking too scientific. It can be seen with the naked eye if that helps.

It's a hole. It's "weightless", you can see it, and light can travel through it.

OK, sounds right to me-- so what is your riddle?

Yup, a hole. Just to clarify, by lighter the riddle means it will weigh less. If you put a hole in a barrel, you're taking a piece out, thus making it lighter.

Opps, sorry about that. Here is my riddle:

2 fathers and 2 sons go fishing. Each of them catches one fish. So why do they bring home only 3 fishes?

A man, his father and his son go fishing. He and his father are both fathers, so we have 2 fathers and he and his son are both sons so we have 2 sons, yet if each catches a fish there are only 3 fishes.

Of course, the eldest is also a son so techincally I think we have 2 fathers and 3 sons, but I guess you can't claim son status for the sake of the riddle unless your father is actually there...

BTW, on the hole one, I had heard that before which is why I was pretty sure my guess of flame was wrong-- I just couldn't recall the right answer. Still I think flame/photon are pretty good solutions to the question. I had always taken the answer that if you put a hole in a barrel of sand or water or whatever, it will get lighter because its contents will escape. However you frame it, it's a decent riddle. Still, can you really 'see' a hole in the absence of the thing the hole is in?

Anyway, here is a reasonably complicated one.

A man comes upon 3 boys playing and notices that all three of them have dirt smudges on their forehead. He tells the lads that at least one of you has a dirt smudge on your forehead. Without feeling, if you can tell me if you do or don't and be correct and explain how you knew, I'll give you a quarter. The three boys stare at each other for a while thinking hard. After another slight pause one boy raises his hand and declares that he had a smudge. The man was dumbfounded, but had to relinquish the quarter after hearing the boys reasoning. What did the boy say? (BTW there is not a reflection to be found in this joke-- no mirrors, sunglasses, etc... this is a logic riddle)

A classic, though I originally heard it as aides to a king without an heir. Whoever was right got to become king, but wrong meant death...

So, the solution is:
Boy 1 can see smudge on both boy 2 and 3. Puts himself into boy 2's position. If 1 didn't have a smudge, then 2 would only see 3's smudge. Since 3 didn't immediately declare that he had the only smudge (since 1 and 2 would both be clean), then 2 would know he had a smudge. However, 2 did not declare that, so 1 knows that he also has a smudge.

Next:
Suppose you're taking a multiple-choice quiz. One question has three choices. Not knowing the answer, you randomly guess A. The instructor then announces that C is incorrect. Should you switch to B before turning in your paper?
